You raise a lot of good points. I don't have all the answers nor will I pretend to. The best I can offer is that a rape is often a very personal experience and the decisions as to what to do afterwards are very personal as well. Post-rape behaviors run along broad spectrums, and no one can force a rape victim into the "appropriate" action. I've done some victim-services work and one of the hardest things they try to prepare you for (and they can never adequately prepare you for it) is in incidents of domestic violence and sexual abuse is when a victim "gets out" and then ends up going back to her abuser. Some get that going to the police after the fact is a non-starter for so many reasons ( his word v. hers, no evidence, the victim-blaming, being ostracized, not being believed, money, culture/religion), but some feel compelled to do something about it as a way of healing. Imagine a psychological trauma like a very bad break-up or injury or something that would cause PTSD and how people tend to re-live it over and over and over again. Freud was surprised to discover that the soldiers coming back from WWI had a tendency to relive traumatic experiences and developed what he eventually called the Death Drives/Thanatos principle. A public display like the Columbia mattress girl might be in line with an attempt to take control over the trauma, albeit in a demonstrative way. You can control a Twitter account with a a greater degree of certitude too. "I'm here, I'm alive. It was horrific, but I got through this. It didn't destroy me, and I won't let it control my life." It is a way to divest the hold, control and power that a traumatic incident has over a a person and get on with their lives. Is there an element of attention-seeking behavior? Perhaps, maybe that's the point. The accusation, and fodder of so many of our finest dipshit comedy scientists in this thread seems to be that if the victim did not conduct themselves by adhering to what they think a rape victim should do in those circumstances, the accusation is suspect and the accuser is a liar. On the other hand, false rape accusations do sometimes exist. Last year's faulty Rollingstone article was an illustrative clusterfuck, and Emily Yoffe (I think?) over at Slate had a great article about a rape accusation at Harvard where the guy more or less got railroaded. There's no easy answer here.
