The Mikasa is a proud battleship that shall humble the Russian bear, goddamnit. It is no mere 'armored cruiser'.

Isn't this the time when for the most part you just avoided decisive battles because no-one could really force the other to an engagement unless both decided to take it?

Something will happen and Britain will declare war on us, moments ahead of France. And then our ships will all explode in the harbor.

So, what brought about the transition from B to BB, exactly? What had previously been stopping people from equipping large ships with a uniform caliber main battery and were there other major innovations involved in making a Dreadnought?

PBJ posted:It's not the correct ship until they raise Yamato from her watery grave. Why would anyone be proud of the Yamato, it was a completely worthless boat that mostly achieved running away from some escort carriers and destroyers, and then being murdered by planes. Like, it was a giant waste of money, resources, and lives that accomplished pretty much nothing. Which I suppose is a pretty apt metaphor for Japan's mid-century imperial ambitions, at least.
