There's only one answer here, and it is Link to the Past. Not only is it the high point of the series, it also is the only game that will give you a sense of both the early top down 2d Zeldas (I, II, Link's Awakening) and the more modern 3d entries in the series. Whether you enjoy the older or newer games after that is a matter of taste, but Link to the Past does a great job of capturing the series as a whole.

A link to the past is the snes one right? Everyone seems to love it for reasons beyond me. Don't get me wrong it has its merits but zelda dx is basically the same style but a step up. Link to the past was pretty much impossible to beat without guides cause it had that old school obscure fetch quest style bullshit in certain parts.

When the gba port came out i made an honest attempt to play it without using a guide (something pretty easy to do for every zelda game after links awakening) but ended up caving 2/3rds into the game after getting tired of wandering around aimlessly looking for the obscure thing with no in game directions to that was needed to progress to the next area.

I don't like Link to the Past that much. Original Zelda is good. Gameboy Zelda is good.

Link to the Past is the standard to which the rest of the series is typically set against, so it's probably the best place to start. Ocarina and Wind Waker own though, and the back half of Twilight is really good once you get past the mind-sodomizingly boring tutorials.

The only good Zelda Games are the non-3d ones (Oracle of Season/Ages, Minish Cap, Link's Awakening, and A Link To the Past.) :circlefap:

I think a link to the past hype is mostly a mixture of nostalgia plus an internet echo chamber thing, i went back and played through a lot of zelda games when i was bored one year and link to the past was one of the more obtuse and frustrating ones, if you wanna play an old school 2d zelda play links awakening or the zelda dx port of it.

One not mentioned in this thread that was pretty fun was minnish cap. Was one of the last 2d style zeldas before the handhelds switched to 3d too.

People only think LttP is hard because they've had zelda games drag them by the hand from plot point to plot point for the last 17 years. Play LttP if you can wrap your head around concepts like "exploring places without some rear end in a top hat telling you to go there".

i did get stuck once in lttp. there's this bomb shop and all they sell is bombs, i was like this place is useless i can get bombs lots of places. then later they also start selling a super bomb that you need and it didn't occur to me to go back there and check whether they had started selling other stuff they didn't sell before

i didn't play lttp as a kid and it's bad because you can't slash your sword in a diagonal direction. too bad if an enemy is 1 pixel out of your swords range, you're gonna get hosed up.

links awakening, the oracle games, windwaker and the n64 ones are the best
