I was browsing some Youtube and saw some anime things, and suddenly I remembered one of the characters. You must understand, here in Austria we did not get a lot of anime in public television. Mostly just DBZ and some other stuff. And if you were not into that stuff big time, well, you probably missed it anyway. That and my parents were prolly not so happy with me watching this.

But the first anime I ever watched was Detective Conan! Which I found a bit odd, since it was almost broadcasted at prime time in our children TV channel, and I never really understood why. To be fair back then I wasn't into anime at all.
Tell me about the very first anime you ever watched. Doesn't need to be active, just your first memory with it.

Pokemon when I was a little kid, but it didn't really lead me to any other anime. Same with catching about half of Spirited Away one time. Much later somebody linked an illicit stream of Azumanga Daioh in an IRC room I was using, for reasons that I can no longer recall, and I watched that, and then started reading ADTRW.

Mine's also in the 80's; i don't remember which was first exactly but the Warriors of the Wind movie (the heavily edited and changed ghibli movie Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind) and Robotech. Mainly Robotech really, i lived just close enough to school that i could be home in time to catch it, most of my friends lived just far enough away that they'd miss at least half of it so i was the only one who really got hooked on it. People died! poo poo blew up! There was romance! It was, in short, way more like Star Wars than any of the other crappy cartoons on tv.

I didn't really know it was Japanese, and definitely didn't know how it combined 3 unrelated shows or any of that stuff. I just knew it was fuckin rad.

The first anime that i knew was from Japan and was when Akira got its first US vhs release and some of my filmnerd friends and i watched it and were blown away.

i watheced all the standard toonami and adult swim staples that aired from like 1998-2003 or w/e then in 2003 my mom brought me home the first issue of us jump that they had at the waiting room at her work for some reason. i read manga a lot when i was younger because anime dvds were like prohibitively expensive by comparison. jump eventually got me into bleach and naruto and fansubs in like 2004/2005.

also i saw a triple feature of akira/grave of the fireflies/royal space force: THE WINGS OF HONNEAMISE in 2004 too and that was life changing. well... cya

My brother and I were channel surfing at a family friend's house and we came across a cartoon where a big muscley guy was being crushed in the hand of a giant ape that wore huge pointy shoulderpads, and the big muscley guy was actually bleeding and really beat up. It was DBZ (of course), and it blew our tiny minds. I couldn't have been older than ten. My brother would later buy pirated VHSes with subtitles so we could finish the drat Frieza cycle, and we made it up to the Cell Tournament. Good times.

Shortly after we discovered DBZ, my brother rented a movie called Warriors of the Wind. I loved stories featuring women warriors, but this was before Mulan came out, much less movies like the Hunger Games. I hadn't discovered Tamora Pierce yet, either. So to get a movie featuring the courageous and compassionate Princess Zandra, facing off the incredibly competant if misguided Princess Kushana, was incredible. I loved that movie so much. These days I know I should look down on Warriors of the Wind as a butchered version of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, but I can't bring myself to dislike a movie that meant so much to me as a little girl. My brother actually bought the manga as it was translated into English, so I got the real thing anyway (it's still one of my favorites today). I did eventually see the uncut Nausicaa movie, but that was more than a decade after I watched Warriors of the Wind. It was a little strange (if delightful) to see all the scenes that had been cut from my beloved childhood movie.

Oh yeah, and my brother brought home AKIRA when I was ten. I made it to the doll scene before bolting. Still read each volume of the manga whenever he bought the new one, though. I kind of thought of his collections of AKIRA and Nausicaa as a shared collection and bought the final volumes for each with my Bat Mitzvah money. I still have the fourth volume of Nausicaa on my shelf (he took all the other volumes with him when he went to college, the jerk).

pokemon when I was a kid but until I was in like high school I didn't know that japan had anything to do with anything. of all things the show that I was most into on toonami was hamtaro, but dragonball z was nice too, until my parents were like 'oh no too violent you may not watch this' for a while

my first actual anime where i was like 'i am going to watch an anime' was tengen toppa gurren lagann because even in like 2011 the internet was still nuts about it, followed by stuff like gundam seed, code geass, then starting watching things by season with rinne no lagrange

Hard to say, because some of my earliest memories are of toonami and Dragon Ball (GODDAMMIT WHAT DO YOU MEAN WE'RE GOING BACK TO RADITZ GOKU JUST GOT TO NAMEK!). Probably one of DBZ/Pokemon/Sailor Moon, not sure which.

First one I saw that wasn't one of those kids morning show ones was when I was 10 or 11 and End of Evangelion was on at like midnight, and my brother and I recorded it and watched it and had no idea what was happening, so then he read a plot synopsis of the series and we watched it again and still had no idea what was happening.

Actually come to think of it my friend and I also rented out Boogiepop Phantom when we were eight because we thought the name was funny. I think we watched one episode before we got bored and did something else.

i watched a bunch of generic saturday morning cartoons in the early 2000s that were varying levels of anime-y, in addition to pokemon. i remember that one french CGI show code lyoko, yugioh, avatar, teen titans, the transformers series running at the time which was made in japan, stuff like that. i was never really big into naruto or DBZ, partly because i was young enough that those shows seemed scary and violent. i mostly stopped watching cartoons by like 8th grade though, and after that i got indirect exposure to anime through knowing about / coming into contact with 4chan and the internet.

and then, years later, i watched kill la kill because i thought some guy's FYAD avatar was funny and why the hell not, and i discovered to my deep shock that anime is actually good
