Capsule is sometimes really good, though it varies a lot. Nakata rules when he tries to make really intense, frantic songs with lots of garbled vocals by Koshijima, but some of his albums are just 1 decent track with 11 tracks meant as background music for Japanese variety shows and stuff. I was at a swimming pool and they were playing Sugarless Girl on the announcement speakers. World of Fantasy, More More More and Wave Runner are best. Space Circus deliver serious fire on both of their albums. Kenso are basically the Japanese Camel, and they're one of Japan's best prog bands. Not all of their stuff is jazzy, though. Yume no Oka is the best I've heard from them, and also the jazziest. Trix should be an obvious choice since they have members of both Casiopea and T-Square. Good band. Pyramid have T-Square's keyboardist and they're pretty good. Some more thoughts: NOA Lu7 (on the smoother side of prog-fusion - the composer also worked on the Mega Man Zero soundtracks) Side Steps Toshiki Kadomatsu is THE guy if you want stuff on the more city pop side of J-fusion. Makoto Mastushita ain't half bad either.

There's nowhere else I can really post this, but I really hate Buck-Tick. My wife's friend loves them so much that I've seen them about five or six times live (mostly at Budokan) and I've gone mostly for the camaraderie and definitely not for the music. They sound mostly like an 80s rock band that just discovered KMFDM and occasionally throws in 50s bubblegum rock every now and again to the mix. They played a new song at their last show at the Yokohama Arena and it sounded so stale that I had to keep myself from audibly groaning. Their stage show is fine but the music is so generic it irritates me. The same goes for the side projects Schaft and the Mortal -- they just don't have any songs that are interesting to me in any way. On the other hand, I went to a Yellow Monkey show at the Saitama Super Arena and while I wasn't into them either, they were much more enjoyable to watch. I have to say though I liked Perfume's Cosmic Explorer much more than everyone else seems to have.

Are all-female or female-lead metal bands starting to become big in Japan or have they been that way for a while? I mean before Babymetal I wasn't really paying attention but now I'm seeing stuff for bands like Band-Maid, Aldious, and...well I know there was at least one more. Just curious if it's because of the success of Babymetal, or if Babymetal was a result of this already-present trend, or if they're mutually exclusive. Also does anyone by chance know who this was; I saw a video on niconico a few months ago that was brand new, it was two chicks dancing in school uniforms in an empty classroom with the desks pushed back I think. Seemed to be pretty popular. Just can't remember the name of the group. Thanks!

BABYMETAL and Ladybeard are more like idol experiments than metal bands; I think bands like MAXIMUM The Hormone, Jinn and High and Mighty Color were pretty popular in the mid 00's and feature female vocals around heavier music, although the singers of MTH and HaMC were around a similar age to how old the lead of Babymetal is now (18) they weren't portrayed as a gimmick and were just singers of bands.

Babymetal is just some J pop idols thrown into a metal band as a stupid gimmick, they have nothing to do with the metal scene. I wouldn't be surprised if there are copycat bands popping up since people seem to like them for some reason. There are of course a number of Japanese metal bands with women in them or made up entirely of women(e.g Boris, Gallhammer, Xenolith Oger, Sigh to name some obvious and not so obvious examples), but that's the case in most metal scenes.

I remember reading that the girls in Babymetal said they'd never really listened to metal before their management decided they were going to be metal idols. If that affects your opinion of them then you're missing the point in a big way, though. They never try to hide the fact that they're an idol group. Since we're talking about Babymetal, can I lowkey steer the discussion towards other "heavy idol" groups? Some of the promising up-and-comers actually have harsh vocals. The first-all-girl metal band in Japan that I can think of is Show-Ya. They were from the 80s and were pretty popular. There's also some all-girl prog groups from that time period like Rosalia and Velvet Paw. So yeah, there's been a girl-band trend (non-pop girl bands, specifically) in Japan that is much larger than in most Western countries.
