Like chocolate bars and chips and McDonald's? Because I can only picture him eating gross foods like entire tubs of goat cheese chased with jars of marinated herring.

no one is 100% correct which is why we have discourse and response the guy says some interesting, actually intelligent things if you are someone down with his field of study probably the smartest thing he did was to turn himself into a commodity (Zizek as a brand name associated with the most well know contemporary philosopher, several films, tons of books and articles, an entire critical journal to his writing, countless interviews and talks on youtube, etc) which both serves as a way to sort of survive/profit from the capitalistic system as well as offering a kind of ironic critique you can take him or leave him, but I am kind of glad he is at least maybe getting some people to explore the role of philosophical thought in the 20th century beyond the confines of the academic institutions (pervert's guide to ideology and cinema)

Zizek should get you to read other philosophers if you aren't big into philosophy and if you are he offers some clever and funny perspectives

Another zizek thread. Thanks! I hope he gets enough pop culture momentum in my country that it cute down the number of people going on the teevee advocating making schools STEM-only

western philosophy is generally boring and unrewarding rumination how long have those fuckers argued about the nature of god, or epistemology, philosophy of mind, or any other thing that has a variety of equally practically valid theories? people come to these arguments already having had opinions formed, even if they don't know how to express them. their opinions are shaped by things like social context, upbringing, and personality. philosophy serves the same purpose as modern television "news": people are going to enjoy what reinforces their already held beliefs and not be convinced by anything else. they already have their camp.

ashgromnies posted:western philosophy is generally boring and unrewarding rumination i disagree reading all that poo poo as a teenager growing up and ruminating on it all and thinking for myself helped me form my worldviews. I think you're right that there are people who just want their own poo poo validated or who have formed their own opinion, but to say that all people already have a formed opinion about all those things is kind of silly imo. without western philosophy there is arguably no western liberalism in the sense that we'd all still be serfs running around with lords and knights like it's Westeros and time just doesn't change for hundreds of years.

oh my god i need this i need to give this to everyone i know for christmas conshoemerism extra stout posted:i really think what happens here is people do not like zizek because he is too popular or they think he is trying too hard to make psychology or even just historical analysis 'cool', but i think his references are not to prove he can reference things and i find them genuinely humbling, he is very often admitting he is not the first person to notice a trend or invent a concept, and is just trying to bring a big collection of ideas to a young audience in a way they will hopefully understand if he didnt engage with a wider audience no one would know him at all, and that's a problem with philosophy. what good is a philosopher if his only audience is other philosophers? like he says, it's the job of a philosopher to define the problems we are facing today, while the university system is increasingly focused on producing specialists who can solve problems formulated by a small elite whose first priority is keeping themselves wealthy and powerful. as far as critical theorists go, slavoj is one of the saner ones. zizek's main problem, besides his hardcore fans, is that he's the sort of slob who thinks wiping a hot pocket under each armpit in order to wipe away the rank before devouring it is "hygiene". every third crit theorist's page in wikipedia ends with something like "... troubled career cut short after feeding spouse into combine and committing suicide with hammer and sickle." by that metric he is doing very well, regardless of how much he looks like a hairy blobfish.
