News wire services have existed for a very long time and most non-local stories coming off them weren't researched by whoever broadcast/printed them. The only difference between then and now is that the original info was often surpassed by more accurate info before the 6.30 news went to air/next edition of a paper was published. Now, people demand up to the minute "news" 24/7, so everything gets published no matter how sketchy the details.
