I watched two episodes of Breaking Bad and it was the most offensively boring way in which I have ever wasted an evening.

jon joe posted:I liked posts 1 and 2 but was never very enthusiastic about it. It was thrilling but I would never compare this thread to classics such as keyboard goop or mermaid Shelly. Then again I am raising the bar too high. Let me be more realistic: This thread is not as as good as threads such as THE GREAT BIRD GAMBIT, for example. It is certainly more exciting than THE GREAT BIRD GAMBIT but it is not so well structured because it runs in circles, instead of moving forward. The original post, as good as it was, proved to be limited. Posters don't really have much to go on after two posts so they started to do variations of the same post. Variations that contradict and weaken the original post. In it voted 5

Strategic Tea posted:Don't agree with this bit at all. The show made it pretty clear that family coming first was a crock of poo poo Walt told himself because he loved his new life. Jesse was central to that life because Walt absolutely needed someone to push around to satisfy his ego. Even whastherface that he let die wasn't to protect his operation, it was so she couldn't take away his surrogate abused-son. Exactly this. If all Walt cared about was protecting his family, why did he refuse Schwarz's offer to pay for all his medical expenses? What he really cares about is making money doing something he's good at. "Protecting the family" is just the excuse Walt uses to justify his immoral actions.

Then he risks loosing his own life and the millions he was going to make for his family in order to save Jesse Pinkman! Let's not forget that Mr. White killed people before and let an innocent young woman die in order to protect his "business". No, Mr. White's ego comes first. If his family came first he would have taken the sinecure offered to him by his former partner in Season 1, which wouldn't have really been a sinecure, since he is good in his field and would have done productive work. His ego coming first is the reason he got stuck being a lovely high school teacher in the first place. He's a piece of poo poo. They even had a scene in the finale that explained all that to the viewers in case they hadn't caught on since the first season

Walt has a normal ego and it took his impending death for him to do anything in his life that could possibly lead to his own satisfaction. His failures are mainly that he's a STEM autist who doesn't know how to deal with people or how to value success outside of black and white terms.

its probably one of the best shows in recent history unquestionably, there's really no room for edgy goon taste here because for the most part tv is lovely and breaking bad is for the most part quite good

The best thing Breaking Bad, which I thought was a solidly good show that I enjoyed watching, though not as much as The Wire, ever did was introduce Better Call Saul. It's like Breaking Bad with the annoying parts cut out

sweetmercifulcrap posted:But, the point of the series is not supposed to be about wanting Walt to "win" though a lot of viewers feel this way. Walt did win, though. His family gets 90 million, and he gets to play crime kingpin until he goes down on his own terms right before cancer cancer would have claimed him. It's an uplifting tale of entrepreneurial spirit and having the courage to chase your dreams.

Yeah, but he also lost his family, his son's respect, most of his earnings, his empire, and got Hank killed which he never wanted to happen. He wanted to become the next Gus Fring, instead he scrambled together what he could out of it.
