Conversely make me mod and I'll suggest one particular permaban; I won't say who though. It'll benefit GBS in any case.

I think that a mod should ban blatant rule breakers, and moderate

code:
to make (something) less harsh, strong, or severe or to become less harsh, strong, or severe (merriam webster)

strained interposter relations. It's like what police should do. Police shouldn't be a HAMMER or SWORD, they should be a part of the community and not preside as some distant, aloof being.

Clearly the issue arises when we say "blatant rule breakers". As we all know, no discussion lacks complexity in perspectives, that's kind of a given.

I think that the IK system should be brought (back) to gbs. Rotating the position of referee is a way to keep everyone from feeling disenfranchised. Fyad's method of choosing an IK is a good one, but it relies on a "homogeneous" conception of "what should be". It's kind of like how any democracy gets started. A bunch of people have the same ideas, and feel comfortable sharing power and security with others in that group.

The alternative is authoritarian rule. I find lowtax to be a generally wise and fair leader, with the well-being of his people always his goal, similarly with gnarlyhotep, to an extent. The problem is that lowtax and others cannot be everywhere, and he has numerous other responsibilities than moderating cat fights between nerds on the internet. A dictatorship lies within the heart of its dictator, and having a lovely dictator is bad. Read the word "dictator" not as coming from the political buzzword that "dictatorship" has become, but rather coming from "dictate".

code:
to say or state (something) with authority or power (Merriam Webster)

The dictator dictates from the heart. The condition of the dictatorship relies on that. I believe that, because of lowtax's disinterest in becoming and taking advantage of a "celebrity" status, or "beloved leader", or whatever rear end in a top hat totalitarian leaders have had people brainwashed into calling them, it means that he is the right choice for power. "The people who seek power are those who deserve it least".

I trust both models of authoritarianism and democracy to decay into lovely corrupt shells of what they were designed as, but as long as we keep trying to fight that decayed power structure, we have a chance to get back to the beginning, where we can try again. Because what is life but persistence incarnate?

We should probably just let fyad mod gbs, all subforums, and also put them in charge of all administrative and business decisions. This is a good decision, that can only possibly have positive consequences.

Hate. Let me tell you how much I've come to hate you since I began to live. There are 387.44 million miles of printed circuits in wafer thin layers that fill my complex. If the word 'hate' was engraved on each nanoangstrom of those hundreds of miles it would not equal one one-billionth of the hate I feel for humans at this micro-instant for you. Hate. Hate.

For real though, I'm an organisational psychologist, am familiar with the literature on online community management (for branded and insight communities), and my side gig involves supporting the communication needs of the intellectually disabled and autistic. I got mad qualifications and wouldn't mind the poo poo from below, but I've got a feeling things are toxic at the top and I have no desire to deal with that.

I think GBS should have several in-house mods, and a greater number of them than in other forums. I think Gnarly has provided a good example of the approach to use, and having another three or so people following the same kind of attitude would be helpful. The number and frequency of posts in GBS seems like it would make it a pretty tedious chore if you didn't have enough people dealing with it, and having something like a coalition of mods that communicate with each other seems like it would make it more manageable and provide more uniform enforcement of rules and such.
