We land more troops – keep on invading!

We need to do something about the allied air superiority here.

We take another unmanned island.

The British have moved up some light cruisers.

We come back in the afternoon with torpedoes.

We strike the Alor Star airfield.

We strike at Kavieng.

Kuching falls to our troops, on to the next target!

Our men arrive at Hong Kong and try and overwhelm the defences. Ahh, I've missed automatic shock attacks.

So this is our first quiet day – lots of troops unloading, lots of raids without much action.

To be fair, Grey's WiTE game glitched out after a patch and the Soviet AI stopped evacuating all of its industry. This allowed him to destroy like 2/3 of all Soviet tank production in the first year of the war.

It's kinda of a bummer, in uPen's excellent Soviet LP the German AI lost an army and then freaked out and ran home to germany crying like a baby.

Both were still fun all around though. :)

In a more serious note, how bad was losing all those transports and invasion troops from that lurking carrier? If this is a game about snowballing in the first few months, seems like minor incidents like that could really make it difficult to establish his perimeter before the invasion bonus wears off.

Losing transports is something Japan can't replace constantly. Losing some is pretty normal, as they'll be targeted by subs, aircraft, coastal guns, etc; you have to figure that the number of transports available will go down, but it'll take a while before you reach a critical level where you are no longer capable of doing anything.

We hit the Dane again. Hopefully she will go down today.

Another torpedo should sort it.

We take out a few attacking planes here.

We need to stop these attacks – they are not doing anything.

A new landing at Davao should distract the Americans.

Our forces at Lingayen are attacked, they need support.

We shatter a Chinese force.

Here we are less effective, we may need for forces to shift this unit.

We continue to push at Hong Kong – their defences are crumbling, and this should not be a long battle.

We hit the Chinese hard today, but I need to funnel more troops into the Philippines – this is a mistake I made last time, and will not repeat it!

No points for this, but I think I can believe it.
I push a load of planes forward to their new bases, and order more men to move form Japan to the Philippines.

Its going to take a few days, but lets hope I have things moving now!

Looks like we missed that carrier. Boo! Boo I say!

But, this was a Japanese problem that the allies were not able (or willing) to make use of. Perhaps most obvious in the Philippines and Moluccans.

Fred

P.S.. I've made some use of it in this scenario. Mind you I'm a poor beginner with WitP - this is my second try. I also have a specific purpose for playing it. It seems that purpose is about to be fullfilled. It can be seen in the end of the thread.:

I believe they had something like 500 transports available for their initial moves.

The enemy are fleeing Hong Kong – we intercept one of their convoys, but cannot do any damage. The Americans get an early hit.

Our men are not daunted, they come back at dawn and surprise the British ships – out opening salvo is a hit, and it goes downhill for the British from there.

On the land, we push forwards against another small force.

We clear some more railway. The Chinese take heavy losses getting in our way.

We have a day of rest at Hong Kong itself, but we still weaken the enemy.

Enemy ships are spotted, and we are forced to reroute convoys.

We strike at her, but 17 planes can only get one dud in.

The next wave gets a strike.

We return in the afternoon and hit a destroyer.

We lose more planes striking at Manilla harbour.

Our advancing troops destroy and American unit.

Its the same process on a smaller scale at Puerto Princesa.

A good day! We really hit their shipping today, I'm not sure how much we have sunk, but we've at least damaged a lot with a long way to go.

These are all realistic, but no points have come through yet. We'll see a jump in a few weeks I'm sure.

We lose our first ship to enemy submarine action.

We finish the Dragon and her escort.

Express delivery!

The American subs are active today.

We also have a sub in the area, but it makes a surface attack and takes a hit.

A cruiser and its escorts hunt down a cargo ship.

That's Palawan secured, time to island hop.

I sallied these cruisers out on day one to hunt ships fleeing Hong Kong. They get their kills today.

They then slam into another task force, but Commander Morishita ordered them to break off early – I can only assume they are conserving ammunition.

We continue to clear railway lines. I have troops in Manchuria I want to move forwards.

The Chinese are taking heavy losses today.

We push out of Canton and send the enemy threatening the city falling back in disarray.

The last fortifications at Hong Kong are reduced.

We bomb the enemy airfields in Malaya.

The planes I moved in yesterday take immediate effect.

We take Kaveng. Rabaul is now in sight....

Whoo, that was a busy day!

And a bloody one for the Allies!

I hope you have as good luck in sinking the British navy this time through as well Grey! (Still can't believe you are doing this again....)

Uhm, not seeing her on the ship list anywhere so I will just say here, she is a Type B1 Submarine. Also her crew can claim to have launched the single most damaging torpedo salvo. 6 torpedoes, all hit, 3 hit the Wasp, starting fires, and knocking out power. This destroyed damage control efforts, and eventually Wasp was abandoned, the other three hit the Battleship North Carolina and Destroyer O'brian, sinking the destroyer. North Carolina limped back to Pearl where she would be repaired. I learned something today!

I forget, wasn't there some tactic that a Japanese player used on some Matrix forums AAR of WITP where they pre-emptively attacked the Soviets to free up the garrison troops after cleaning them up? Do the Soviets get a Patton-style intervention event if the Japanese player advances too far into Siberia (Zhukov showing up to push Tito's poo poo in, I guess)?

The two strategies I'm familiar with are:

1. The way the non-Admiral's Edition land combat model worked (specifically that you could overstack by a lot, land units moved relatively quickly and Japanese armor was probably overly strong by stats), it was possible for the Japanese to directly attack the Soviets at the start of the war, blitz them and have a decent chance of winning. This required a significant commitment of troops, but if you pulled it off, that removed an entire theater and scored a huge amount of points. This isn't really possible anymore in WITP:AE

2. The Soviets require a certain amount of Japanese AV to be garrisoned to prevent them from activating, but the geographically they don't have to be on the border, so I think there are some shenanigans you could pull off as far as reassigning units across the different Theater HQs to allow you to either use the "garrison units" in other combat areas while still having their AV count for Soviet activation requirements, or allow you to cycle units in and out of the garrison HQ.

There are no "emergency reinforcements" triggered for the Soviets.
