Shucks folks, I'm speechless. Hawf Hawf Hawf!
My composer friend David and I finally managed to continue our Let's Play of Super Metroid - this time learning from our past mistakes and learning how to pre-record and to edit all the garbage out before shoving it onto Youtube. Turned an hour play session into a much more easily digestable and less death-filled 21 minutes. Aiming to beat at least one boss per video, with this one tackling the weird flower-pod-looking boss! If anyone would like, let us know how we're doing. Trying to get better at this each video we do!

Between DS3's recent release, and the player base being spread over six different ports, there aren't many people around in any particular version. Just today I decided to do some online play with Punchwitch*, and didn't see any PvP hits.

Like, at all, or just Ratbroing? And that's a good point, if you want to play "Dark Souls 2" there's 6 versions and none of them are compatible. I keep forgetting there was a "Scholar of the First Sin" available for PS3/360 that doesn't actually have any of the story content. LIke, y'know, the Scholar. :sweatdrop:

Interesting idea, just circling Freja. I find it's worth it to just block her bite (it'll auto-guard crush you, like Rat Authority; but she's too slow to do anything about it) and keep the hits up with a fast weapon. If you're already using a greatweapon, though, then it makes sense to go for bigger hits. Also, you're missing out on a lot of damage by not using weapon buffs, since they scale with AR in DS2.

Hey, co-commenting is co-LPing to me!

You two have some pretty good banter, but it's like... too casual for a serious LP (with the belching and backseating) but too focused for a casual one (since she already knows the game and is skipping some stuff). That's my impression, anyway. Audio sounds great, what kind of setup do you have? I've seen you post in the Tech Fort so I know there's some effort there, heh.

First off: I had no idea you could straight up just turn around and walk back to Alan's car (and thus examine the island), that's really cool! Alan Wake is a fantastic game, and I like your LP stuff so for me that's a winning combo :sax:

Aww, thanks! :glomp: Definitely glad Ben is playing this one; not only does he get into games more, but he's more willing to try stuff out like that.

Alan Wake - Episode 1: Nightmare Part 2
After doing some more exploring in the woods, we run into Stucky again, then it's back to the "real world." But the fact he's missing (and presumably dead) definitely makes the player start to think there is no "nightmare world" at all. It makes me think about this idea in the meta sense: games like Silent Hill and Persona and more have gotten players used to the idea that "the action happens in a parallel world" and in some sense doesn't count, but here it does; and the jarring skips ahead and back in the narrative and how weird the "Darkness" is is to keep you guessing.

Thanks!

My audio setup is an MXL990 which is on a boom-style mic stand so it's about 2 feet in front of both of us while we sit on the couch. I have a little pop screen on it, but that's more for my solo stuff where it's <1 foot from my face.

Then I run all the (commentary) audio through audacity and do a low-level noise reduction and pretty significant amount of compression. I don't do any autoducking of gamesound with this video, so I just normalize the commentary to -9db and the game audio to like, -20db. I gate out any sound from the commentary below ~50db, which takes care of any background noise between speaking.

The MXL990 is basically my secret to great audio. You can get one on amazon for $90-100, so it's a little pricier than a snowball, and because I haven't tried a snowball, I can't say if it's any better. It needs phantom power, and I'm using a eurorack UB502 mixer that I already had to take the xlr cable and turn it into a 1/4 audio jack, which I then use a Rocksmith Realtone cable to turn the whole thing into a USB mic as far as my computer is concerned. If I didn't already have the mixer and the Realtone cable, I would have bought a xlr to usb adapter, which exists, but I can't vouch for how well they work. It's nice to have the mixer cause it gives me a hardware gain nob.

I'm recording with an AVermedia Portable, so I have to use their AVerMedia RECentral software, which doesn't have a lot of options. In order to record commentary separate from the video and game audio, it can only be recorded in mp3 format, which is not great. But I'm happy with my end results, and that's what counts.

In the interest of just completing the description of my setup, the AVermMedia records game audio over HDMI, but also has a seperate stereo audio out jack, so I have that going to a mini 4 way stereo headphone amp, that means I can have 4 different sets of headphones plugged in listening to game audio, each with their own volume nob.

I really wanted to mix the mic audio back into that headphone hub, so we would could hear ourselves (and each other better), but since I'm using my only mixer as a xlr->usb adapter, I can't do that without dropping another >$60 bucks on another mixer.

At all, really. Like I said, I was offline in the Ratbro areas to farm for Awestones, but in the other early areas I hadn't seen a PvP hit beyond someone with an obvious twink build in Forest of Fallen Giants. As for the PS3/360 "Scholar" versions, those don't technically have the additional story content on disk but from all accounts will easily allow it via auto-patching and/or a pre-enabled DLC code. (Unless you're, y'know, deliberately avoiding the auto-patching process for investigative reasons. :v:)

My circling strategy in fact came about because of the fact that Freya's bite would break my guard. I figured that the safest response, then, was instead to just avoid any potential follow-up attempts rather than wait for my stamina to replenish. I often forget to do weapon buffs on NG+, since generally they don't last for the duration of an encounter with a boosted-health boss and thus require effort to reestablish, but I'll try to show those off in the future. (In some cases I may have to pull out Sacred Oath, but that's still pretty good.)

So, Thorn, are you ever going to discover that you can save an entire click per pokeball throw if you just use the 'last item used' button in the item menu?

Also, you really seemed confused about the Exp. Share item the chat was talking about, which you'll be getting later in the game and allows you to divide experience more easily among the team without switching pokemon all the time. In any case, I think it doesn't matter if you're using the Exp. Share or not, the total amount of experience a defeated pokemon gives is set and doesn't increase if you use more pokemon. It's just divided up among all pokemon that were in the battle. You get more experience from trainer battles than from wild pokemon, and from pokemon that are at a way higher level than yours. There are a few ways to boost the exp beyond the normal value, for instance by using traded pokemon (but those following your commands if you're overleveled), equipping a rare item called the Lucky Egg, or increasing the pokemon's affection with the Amie.

That's also a good thing to know: other than base stats, the Amie increases affection, not happiness. So it's not possible to trigger happiness evolutions with the Amie. The only affection-based evolution is Sylveon's. By the way, you're probably getting really over-levelled and killing a lot of the challenge by grinding that much. Pokemon games are easy enough if you just defeat all the trainers you encounter.

In any case... I hadn't seen much of this generation yet. It looks quite neat so far, I like all the 3D stuff.

Gotcha, thanks. Very impressive! Definitely taking notes for when I have more money to work with, heh. Right now my brother and I are using a USB condenser (ATR2500) in our living room and that's about it. I did have an old copy of Audition on hand and its live sound settings definitely help; we started using the multiband compressor settings to gain down most of the mic's self-noise and amplify the rest and it's been helping immensely quality-wise. But there's only so much you can do software-wise with limited tools.

NGDBSS posted:

Well, that explains where your avatar is from. Man, and Solaire thought he was grossly incandescent! :sweatdrop: At least if you were going to have recording problems, it was in a zone that's basically the same between the two games.

---

OK, start of the second stream (and thus the second episode) of Alan Wake!

Alan Wake - Episode 2: Taken Part 1/3
It's kind of fitting the episode is called "Taken," because Alan immediately heads out to gun down a bunch of people to rescue his family. :v: But seriously it's a pretty good part of the game. Building on what we were thinking last time ("shadow world" versus possessed people in the real world), the game confirms it with Rusty. The "gradual reveal" building up to it hitting a friendly side character is stock horror but it works.
The audio was desynced slightly in the original version, so all 3 episodes have about a second cut off the end when I shifted the audio track to fix it. I guess AVIDemux clips a video to the end of the video track, even if there's still lingering audio. Shouldn't happen again.

Yeah, it's super weird, because the signal should be all digital by that point. But it's possible that the hub itself was generating some kind of interference that was getting picked up earlier in the hardware. I didn't really mess with it once I figured out what worked.

P2 Side (Hard)

This is the side that I usually play on, and it also has its advantages beyond the game itself. People seem more eager to join in when they see that the P1 side is vacant, and it just makes for a more enjoyable experience than going solo.

Anyways, here's the diagram for playing this game in Link Mode, which is the closest thing to replicating the 2-player arcade experience at home without it costing you more than $2000 for an actual arcade machine:

Game Manual posted:

The only caveat to this setup is that it requires a specific "fat" PS2 - it has to have an iLink port (S400) that's located near the USB ports on the front side. This made Time Crisis 3 one of the few PlayStation 2 games that utilized this feature along with Gran Turismo 3/4, Armored Core 2/3 (and their expansions), and TimeSplitters 2, to name a few examples.

Speaking of setups, I really would have liked to do this LP with an actual light gun, but the GunCon2/G-Con2 doesn't work on an LCD TV. There is an HDTV-compatible light gun available for purchase, but shelling out $100 for such a short LP is kinda silly if you ask me. Maybe someone else who has more expendable cash is more dedicated could do a "proper" LP with that setup? That would be cool to see. :allears:

It's been a while, so to recap a bit, I've been doing a low effort LP of a really low effort game in order to get my audio sorted. It's been a month so here's the previous updates:

Let's Play Legendary 01: Everybody Jump!
Let's Play Legendary 02: The World's Flattest Werewolf
Let's Play Legendary 03: Strategic Invinciblity
Let's Play Legendary 04: Hedgehog Generator
Let's Play Legendary 05: Miniwhales And Rainbow Wolves

And here's the new one:
Let's Play Legendary 06: Ye Olde Englyshe Sewage

As usual, any feedback pertaining to the technical stuff/quality of video, audio, commentary is appreciated. I think it sounds a bit quieter than it should but I really can't tell with my voice and admittedly bad enunciation.

Alan Wake - Episode 2: Taken Part 2/3
But seriously, I think the "reverse escort mission" with the Kidnapper is a definite "your mileage may vary" moment. I thought it was pretty cool to have the game establish that not only are other people explicitly aware of the Darkness some of them are capable of fighting it, while in a lot of stories everyone except the protaganist are "muggles" who can't really do anything about supernatural forces. On the other hand... you get a major moment of disempowerment and the AI isn't good enough to avoid deaths that aren't really "your fault" when he simply fails to shoot enemies and whatnot.

I've been streaming Dark Souls 3 and Dragon's Dogma currently, so I was thinking about posting those here too. Unlike SotN and Alan Wake, they'd be edited for deaths and backtracking and stuff like that. I'd probably be posting them together to avoid clutter, too... y'know, "Dark Double Feature" (since Dogma's Steam version is the "Dark Arisen" expansion). Any thoughts? 3 "LPs" at the same time could be a bit much, but those are both fairly popular games, and in the latter case nobody's put up any Dragon's Dogma content on LP since the PC version came out.

I dunno, just feels like :justpost: is kinda running asymptotically toward :bandwagon: or something. :v:
