Funny thing with brinkmanship is you can never tell if it's planned or if they're just a loving idiot.

IHS looks like an offshoot of some Russian defense contractor. Was propaganda always THIS obvious?

The contacts I have in Russia find most Russian news to be an incredible joke. One has said that, due to believing all of it .... unfortunately, "The Russian people got the leader that they deserved."

Clearly all the decent FSB propagandists are on holiday trying to get their buddies elected in Europe.

I don't see how a feeding frenzy for Russian Mafia dons defence contractors is any better than a feeding frenzy for US defence contractors.

I also don't see why everyone takes such a glee in defending Assad. I mean yes he's probably the best option we have right now, but that's not something to be smug or happy about.

E: This sort of smugness is how you get fucks like Tony Blair thinking brutal torturers are our friends, instead of desperate stopgaps to keep the peace.

So are the Syrian government's :itisarefugeejoke:

Seriously, if you're wondering where all the reasonable moderates went, they're running or hiding like any of us would

You are loving kidding right?

Extremists Muslims are the snakes and the so-called 'moderate' Muslims are the grass.

Wha? As in, harmless like grass?

I'm saying that, like any of us would, moderates might turn up for the protest but will get the hell out of there when it turns into a civil war. Violent tribal groups, violent religious sects and nationalist veterans tend to be a bit more up for it.

In protecting one, single minority yes. And even that by making them into a local majority, with predictable effects on the locals.

I'm more interested in what the Kurds do?

Watching the "Do we bomb the poo poo out of Syria?" debate in UK Parliament, they kept talking about the moderates who we will help to fight Daesh, and no fucker ever mentioned the Kurds ... the ones who are actively fighting Daesh on the ground, who have a well-trained army ..... nah gently caress em we won't use those troops. They're not psycho enough for us

Well they mentioned the fanciful figure of 70,000 moderates just waiting for the UK to join in so they can rise up. Might have included Kurds to make up the figures?

I think the whole debate was pretty embarrassing really, given that we fly such a small proportion of missions

(Furthermore, Erdogan is a loving liability)

If I was the president I'd say 'gently caress ya'll I'm helping the Kurds.' They're super progressive, relative to the area, too. Letting their women fight and drive cars and go to school good god.

Plus what's Turkey going to do about it now, join up with Russia? Haha not anymore suckers

If your end goal is ethnically homogenous areas, yeah, but then the Srpska Krajina is also a massive success by those goals.

Like I get it if you're ignorant and think that women not being allowed to drive or learn things is a mark of The Arabs In General, but that's actually just a position held by some countries in the Arabian Peninsula, and Syria in particular has very progressive women's rights for the region, due to the current government's background as a socialist movement.

Syrian women in government-controlled areas go to the same schools, colleges and universities, and attend the same classes as men, they can serve voluntarily in the military, and theoretically have decent rights in terms of labour equality, including childcare provision, and can divorce their husbands (albeit not as easily as men can divorce but it's not like Saudi Arabia or anything).

I'm not saying the Syrian regime is great or even good-to-mediocre in general, but trying to tar all Arab states with a big misogynistic brush is playing into the hands of the worst offenders in the Arab world, who would love you to think that their way of doing things is the accepted norm for the entire ethnicity.

Exactly.

For all those people who love Assad but think that moderates are a lie, consider that he was running a secular government. Which means a big, sheltered, mostly secular middle class to work in the civil service etc. Some of them probably thought they were living in a democracy right up until a soldier shot them for tweeting badthink.

I broadly agree but in the end a country is not a human being. The people alive today had no part in the Armenian genocide. Though for fucks' sake they could at least admit it happened.

Just overlook how even Hitler referenced the Armenian Genocide as the classic example of the world not giving a gently caress and therefore his crimes would also not cause reaction.

It's too late and Hitler was right :whitewater: - they got away with it clean and nothing we do today will create any kind of justice. At least we have accurate historical records for when the Turks decide to stop being colossal jackasses about the whole thing.

Besides, this thread seems to adore disgusting war criminals as long as they are anti-American keep the peace fight the media's most wanted.
