The show became trash when the throw away gags and humor and references weren't grounded in genuine drama and storytelling. After so many years with these characters they simply ran out of avenues to explore about the family and that's when they should've killed the program.

I think that actual answer that is cited among simpsons fans (at least at the AV Club) is the episode where Skinner is actually Armen Tamzarian.

I think the episode with Grimey is also on that list but I think it's funny

Homer's Enemy (the Frank Grimes episode) is one of my all time favorites. I think it put a lot of people off because the humor is so dark.

I've been watching through it and I can tell you definitively it's a good/decent show up until season 9, when you see a few ruptures in the quality, but still mostly good, then in season 10 it is just full on poo poo and never gets good for a solid 20 minutes ever again. That's how it is and anyone who says different doesn't have any taste. Simpsons is hosed in season 10 and that's it.

It's still good again after both those episodes, and both those episodes are funny, that's just precious nerds getting annoyed about those eps loving with the equilibrium of the show which is pathetic.

The AV Club is one of the worst websites we've ever had, don't refer to them or anyone else including me for correct opinions they don't exist.

Season 8 is at least as good as 7 and 6, 1-2 aren't funny at all and are really hokey, 3-9 are the years when it is a funny show and it gets progressively funnier until 9 when it kind of fucks itself, becomes annoying, and then in season 10 all the writers change and it is only funny once in every 15 jokes from then on at best, and at worst is possibly the worst tv show i've ever seen including two and a half men, family guy and all those other lovely shows

yah it's still good but that's what nerds cite as the beginning of the end of the "golden era"

and AV club is indeed turrble but it was okay in the halcyon Bush days. i visited it recently and they gave an episode of The Brink a D and an episode of Stephen Universe an A which made me lol and close the tab

I think when The Simpsons tried to be other successful shows (at the time). Only The Simpsons couldn't out-family-guy Family Guy and trying to do current event jokes like South Park doesn't really work when an episode takes half a year to create.

Though I'm still not sure if they stuck to their roots and had a really solid writing team they would have continued to be funny. How many funny stories can you really make about the same family in the same town that doesn't age or change significantly.

I saw a new episode of the Simpsons today. The guys drinking in Moe's were like, "We need our food express so that it's compatible with our busy lives!" and then they each took a drink and stared vacantly into space. It was funny.

probably around 1999, so season nine or ten or whatever it was thereabouts? shift in tone happened, plots started to become disjointed, nonsensical, overly gag-heavy, and reliant on TOO drat MANY GUEST STARS, and it also faced some serious competition:

consider that in 1999:

1. futurama was gettings its wings, even while being jerked around with scheduling, and showing a lot of promise.
2. family guy was muscling in and outdoing the simpsons (partly by, in retrospect, emulating the early simpsons dynamic of unabashed familial dysfunction)
3. south park's star was flaming high and burning bright on cable (even if not all cable systems carried comedy central back then, lol)
4. even king of the hill, while not so much ha-ha funny, was still in its good early years and worth a watch.

so yeah, simpsons crew should have given some serious thought as to how they were going to approach the series from that point on. maybe more grounded plots, maybe developing some of the earlier characters, or whatever. Instead they doubled down on hacky and wacky and let it decline. c'est la vie and gently caress 'em.

I know of course the earlier seasons had celebrities but they were still written in really well but I guess around that Mike Scully time they decided to just get whoever and write some lovely throwaway gags for them or let someone like Ricky Gervais write a loving episode about himself, ugh
uuuuuuugh
ugh

that Tony Hawk one sticks out as the first time I was like "nah gently caress you" so I blame Tony Hawk and any oval office that owns a skateboard. get a loving car

5. Most of the original crew was changing hands, leaving no truly "fresh" talent as a decade of exposure had left its mark on up-and-comers.
6. Phil Hartman loving died. :smith:
7. The few crew that did stay were burnt the gently caress out and mostly just doing whatever they could to meet deadlines.
8. Internet fan-wank over when the Simpsons "went to poo poo" (which was going on as far back as like 93 and the UseNet logs still exist to prove it) was becoming grating on the creators so they embraced the suck knowing they couldn't win.
