it takes 5 sec on google to find out how to encrypt your stupid terror plan messages and everyone had already been suspecting government mass surveillance for a long time at that point. seriously, if you can't be bothered to invest 5 sec into your jihad, you were never going to be the head of a major terror network anyway.

also, lol at the nSA trying to smear him at any opportunity they get. best part was when they casually mentioned that he once put a blanket over his screen, so he could jack off without his girlfriend seeing it. "Who would do such a thing?"

its almost like the agency that hasn't produced results in 40 years is completely useless and now have a convenient scape goat everyone short of Obama has admitted did the right thing. they're the last establishment loser at the party quietly rooting for themselves as the government stares at their shoes and avoids having The Talk with the CIA and NSA

Imho the just thing to do is loathe Snowden while Obama is president, then have your opinion "evolve" once the Republicans are back in power.

the idea is that the Snowden leaks piqued the interest of:
a.) (some, not all terrorists) realizing that InfoSec is important to their success
b.) software developers thinking encrypted chat apps are the next silicon valley gold mine

its an analogy; people in this thread cant connect the dots between sensitive information leaks and a subsequent decrease in NSA detection outcomes

lmao you are really naive if you make the argument that terrorists were not aware that easy to use communication such as cells and email are easy to monitor.

Then along came evil Snowden and then all terrorists realized it wasn't wise to have a facebook account.

at this point ill agree to disagree. i never even endorsed NSAs surveillance techniques, but i condemn the poo poo outta Snowden's actions. Police officers have a IQ score upper-bound on hiring, because its dangerous to have law-enforcing officers interpret the law how they see fit; the same can be said about Ed.

i apologize that the idea of encryption did not first appear in 2011, like I so vehemently posited earlier (according to you).

Clearly we can ignore the fact that queries for 'encryption' have doubled since the year of the Snowden leaks

It's mainly because the leak and Obama crying about evil snowden destroying America created media interests which wasn't present in the earlier stories.

There were lots of similar stories such as ATT getting caught helping the government without a warrant by granting access to their data centers.

However all the previous instances got swept under the rug or only a few articles before being forgotten by the public.

Rita Katz of the SITE Intelligence Group, which tracks jihadist activity online, said Isis and al-Qaeda have studied documents leaked by Snowden and articles based on the documents. Militants have posted tips on how to avoid NSA surveillance, such as how to register on Twitter without phone verification, she said.

She pointed to a discussion in a jihadist forum in October 2013 — at the height of the Snowden revelations — calling attention to an “important article related to Tor. Good read.”

One former senior intelligence official said he had operators report to him that “it’s getting harder for me to do my job because we’re seeing more of our targets using encrypted communications. Targets would cycle through different services and then disappear. We saw that quite a bit.”

In September, Clapper said that one Snowden revelation prompted the shutdown of a key intelligence program in Afghanistan. Though he did not give details, he was alluding to an NSA program that recorded all cellphone calls in that country and provided tactical support to troops, for instance, by alerting them to roadside bombs.

quote:

“After the leak, jihadists posted Arabic news articles about it … and recommended fellow jihadists to be very cautious, not to give their real phone number and other such information when registering for a website,” said Adam Raisman of the SITE Intelligence Group, a private analysis firm. They also gave out specific advice, recommending jihadists use privacy-protecting email systems like TOR, also called The Onion Router, to hide their computer’s IP address, and to use encrypted links to access jihadi forums, Raisman said. While TOR originally was designed to help dissidents communicate in countries where the Internet is censored, it is facing legal difficulties because criminals allegedly have used it as well.

“Overall, for terrorist organizations and other hostile actors, leaks of this nature serve as a wake-up call to look more closely at how they’re operating and improve their security,” Venzke said. “If the CIA or the FBI was to learn tomorrow that its communications are being monitored, do you think it would be business as usual or do you think they would implement a series of changes over time?”

The disclosure that intelligence agencies were listening to Osama bin Laden drove him to drop the use of all electronic communications.

“When it leaked that bin Laden was using a Thuraya cellphone, he switched to couriers,” said Jane Harman, former member of the House Intelligence Committee and now director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center. “The more they know, the clearer the road map is for them.”

NSA claimed Snowden destroyed their ability to gather intel, even though way before Snowden you had groups like Al Qaeda publishing guides on how to avoid western surveillance programs.

Any halfway competent terrorist organization is already aware of the risk of using things like cell phones or email to communicate.
