 The ozone layer helps block UV radiation which is honestly the least of your problems. What mars really needs is a nice magnetosphere to block radiation.

 There was going to be a half life 2 full conversion mod years ago, called Badge of Blood. It was going to use satellite data on Martian topography to create the maps. Unfortunately it never went anywhere beyond concept art that I can tell.
