hi how are you

I don't understand why this is such a pervasive opinion, ironic or otherwise.

For example, GTA San Andreas, while being badly written by film/TV standards, is better written, acted and directed than many, many films and TV shows.

Anyone who insists that one artistic medium is less capable of containing good writing because it's interactive isn't only pedantic and shortsighted, it literally makes no sense.

Can anyone supply an argument besides the goon standard chestnut "they are for children?" because they aren't.

Side opinion, despite having no dialogue or words I think Shadow of the Collosus is well written/storyboarded because it hits hard in the feels multiple times with barely a sound, so the direction and story boarding work effectively as written.

I think that the writing and acting that you think is good is, in fact, bad

E: It probably has to do with the sheer amount of work required to write a 20 hour + game and the cost of hiring anyone good to do that, but also that the medium is literally for idiots and you're wasting your time doing anything good because no one will notice

Games are very good I like playing them. I don't like reading and watching them because reading books and watching movies is more good. So you see, many things are actually good.

The text-based MUD Dragonrealms by Simutronics has great writing. Each room is described interestingly and there's a lot of humor and even some sadness there. Definitely much higher quality writing than it would need to be.

"Better written than many" is not "good", and this is also flat-out incorrect. If there were a movie written of the same caliber as a Rockstar script, every review of the movie would mention it's terrible dialogue.

For the record i think that Videogames have the potential to be the single greatest artform there is for delivering a story, communicating ideas etc. It's just that for the medium's entire existence it's failed at doing so because writing (and even vision) is secondary to most everything else in the game 95% of he time.

That's the job of an Art Director. The script for the game could have literally read "you fight a monster but it's sad because the monster is scared" but the Art Director did a great job with that small prompt. It doesn't mean that the writing is good for the game.

Except the games that do make an effort to tell a good story are still terrible at it and everyone needs to stop trying.

Yeah, it's sad but when games actually do try one of two things happens (and this is regardless of quality). If they're a big budget triple A game people laud praise on them because gamers are such shitheads unused to even a modicum of effort they trip over themselves at something as base as Bioshock. OR it's an indie game in which for some reason gamers have decided that trying to be story focused in that instance is pretentious.

I feel like in order to actually be meaningful and have good writing, games kinda need to embrace everything lovely and wacky about their medium. No More Heroes is actually a super smart game with a lot on its mind, but it is also silly as gently caress and doesn't give a poo poo about delivering its points cohesively or at the cost of the game.

Undertale has some cool stuff going on as well but it's mainly just well-executed simple concepts, and the game knows that writing serious stuff isn't its strongest suit so it's content hinting at a lot of things.
