I thought the pilot was great. Much better than I was expecting.

I'm genuinely curious what you mean by this. Other than "it has spaceships in space", I couldn't think of one example.

I'm loving the series so far.

But did Naomi seriously throw a thin sheet of plastic to try and stop an explosive decompression? I can't be the only one who saw that.........

edit: just finished the 4th episode and this is a seriously rad show. Faithful to the books but it's going for its own style which I like. That Holden interrogation scene was cool as poo poo.

I like how they've portrayed Mars so far. In the books they obviously had a lot more time to flesh them out but I thought the show has done a pretty good job getting the point across so far in the limited time they've had. I'm really looking forward to seeing some Earth Ships too.

In the books the Martian navy is much smaller but they're technically superior to the Earth who has numbers but generally very dated technology. I know it's probably a couple seasons away but the giant space battle the two navy's have over Ganymede in Caliban's War is going to be loving awesome. This show better not get cancelled. There's so much material left.

I'm really loving their portrayal of Ceres station and Miller's storyline too. They're getting the gritty, slum like feel down perfect.

edit: The guy who plays Alex is a pretty bad actor but the show is good enough I can forgive that.

I can't wait for the flashback episodes delving into the characters dark pasts alluded to by the Martian interrogator. Or the Solomen Epsteins story.

Considering we don't really learn about any of their back stories until book 5 you might be waiting awhile.

The Epstein story is pretty cool though. Some backyard scientist invents the first fusion rocket engine and blasts off to the stars never to be seen again.

I didn't get the impression that they had a ton of marines on board anyways. There was the squad that took Holden and crew out, a couple on the bridge and a couple guarding them in the cells. You can also hear some fighting in the distance during their escape. That's maybe a platoon total and that seems totally reasonable to have on the flagship of your navy.

As for why didn't they deploy the Roci or anything else during the attack. The Mars Captain was clearly pretty confident that her ship could take out 1 incoming "belter" ship. By the time it split into multiple ships and starting firing rail guns at them it was probably way too late to deploy much of anything.

I'm pretty sure that they knew it was multiple ships when the "ship" they were tracking executed turnover, which was before they ever entered missile range let alone CQB. I'm also reasonably sure that they had more than a platoon since the Tachi can carry a platoon by itself, the fact of the matter is that the Donnager is the size of a skyscraper and we kind of deliberately don't have a good look at the boarding action (other than that it seemingly did not go in the martian's favor).

Sure, and for patrol craft that makes sense. But for a battleship? I mean presumably if you are going to kick over someone else's sandcastle you could bring some kind of dedicated assault craft that was built to insert boarders into a hostile environment. But if you are being boarded you've already lost. The only reason a military adversary would board you instead of destroying you outright is if the battle was already decided, in which case you may as well use the self destruct because no matter how hard you fight deck by deck if will not change the possible outcomes.

Sure, they saw the belter ship split into a few different ships but that's still just "a few belter ships". You can even see the 2 gunners or whatever making smug remarks on the bridge. No one was worried at all. Then they start to discover that they're not actually belter ships and the lovely belter missiles they're shooting at them are actually using guidance systems that are more advanced than their own. They still have the rail guns so "let's finish this and go home!" Oh poo poo, they have rail guns too and within minutes of that they're in CQB.

It was a progression that was planned perfectly by the unknown ships to take advantage of Martian arrogance. By the time they realize they're in trouble they were seconds away from being boarded.

I agree that the term "battleship" probably doesn't really mean the same thing in The Expanse universe as it does for us. The fact that they have a ship like the Roci on board is a pretty good indication that their engaging in patrol and inspection like activities. The Captain even talks about it at one point how she's been on patrols to keep the belters in line. If there's any chance you're going to have to send a boarding party to a belter ship you're going to want highly trained marines on board. If you look at Navy ships today it's actually the smaller patrol or escort type ones that have a duel role crew for boarding actions, since they might not have the space for marines. Larger Navy ships will most likely have marines on board.

What's the risk? The Donnager is the most capable ship in the system.

Not to mention that Phoebe station was one of their research stations and was probably dealing with some pretty classified poo poo. They were on their way back from there when the whole Cant blowing up situation went down. The stealth ships probably waited until the Donnager was in the vicinity to blow up the Cant so they'd be the ones to respond. Their whole reason for attacking the Donnager was to start up a war to keep their Eros plans from being noticed after all.

Eh. It will be mindless and mostly fun. Just like Star Trek always has been.

Everything since the reboot has been mindless. However, although there has definitely been some bad movies, bad episodes and even bad series over the years, the best Star Trek has been anything but mindless. TNG and DS9 dealt with some pretty serious moral and ethical issues in many of it's story arcs, especially for the time they were made. Cloning, genetic engineering, gender identity, racism, PTSD, personhood and genocide just to name a few.

The new Star Trek reboot was a mildly entertaining action movie with a Trek skin. The second one wasn't even good at that and from the look of the trailer the third one is going to be even worse.

I've been doing a BSG rewatch since The Expanse ended and I'm just about done the second season. I'd be hard pressed to pick which series I like better. BSG started stronger with the miniseries and the first couple episodes of season 1, but the mid season had some weak spots. Hopefully, The Expanse pulls off a good second season.

They have magic space drugs that can deal with that though. I mean if they have ones that can bulk up a Belter enough to live on a planet they can surely keep an Earther in shape.

Yeah, in one of the first episodes they talk about the cheap bone density drugs the belters get. The one belter shows Havelock that Miller has spurs on the back of his neck from them.

Why don't the space people just spin their poo poo a bit faster?

In the books they say that spinning Ceres up to 0.3g was one of the greatest engineering accomplishments of the Tycho corporation, so maybe it was too hard? Could also have to do with the coriolis effect. It's already noticeable on Ceres (the scene with Miller pouring his drink) at 0.3g. Maybe spinning Ceres enough to give a full g would make it too high for comfort.
