I wonder if Momochi spends the rest of the game locked up.

Fortunately (unfortunately?) Momochi is never heard from again for the rest of the game and his fate is only revealed in supplemental material (look forward to a bunch of it after the main game). So maybe he did have to spend the rest of his time locked up.

Demon info has been updated for dungeons 8 and 9.

I mentioned this before, but all of the update names come from 80's Japanese metal songs or albums, since our main character is named after a Japanese 80s metal vocalist. The last 5 updates were:

  • "Curtain of History," a song by Outrage from their 1988 album Black Clouds
  • The Law of Devil's Land, a 1983 album by Loudness
  • "Mind Collection," a song by Show-Ya from their 1985 album Masquerade Show
  • "Fast As Lightning," a song by Eliza from their 1988 album Something Like Hot
  • "Black Jail," a song by Altemis from their 1987 demo Messenger From the Moon

Update 11 - Dead Men Tell No Tales

There's one more area in Yarai that hasn't been explored yet: the sprawling Chinatown. Let's check in with them, shall we?

BGM: Chinatown
MUSIC: Wandering Hell

Looks like a nice enough place. There's even a restaurant.

CHINESE MAN: The Szechuan restaurant is closed today. With everything in Chinatown going out of business, we're going to go bankrupt soon.

That's not good. I kinda have a feeling that we're going to get ourselves wrapped up in this all too soon.

: I've got something good for you today. It's from a man named Chen in Chinatown.

There we go.

: It seems Chinatown was suddenly overrun with demons, and Guan Di is causing a disturbance over at the shrine. So, will you take care of Guan Di for him?

Bah, why the hell not.

>YES
NO

: That's what I like to hear. I'm sure you can calm down Guan Di somehow, right?

Shouldn't be too bad, if it's anything like it was when I visited. Which it obviously isn't.

DUNGEON 14 - CHINATOWN
New demons:
Xiuhtecuhtli Oumitsunu Culebre Berserker
Macabre Ammut Kudlak

BGM: Otherworld Dungeon 4

So, I'd wager that every RPG has "that dungeon." You know the one: the one that you dread playing, that you think about before deciding to replay the game, whose name makes you shudder.

Chinatown is "that dungeon."

I'll borrow a map to fully illustrate this point.

This dungeon has a whopping twenty-four warps, most of which you aren't going to actually use to get to the boss. None of the other dungeons have that many; for example, the final dungeon only has fourteen. The entire map is bigger than some of the earlier dungeons' floors combined and to add to the confusion, this dungeon has four different entrances.

The absolute worst part of these warps is that there's no indication that you've warped. Remember how older dungeons used the dumb black screen to show that you've warped? Not here. This is all you get:

If you aren't paying enough attention, it's possible to not even realize that you've warped. Okay, that's sorta a lie. Most of the warps do this. For some reason, a few of them follow the old rules and do the black-out screen when warping. Why? Who knows.

Apparently either the fans complained enough or the developers wised up, because the Special Box edition of the game came with a map of Chinatown.

I've also seen the graphics described as "garish," "gaudy," and leading to a "loss of composure" by several Japanese gamers, though I'm personally unsure exactly why they chose to describe them like that. At least it's not a boring, copy-pasted cave or something.

I will give Chinatown one thing, though: it's not as bad if you know the exact route to use. In addition, the demons within aren't that much tougher than the last dungeon so its pain comes solely from its design.

Speaking of demons, let's do an enemy round-up.

First up is Kudlak, who bleached his hair and changed his cape for his Soul Hackers design. His archenemy Kresnik is also in this game, but is only available via fusion. Kudlak can ruin your day because of his Vamp-causing ability Blood Sucker.

Next up is Macabre and Berserker. Macabre's design has remained the same, but Berserker got an overhaul on his colors, changing him from jaguar to a panther. He mostly showed up in tandem with Amazon, probably because they both use physical attacks.

Another furry(?) friend is Ammut, who also changed to a darker hue for future games.

Last we have two stone beasts - Xiuhtecuhtli and Oumitsunu. Neither are much trouble to take care of.

Finally...after many, many warps...

I finally made it.

GUAN DI: Fight...Fight...Do battle...with me...I will fight until your corpse lies at my feet...

:siren: Boss #16 - GUAN DI

BGM: Boss Battle

VS Hero Guan Di

Guan Di, known as Kantei Seikun in Japanese (and changed to Kansei Teikun in the PSP version), is a straight-up brawl. He only has one move, the healing Rest, and the only other thing in his arsenal is his regular attack.

Not that he needs anything else, with his attack at a good 23 power, almost 10 levels higher than any other boss, and the ability to hit up to 6 times per turn. Normally this translates to a tough battle, but there is an incredibly easy way to cheese this encounter.

All you need to do is use a move or item that reflects physical attacks. Congratulations, he can no longer hit you. Now all you need to do is pummel him until he goes down.

BGM: After the Battle

GUAN DI: ...I know not what I was doing. However, it seems that you have returned me to sanity, and for that I must thank you.
GUAN DI: There is an evil curse spreading throughout the land, one that is strong enough to rob me of my mind. This evil had long been sealed away, but it seems that there are those who wish to revive it once again.
GUAN DI: Your power will not be enough if you wish to stop their plot. Call upon me with the arcane art of fusion, and I shall lend you my strength...

Can't you just come with me instead? Seems easier. We can head back into the shrine if we want.

>Guan Di
The former hero Guan Yu, he is now worshiped as a god.

A quick trip to Marie's tells us that Chen will hand us our reward himself, so let's lead on over there.

BGM: Hagurumado Main Store

: Well, I really have to hand it to you for the work out there. I am Chen Jianmen. I help keep the peace in Chinatown. Marie and I are old acquaintances, and she referred me to you for my trouble. It seems that somebody is sending demons on a rampage, but us in Chinatown can't stay if we can't do business, and we can't do business if demons are just running amok.
: You truly helped us, and I really can't thank you enough. It may not be much, but I'd like you to accept this token of our gratitude. It's ¥50000.
: Well then, there is somebody I'd like to introduce you to...Come over here, Colonel.

: This is Cooper Smith, the colonel of the American forces stationed here in the Hirasaki JSDF base.

Are you ready for AMERICA? Smith here loves to use random instances of English, and his character profile states that his favorite food is hotdogs and his hobby is watching football. I'm surprised he didn't incorporate any good ol' red, white, and blue into his attire.

COOPER SMITH: I'm Cooper Smith, the commander in charge of the supply depot in the Hirasaki Base. It's good to meet you, Mister Kyouji Kuzunoha. You use demons to fight demons, right? I've got just the things you need.
: I'd like you to use our secret weapons. I want you to have them for helping out my old good friend Mister Chen. If you head west in the Yarai sewers, you'll end up underneath our weapons warehouse. You're welcome any time.

: Good for you, Kuzunoha. I'm glad that you and the Colonel were able to meet. Ah, here's your ID card. If you have this then you'll be able to get inside the base.

Remember back awhile when I entered the Yarai sewers and got yelled at in English and Japanese to get the hell out? Yeah, we can get it there now. The PSP version has a bug that allows you bypass locked doors, so if I was playing that version then I could have technically come in here before Chinatown.

SOLDIER: STOP! Stop right there! No one's allowed past without an ID.

SOLDIER: You've actually got an ID card? Heheheh, good on you. If you're here to see the Colonel, then head right on through.

SOLDIER: Hey you, did I hear that you actually fight with demons? And you got some powerful weapons from the Colonel? He must be good at business, if he can get some demon fighter like you to buy from him. But why'd he go around selling his wares to someone like you? It's not like any of the weapons actually belong to the Colonel.

BGM: Maruse Real Estate

: Ah, Mister Kyouji Kuzunoha. Good to see you made it here. This is a secret deal, so hurry up and tell me what you'd like.

Now that we've gotten past all that, we can buy guns and ammo from Cooper Smith. The catch? His wares suck. They're terrible and are actually worse than what you can get from Maruse, who is much more convenient. Frickin' Colonel, making me travel all over the sewers for nothing...

: Good luck, Mister Kyouji Kuzunoha.

Thanks.

SOLDIER: Here's a shortcut. Come again.

No thanks.

Update 12 - Down With the Master

After finishing up Chinatown, I head back to the detective agency and immediately get assaulted with info. Can't a guy catch a break around here?

BGM: Kuzunoha Detective Agency

: Kyouji, listen to me for a second. I noticed something about the seals. It looks like there's a pattern to their locations.

When did you even have time to look over this stuff? Are you doing it in your spare time in the middle of dungeons or something?

BGM: Cornered

: The first seal was near the vacant lot in Mt. Kasagi...

: The second was at Hikawa Shrine...

: The third was at the museum in Seaside Park...

: And the fourth was at East Asia TV in Yarai...

: If you connect them all...you get the four points of a magic circle.

: That means the fifth point should be in Hibarigaoka...Most likely in the Tendou mansion.

: Let's go find the fifth seal over in Hibarigaoka.

In MegaTen games, I suppose it is wise to look for ritual magic symbols to find your next destination. Looks like it worked for the bad guys, at least. Alright, let's do what Rei said and head on over to the mansion.

I pointed it out the first time we went to Hibarigaoka, but the Tendou mansion is the fancy-schmancy Japanese-looking castle. Wonder what his neighbors think.

: Yo, look who showed up. I'll open the gate up.

Kyouji! Look who's actually being useful. I guess inhabiting the body of a known punk has its perks. The mansion's gate slooowly opens up (and this animation will play every time you leave and come back in).

: Come on, hurry up and get in.

DUNGEON 15 - TENDOU MANSION
New demons:
Tattooman Da Peng Barbatos Titania
Yurlungur Hypnos Python Vetala
Kanaloa

BGM: Otherworld Dungeon (Tendou Mansion)

This is my favorite dungeon theme in the entire game, and as such it comes highly recommended. Since "Tendou" means "Paradise," I often see this track referred to as "Paradise Mansion," which is actually a pretty cool name.

I also really like this dungeon's aesthetics, and it's not very often that an RPG has you in a Japanese mobster's place. The shoji screens open up into rooms with patterned walls, though sometimes it's easy to pass by doors since they blend in with the wall.

Even the staircases and elevator are elegant.

But, as much as I like this dungeon's looks, the dungeon itself is another story.

The entirety of the second floor is a COMP-free zone filled with warps, there are two separate dark zones, and fourteen pitfalls spread out over seven floors.

There are some gang members and lowly thugs standing around. Their overall attitude makes it seem that this dungeon and the demons inside are something they're used to.

PUNK: Hah? What're you lookin' at, dumbass?! Lookin' for trouble or something?!!

GANGSTER: The boss wanted youth. You know, the eternal kind. It changed him, made him go crazy. He had all the women and money he could want, but I guess it wasn't enough...I still don't know what he's really after.

PUNK: Whaddya want, huh?! I oughta bust your face up! You little poo poo!!

GANGSTER: The boss really changed. He didn't used to be anything like this...

There's also some other "thugs" around.

Tattooman is the only new one, though both Killer Chopper and Hooligan make their reappearance. It's hard to tell, but Tattooman does indeed have a tattoo of Jack Frost flipping you off with the words "Go To Frozen."

Golden birdfish Da Peng and rainbow gummy snake Yurlungur almost always showed up together. Da Peng is annoying because he's incredibly resistant to physical attacks, the monster actually made me go through menus to get to magic! I picked up Yurlungur because c'mon he's a cool rainbow snake.

Python shows up, his sprite looking a lot more blue than in later games. Barbatos, on the other hand, is the same color that he will continue to be for MegaTen games to come.

Vetala's design for this game is pretty much the same as his Shin Megami Tensei II appearance, but he goes through a drastic redesign for Soul Hackers. Interestingly, he shares a design with Nalagiri, though in a different color.

The last to show up in my run-through was Hypnos. This design was used only in Devil Summoner, but Hypnos himself showed up as a boss in both Megami Ibunroku Persona and Persona 3.

And onto the last floor. It amuses me that the boss felt the need to have an incredibly long hallway between the elevator and his room. Perhaps to give lower members time to think on what they'd done to deserve having to see the boss.

Nice taste in screens, though.

BGM: Conversation

TENZAN: What underling sent you?

: Did you come here knowing that I am Tenzan Tendou, head of the Tendou-gumi? You deserve some respect, makin' it all the way up here, but I'm not going to go easy on you. Hurry on up and die.

:siren: Boss #17 - TENDOU

BGM: Boss Battle

VS Haunt Tendou

Tendou isn't too much of a problem overall. He marks the first appearance of Outsider's Law, a medium Almighty attack that seemed intent on never hitting my party half of the time.

Venom Flash is the most annoying because it can cause Poison. Poison causes a sharp decrease in physical power, and since Tendou is strong against magic, we really need those physical attacks to hit hard.

He can use the useless Vampire Kiss, which causes Vamp. This would be bad except he's a boss and we're going to be thrown right back outside afterwards to heal. The last trick up his sleeve is Dekaja, which nulls all buffs. Good thing he never used it.

: Guh, I can't regenerate...More blood...I need more of the blood my underlings collected for the golden statue...I can still fight...if I get that blood...

Surprise! Our favorite priest is here.

: That will be all, Tendou. Your role here is over. There is no need to waste any more energy.
: You and your followers bought land and destroyed the seals. You became vampires to collect blood. You have completed your job.
: Even if you traded blows with this Devil Summoner again, there is no way you would win. You cannot fight, and you are of no use to me.
: All that's left is to return to being that pathetic old man you once were, and die. Well then, farewell.

Er, Naoto and Rei, you could probably run after Sid. I mean, you managed to kick his butt last time, so I have confidence in you. I guess it's too late now...

: ...So this is death...Dammit, all this time I've danced to their tune and now I'm just gonna die...

And we're kicked out. Perhaps some of his underlings escorted us off the premises? Either way, it's back to the detective agency for us.

BGM: Kuzunoha Detective Agency

: ...Is Mr. Kuzunoha the private detective here? I'm Hatano. Please help us look for our daughter! I beg of you! Our daughter Kumiko has been kidnapped.

Again?

: You were at our house during that commotion the other day, and we don't know who else to ask. Kumiko was kidnapped by someone calling himself Sid Davis. Please! Please help my daughter!

Whoa, Sid's a busy man. I guess he works fast.

: This is a request from me as well. We went to the police, but they didn't listen to us at all. Just please. Please save our daughter. We'll pay whatever you ask for.

>Will you agree to help find Kumiko?
>YES
NO

Man, they musta missed me basically macking on Kumiko on their front doorstep. Of course I'll help!

: Thank you so, so much. Please do anything you can to save her.
: We're so glad you decided to help, Mr. Kuzunoha. Somebody said they saw her in the Chuou district...

Now this is what I wanted. I finally get to be a detective, just like Kyouji claims to be! I can gather clues, talk to people, piece things together...

...Actually, maybe I'm more suited for the devil-busting business.

Update 13 - Devil's In The City

Last time we actually got a real job for our fake career, but it wouldn't do to just go in without any planning.

I mentioned it awhile back, but there's another use for the Zoma, and it's time to actually put that to use. Zoma are needed to fuse the Hero race of demons. The race, as implied by the name, is made up of famous historical figures and all but one have a skill that's exclusive to them. Like the Zoma, they all start at Level 10 Loyalty.

The road to getting them, however, can be annoying and often requires a lot of experimentation with fusion. All Heroes are the result of the fusion of a certain level Zoma and a certain demon, no exceptions. The Zoma was easy enough to get, but the demon, well...

I hit the streets recruiting and fusing, and I hit it hard. Compare my money and MAG during this mission to the values beforehand. Since I'm playing the Saturn version, I don't have access to the Demon Compendium, which would make it much easier to get the right demon. Here are some of the fusion-only demons that passed through my hands.

I got Kresnik, Kudlak's archenemy who I mentioned awhile back. Both Airavata and Cybele got changed from red to blue in later designs, though I think I prefer the red.

I also got quite a few ladies. Hariti is a pink color here to go along with earlier releases, but gains a more human color in her later design. Palles Athena, who was essential to my fusions, has a white color scheme here but gains a red and black one for later games. She's most well-known as a Persona in Persona 3. Last is Black Maria, who I will actually use for another Hero fusion down the road.

All of this effort was to get my hands on this particular guy - Hachiman. With this and a level 55 Zoma, I was able to finally make a fan-favorite.

YOSHITSUNE: Nice meeting you!!

Yoshitsune! He comes equipped with his signature skill Hassou Tobi, a physical attack that hits all enemies eight times. He also replaces Leanan Sidhe with the skill Provocation, can reflect physical attacks back with Tatami Shield, and can inflict Close with Laughing Yakusi. Overall a pretty useful guy.

Alright, enough of that hellish mess, onto investigations! Kumiko's parents said that she'd been spotted around Chuou, so let's head on over.

Now, where haven't we been? Could it be the hugeass city hall that just screams "suspicious"?

Yep. Maybe I am good at this "detective" stuff.

DUNGEON 16 - NEW CITY HALL
New demons:
Peri Dakini Dominion Yaksa
Catoblepas Titan Anzu Girimehkala
Rukh Cerberus Botis Oberon
Mushussu

BGM: Otherworld Dungeon 5

The first appearance of this theme. Poor Otherworld Dungeon 4, it really got the short end of the stick.

As you can tell from the outside, this is one tall building - 60 floors in all, though we'll only be visiting 12 of them. The city hall is a pretty fancy place, as it should be since it cost some big bucks.

Apparently none of that money went into the infrastructure, since there's plenty of pits that you'll have to fall through as well as a dark zone.

Heading up.

As you keep going higher, the flooring changes. The red is a nice touch, but I'm not much for the green squares.

There's plenty of new demons running amok. Anzu's design is based off of his SMT design and was changed for his Soul Hackers appearance. Another blue beast is Catoblepas, who was changed to a more natural brown for later appearances.

Dakini and Yaksa showed up a lot together, as did Peri and Dominion. Peri's colors were muted for future games, and Dominion went from red to blue.

Titan's appearance has stayed at the same for almost all of his appearances throughout the series. Botis went for a darker color in later games.

Hitting the 60th floor grants us access to the mayor's office. Alright, let's bust this guy!

BGM: Conversation

MAYOR FUJIWARA: H-Hieee! Spare me! Please don't kill me!
: ...I-I don't know anything.

Oh. I guess not. Sorry for scaring you.

: Yamashiro was in charge of everything, from the redevelopment plan to the town hall construction. All we did was follow orders. Please believe me.
: He said something about a final ceremony and went to the Diet Building. You can get to it from the door across the hall. Here's the key. I helped you, so please just leave me alone...

>Received the Diet Building key.

Now we can get through the previously locked door. The second part of the dungeon gets us some new demons.

Classic Cerberus shows up, along with Rukh. Mushussu appears as well, looking much more rat-like than later colorings.

Last were Girimehkala and Oberon. Girimehkala is especially annoying due to his physical absorption, I actually had to bust out some MP-healing items since Rei was working overtime.

The second part of the dungeon also has some downright devious puzzles going for it.

For example, there's a series of one-way doors that can potentially send you back to halfway through the dungeon. Go through a door and...

...now there's a wall. Hope you're going the right way.

There's also a series of three hallways with near unnoticeable warps, similar to Chinatown. Before the warp:

And after.

The worst is the warps that appear right before you get to the boss room.

The pink warps only work if you enter them from below, and the orange warps only work if you enter them from the left. Cue players endlessly walking into the orange warps without thinking of heading backwards to activate the pink warps before throwing their controller in disgust.

I managed to get to level 60 and maxed out my Strength stat along the way. I guess Vitality is up next. I need to watch out when it comes to my Speed, because the original game has a particularly cruel bug: if you raise either Rei's or the hero's Speed over 25, they will always go last in battle. It only affects their base state so you're free to go hog wild with equipment, but it's really a punch in the gut if you forget. Luckily this was fixed for re-releases.

We manage to get out of there without any controller abuse, so into the real enemy's room.

BGM: Conversation

YAMASHIRO: Well done, Sid Davis. I've sealed the soul of that girl you caught in the pseudo Astral Plane. Now all that's left is to ask her about where that book is.
: Sir Yamashiro, it seems that a rat has slipped in.
: I'll take care of it. Don't worry about me, head on in and take care of that girl.
: I will, Sir.

: Welcome, Devil Summoner. It seems that you arrived too late, as our plan will soon be complete. Once we get our hands on those notes concerning the last seal, we can remove it.
: Well then, you should be happy that I am going to take care of you. You will perish before the seal is removed and the great evil spirit returns. You will even get to see my true form, Demiurge, before you die.

:siren: Boss #18 - DEMIURGE

BGM: Boss Battle

VS Tyrant Demiurge

Demiurge has been a boss in every game he's appeared in except Card Summoner, and is probably most well-known for his appearance in Strange Journey.

He is a particularly nasty boss this time around. His most dangerous/annoying skills are Death Ring, which inflicts Paralysis, and Petra Eye, which inflicts Stone. Stone is particularly dangerous because he loves using his regular attack and can hit 4 to 6 times per turn.

He can also use Tetrakarn to reflect physical attacks back (not much of a problem since I'm faster than him) and Dekunda to remove debuffs (also not a problem, because I exclusively used buffs).

In terms of offense, his only other skills are the multi-target Almighty attack Megidola and the Ice attack Absolute Zero, both of which aren't as dangerous as his regular attack.

: Kyouji, I only have enough magic to send one of us to the pseudo Astral Plane. I want you to hurry up and go get Sid.

>Go to the pseudo Astral Plane?
YES
>NO

Naaaah, I'll take care of that next time. Who knows what the heck is gonna go down in there? Gotta prepare first.

: Sid Davis is in here right now, and I want to go settle the score. You want to save your girl from back when you were Naoto, right? You're going to have to get Sid for that. Looks like our goals are the same, so let's team up and defeat him.

So, Kyouji joins us for this dungeon. If I'm honest, he's really not that great. His stats are too balanced to be of a lot of use in either physical or magic attacks, and his MP is far lower than Rei's. This is compounded by the fact that almost all of his skills take at least 20 MP, which means it's very easy to run out of MP. He does have the invaluable skill Sabbath, which allows us to summon demons without using MAG and summon them even in COMP-free zones - which this entire dungeon is.

Devil Summoner isn't too sadistic, so you can easily head back to the real world if you feel the need.

: I can't leave here. If you want to go back then you're on your own.

But the dungeon is pretty short and the demons aren't too tough, so there's no need for me to go back. Let's head out.

: Wait, let me grab my stuff. Over here.

After this short interlude.

BGM: Astral Meeting

: My weapon and equipment's here, so let me just get it.

If you keep forgetting to upgrade your stuff then fear not, because you can "borrow" (steal) Kyouji's stuff for yourself. I grabbed his sword for myself, but everything else was either the same as or weaker than my current set-up.

: I've got my weapon and armor now, so let me put it on and then we can go get Sid.

And now we're actually off. Other than being a COMP-free zone, this dungeon has one very interesting gimmick - it loops. If you head west then you'll eventually be in the east and vice versa. It also has a few warps, but it's nothing to really worry about, especially in comparison to the last few dungeons.

The man-made dungeon's even got some treasure. Very fancy.

The problem of Kyouji's less-than-stellar MP is solved by the inclusion of a heal space about halfway through the dungeon. I got my MAG up to a more reasonable level, so I could use it no problem.

There aren't too many new demons this time around, and since it's a COMP-free zone we can't do any recruiting.

First up is Doppelganger. Early MegaTen titles had the Doppelganger appear as a faceless shadow, but he actually looks like us (er, Kyouji) this time around, down to the same sword. Like almost every appearance, he reflects all physical attacks back our way, which is kinda a big pain when all we have is Kyouji.

Also of note is Rangda. She tends to reflect at least one if not all forms of physical attacks in most of her appearances, but not this time.

Es, along with Doppelganger, only appears in this dungeon. Due to the nature of what it's based off of, I'm going to go ahead and say that was done for symbolic reasons.

The last two to appear were Grendel and Throne (with the first appearance of his wheel of fire design).

After a bit of warping fun, I make it to Sid.

BGM: Conversation

: Now listen to me, Kumiko. I know that you have Azuma's book, so I need you to tell me where it is. I could force myself into your mind, but I like to avoid getting rough with a lady when I can help it.
: Come now, tell me where it is. Your soul will be trapped here unless you tell me.

: ...Hm? Who's there?
: Two Kyouji Kuzunohas? ...No, that's not right. Only one of you is Kuzunoha...
: The other is...Oh, Naoto Shibata, the one who died at the construction site. Yes, I see. So you really did die, Kyouji Kuzunoha. Then Naoto Shibata must have taken residence in your body. That must be why my magic didn't work. I'm going to have to pay you back in full for this little trick you pulled on me.
: That's right, I suppose you being here means you defeated Demiurge? I'm very grateful. He helped me to remove the seals by manipulating the Tendou-gumi and the mayor, but he fulfilled his duty and is of no use to the organization now. You've saved me the work of getting rid of him myself.
: Now then, since you two refused to die, I'll just have to finish what I started.

:siren: Boss #19 - SID DAVIS (2ND BATTLE)

BGM: Boss Battle

VS Fiend Sid

Compared to Demiurge, Sid is a huge pushover. He has 1300 less HP, can only hit 2 to 4 times per turn, and has so-so physical and magical attack power.

How well this battle goes depends on his skill Vice Gospel. It'll hit for some damage, but its danger comes from the fact that it will inflict a random ailment. So depending on what you get stuck with, this battle will either be easy or annoying. I tended to get hit with Charm most of the time.

AMAZON: I am a butterfly of the night...A fickle lady.

He can also inflict Mute with his skill Makafuji.

Other than those two attacks, his demon-only attack Magic Bullet makes a return. His last two attacks are the Ice attack Mabufula and the Psionic attack Mahapsy. This was the easiest boss in quite a while.

: Lucky whelp...I'll remember this! I don't have any more time to play with you. Goodbye.

Sid Davis says this line when you beat him in his boss appearance in Soul Hackers, so thank you to Atlus USA for that line's translation!

: You're...Naoto...
: Naoto! You're alive? You're really alive...? So you were alive all this time as that detective Mr. Kuzunoha. When I heard you wouldn't make it, I was crushed...it was only then that I understood my true feelings towards you...
: I need to tell you where I hid the professor's book. You know, that one I checked out when we went to the library.
: ...It's in the Yarai Ginza coin locker. The locker number is...aaah! My body is calling me away!!
: ...The number is...my birthday...

: ...Must've been Sid who called her back. I need to get out of here soon...Oh, but Naoto Shibata, you're not coming back.

What.

: You're in my body and my soul's here now. This is where the body and soul of Devil Summoner Kyouji Kuzunoha are going to come back together. Your role here is over. The rest of this fight is up to me.

Wait, no.

: Farewell, Naoto. Rest in peace ...Later.

No no no.

BGM: Sanzu River

Not this again.

: The soul of Naoto Shibata. It is your time to cross the Sanzu River, as it will be for all who die. Come, Naoto Shibata, and join me on the other side...

Kyouji!

You son of a bitch!

Alright, I have to apologize again. The next update will be later than I wanted because I'm having trouble getting internet at my house, so the only computer I have with internet access are the ones at school. Update 15 - From Hell With Love

DUNGEON 18 - AVICI HELL

BGM: Otherworld Dungeon (Astral World)

Last time I got duped by Kyouji and sent to hell. They're nice enough to send a welcoming crew.

PRETA: Hey, looks like somebody new is here. This is Avici Hell. Once you're here, you're never getting out.

I don't like the sound of that. Wait, Avici Hell? Otherwise known as neverending hell or the lowest circle of hell? Where have I heard that...

Update 2 posted:

: Hey, just know that I'm going to take my body back...Until then, don't you dare get even a scratch on it...Or else I'll drop you straight to the lowest circle of hell...

Well I'll be. He may be an rear end in a top hat, but at the very least Kyouji does what he says he will. I like guys with a strong sense of duty.

This dungeon could be considered another form of hell because it's basically just one big warp puzzle. Not to the point of annoyance that Chinatown was, but somewhat close. It even has everybody's favorite "walk back into where you just warped to" warps.

It seems that even though we were stripped of our body, we still have our GUMP and our demons. Hope that's not too much of a problem for you, Kyouji. Though he did say this was the spare one that he left with Victor...Eh, not my problem.

A nice aspect of this dungeon is its extremely low encounter rate - if you're lucky, you might be able to get through without running into even one demon. There's no new demons here, and most of the demons aren't at that high a level anyway. We do get to see the return of Preta and Slime, who haven't appeared since the very first dungeon.

There's a few more denizens of hell to talk to, as well as two heal spaces for our convenience.

PRETA: I used to be a human, y'know~. But since I've been here for so long, I turned into this creature.

PRETA: Hee-ho, hee-ho, I'm lost~
Hee-ho, hee-ho, inside the~
Hee-ho, hee-hoo, warp maze, ho~

Oh no, Jack! What'd you do to get sent down here?

PRETA: I was sent here because of all the sins I committed in my life.

Why'd I get sent to Avici anyway? I haven't done anything bad, except I guess rob a museum blind for my own profit. I guess this shows the true extent of Kyouji's powers.

After fumbling around for a bit, I make my way to my destination.

BGM: Sanzu River

: ...Who came all this way through Avici Hell? I see, it's the soul of Naoto Shibata.

: Now I must ask of you: do you wish to return to your physical body?

>YES
NO

C'mon, Charon, what kind of question is that?

: It is regrettable, but the Sanzu River can only be crossed one way. Return to Avici.

Argh, no!

Alright, let's try again. No, Charon, I came all this way just for a little chat.

: Well then, I will recognize those who passed through Avici just to speak with me.
: Since you came all the way here, I will tell you the truth of your death. Your passing was no accident; in fact, it was I who carried it out at the request of Kyouji Kuzunoha.

Kyouji Kuzunoha: screwing me over since the very beginning.

: After he died at the hands of Sid Davis, his soul was trapped in the pseudo-Astral Plane. Though he could not carry out his work as a Devil Summoner, he still wished to carry out his duties. Just before Sid killed you, I was to take your soul and place it into his body. All this just to fulfill his duties as a Devil Summoner...
: But the fact still remains that you were used as a sacrifice, Naoto Shibata. However, you traveled through Avici with your own power, so I will allow you to cross back into the world of the living. The soul of Kyouji Kuzunoha, can you hear me?

: Charon, I'm a little busy here. What do you want?
: ...Hey, why is Naoto there?! Don't tell me he actually went all the way through Avici?
: Are you still unable to return to your body?
: Shut up, I've almost got it. Just a bit more and I'll get my body back.
: You cannot. Your soul and body have been separated for too long. You have truly died.
: By the way, the soul of Naoto Shibata crossed through Avici alone. You said that he would make a poor substitute, but it seems that's not so, doesn't it? Since you cannot return to your body, you will have to let Naoto Shibata take over.

Truth bombs dropping so hard that even Kyouji is rendered speechless.

: I will take your silence as indication that you have accepted your fate. Naoto Shibata, return to the human world in the body of Kyouji Kuzunoha.

Sorry, Kyouji! Have fun body-hopping again!

: ...Kyouji...Kyouji!

: Thank god, I was worried...A lot happened after you went to the pseudo-Astral Plane. Kumiko Hatano left, almost like she was possessed. Then you seemed to be having a nightmare, it was so sudden that you startled me.
: You started muttering about the coin locker, then started yelling something like "I have to go back, I have to go back."
: Are you okay? Can you stand up? Come on, let's go back to the office.

BGM: Kuzunoha Detective Agency

: Hey, don't worry about paying me back or anything. I'd say I still haven't finished repaying you for saving me back at the museum.

Ah, the museum reminds me that I haven't talked to Redman in awhile. To the internet!

>Cannot access the server while system maintenance is being performed.

But how will I get vaguely worded advice from my boy Redman? I guess I'll have to find somebody in Yarai Ginza to tell me what to do next. Maybe Marie?

: It's getting so dangerous around here now. I'll have to get away from here for awhile.

Hey, wait!

>Nobody's here...

Dammit, this means she's not going to give me all the money she cheated me out of with that "agent's fee" stuff she pulled. Alright, let's try Club Ezekiel.

GIRL IN BLUE: That Kumiko Hatano sure has terrible taste in men. First she goes to Seaside Park with some loser, and now she's hanging around Chuou with some dark-skinned creep.

I resent that first part, but thanks for the info. Still hanging around Chuou, are you, Sid? Let's get that book before we head out.

>You're at the coin lockers.
Which locker do you want to open?

You actually expect me to remember your birthday, Kumiko? Only one of these actually corresponds to a date, so let's get into locker 0130.

>Opened locker 0130. You got the book "A Discussion of Ancient Japanese Civilization." Inside the book is a memo from Professor Azuma, which reads: "Beneath the earth, below the hills where birds dance around in the heavens, turn the stone plug and release the water." Got the professor's notes.

What's with video games and people leaving cryptic messages? Is Azuma actually going to remember what the heck he meant when he wrote that? Now then, let's head to the one place in Chuou we haven't been - the park in the middle.

BGM: Sid Davis

: I've been waiting for you, Kuzunoha. No, I suppose I should call you Naoto Shibata.

: Kuzunoha...sorry, Shibata. I have your girlfriend Kumiko Hatano here. She is completely unharmed, and I would like to return her to you that way. If you want me to do so, then listen to me. I know you have that book, and the memo inside it. I don't want the memo back, I just need you to do what it says.
: Once you do so, then I will let her go. Do you understand, Shibata? Come meet us inside the park when you're done.

Sid, if you want to be lazy and make me do all the work for you then just say so instead of dancing around the issue. That's kind of your thing, isn't it?

Now then, that memo leaves us with a bit of thinking to do. But just a little bit. The kanji for "Hibari" in Hibarigaoka means "skylark" while the "oka" part means "hills," so that solves the first part. The "beneath the earth" part means the sewers, so our destination is somewhere within the Hibarigaoka sewers.

As always, the Hibarigaoka sewers is basically the same as any other. Our destination is on the third floor, but there's a certain man we need to meet for the last time.

BGM: Doctor Thrill

: The Zoma I put all my soul into is finally complete. You could even call its body a weapon of its own, kekekeke.

: Oh, here ya are. You'll be breathing yer final breath right here. My Gargantua 8 is gonna completely destroy you. This Special Remix Version's based off of the super-ultra strong art of kenpo.
: Well then, time to call it out!! Demon of flesh!! Gargantua 8!!

GARGANTUA 8: Oraoraoraaa!!

:siren: BOSS #20 - GARGANTUA 8

VS Zoma Gargantua 8

Aside from his JoJo-esque cry, Gargantua 8 is known for his ruthless physical power. His regular attack can knock off a chunk of HP, but the move to really watch out for is Diablo de Corps. It hits three times for some major damage and can even inflict Shock if you're unlucky. In one of my runs, it took out Rei in a single turn. Luckily in this run he decided to attack me and Yoshitsune, both of whom reflected it right back at him. Without Diablo de Corps, Gargantua 8 isn't much of a problem.

His other two moves are the Almighty attack Megidola and the buff-erasing Dekaja. It was a mighty fine try, Thrill, but unfortunately it wasn't enough.

:...I-It lost...I can't believe my Gargantua 8 lost. All the Gargantuas up to 8 lost.
: I'm gonna quit this whole Zoma-building mess. Jeez, I'm just so sick of it. Well, this is goodbye...

Spoiler: he does not quit the "whole Zoma-building mess" and reappears with a new one in Soul Hackers. At least stick to your principles, Thrill.

And one of the better reasons to fight Thrill appears: another Dolly Kadmon. If you already have a Zoma or Hero, then fighting Thrill will result in another Dolly Kadmon to use. I'll be putting this one to use next update.

Alright, now to get to the stone plug or whatever the heck Professor Azuma's metaphorical note meant. It's out of the way on the third floor.

Okay, so I guess the Hibarigaoka sewers aren't exactly the same.

>It appears to be a stone hut built in ancient times.
There's a stone plug. Turn it?

Oh what, it was actually a stone plug? Either have all of the note be a metaphor or none of the note be a metaphor, Azuma. Let's turn it.

There she goes! And that does...what, exactly?

Update 16 - Bad Priest

Last time I fulfilled Sid's request, so it's time to go rescue my girlfriend! Well, I've gotta do something first, but then I'll be off.

I got another Dolly Kadmon, so I'll be putting it to good use. Using the Black Maria I fused awhile back, I can now make Jeanne D'Arc.

JEANNE D'ARC: I am the Hero Jeanne D'arc. I will join you in the battle for charity, equality, and freedom.

While Yoshitsune is for attacking, Jeanne D'arc is for support. She can cause some damage with her attack Misty Blade, but her two stand-out skills are Virgin Pray and Hold In My Arms. Virgin Pray is exclusive to her and revives all dead party members while Hold In My Arms heals all party members for a good chunk of HP. She also has Penta Wall which reflects magic attacks, but unfortunately she isn't quick enough to have it be of much help. Still, her recovery skills are drat good and she frees up Rei to do other things during battle.

With that taken care of, it's time to do meet Sid. He said to meet us inside the park which means there's a dungeon standing between us and my girlfriend.

DUNGEON 19 - YOUJU FOREST

BGM: Otherworld Dungeon 5

Luckily this dungeon is a complete breeze compared to the ones I've gone through lately. No gimmicks, only a single warp, and it has a low encounter rate.

The name of this forest, Youju (Mystic Tree), is the Japanese name for the Wood race of demons. Amusingly, there are no Wood demons found inside this dungeon.

I hope the forest isn't usually this color. Purple seems like a really unhealthy hue for a tree to have.

Would you look at that, damage floors. I haven't seen those in forever. It's like I'm back at the beginning of this game.

And, with nary an exciting or dangerous moment, I'm done with the dungeon.

BGM: Conversation

: It seems the entrance to the ancient tomb has opened, so I will be heading in. If I don't, then I will never understand what lies within. Well, I'll let her go as promised.

: ...I have to go. The sealed soul in the ancient tomb is calling me...

: Oh dear. At least she's free. It seems she's been acting of her own free will. I followed through on my promise, but I suppose we're both heading in the same direction. Fufufufu.
: Well, shall we go chasing after her? Farewell.

Sid, I know that technically wasn't your fault, but I'm blaming you anyway. Stop messing around with my girlfriend!

And here's the reason for having such an easy dungeon: it's the only way to get to the final dungeon. The skill Traesto returns you to the beginning of the dungeon, but in this case using it in Youju Forest when you're coming from the final dungeon will just return you to the entrance of the final dungeon, not the entrance of Youju Forest.

After getting ready and stocking up on items, I head back through the forest and into the final dungeon.

DUNGEON 20 - ANCIENT TOMB MAZE
New demons:
Yamata no Orochi Cherub Tao Tie Abraxas
Taowu Huoniao Ouroboros Gogmagog

BGM: Otherworld Dungeon (Ancient Tomb)
MUSIC: Hidden Track

The music for this dungeon serves as the backdrop to a little hidden goodie. If you put your Devil Summoner disc in a CD player or computer, then a hidden track will play. On it, somebody reads through the game's intro while the dungeon music plays...kinda. The game intro, found in the game manual, is similar but not the same as the paragraph spoken in the hidden track. For comparison: the manual's intro and the hidden track.

Youju Forest was the calm before the storm, because the ancient tomb is packed to the brim with almost every dungeon trick in the book: warps, one-way doors, damage floors, pits, conveyor belt floors, spinning tiles, and a convoluted series of stairways. There's a reason this dungeon's called the Ancient Tomb Maze. Even the first floor has two warps that will send you straight back to the beginning of the dungeon.

I do like that whoever made this tomb had the decency to label the stairwells. Wouldn't want anybody getting lost, after all.

A particularly fun room is found on B1: six pits, and only one leads to the correct floor. This is getting close to SMT3's crazy dungeon designs.

Despite being the final dungeon, there aren't too many new demons running around here. We have Tao Tie and Taowu, two of China's Si-xiong or Four Perils.

Both Yamata no Orochi and Cherub give us several heads for the price of one.

There's also Abraxas. He's a chicken with snakes for legs. He's cool.

After dragging myself down to B6...

>The stone door is sealed shut.

Splendid. There's two guardians on this floor, and we'll have to eliminate them both to move forward.

First is the one on the right.

ZOMA: I am Yasomagatsuhi. It is my duty to protect the door to the burial chamber. I cannot allow you to disrupt Princess Inaruna's slumber.

:siren: BOSS #21 - YASOMAGATSUHI

VS Zoma Yasomagatsuhi

Yasomagatsuhi is most well-known for his crazy appearance in SMT4, while he looks downright quaint here.

Yasomagatsuhi specializes in magic, both because he uses some powerful magic and because he absorbs any magic we throw at him. Most of his attacks can cause some form of ailment as well, though I lucked out and didn't get inflicted with anything. The one attack that can actually cause some damage is Hellish Flame.

>Zoma Yasomagatsuhi has been defeated.

One down, one to go. If we check back in on the stone door...

>It seems the stone door has opened a crack.

Time to crack that door wide open.

ZOMA: I am Oumagatsuhi. It is my duty to protect the door to the burial chamber. I cannot allow you to disrupt Princess Inaruna's slumber.

Hey man, get your own line! Buncha lousy, unoriginal demons...

:siren: BOSS #22 - OUMAGATSUHI

VS Zoma Oumagatsuhi

Unlike his brother, Oumagatsuhi was doomed to a life of obscurity as he only makes an appearance here and in Card Summoner. Well, I guess he appears as a giant ship in Raidou 1.

This boss posed a bit of a problem for me, because my team is rather physical and his physical defense is pretty tough, so I had to devise a plan instead of just letting Rei pelt him with Makakaja-enhanced magic.

Both Naoto and Yoshitsune reflected his most powerful attack, Mash Flesh, right back at him.

For his other two attacks, Flare Rush and Stun Crash, I had to pull out some items and Yoshitsune's Tatami Shield to reflect them right back. I also purposely lowered my defense so that I could throw even more damage back in his face. It was a bit of a slow-going, but I managed it.

>Zoma Oumagatsuhi has been defeated.

Back to the door.

>The stone door can now be opened.

Will you go through the door?
>YES
NO

Let's get out of here.

Onwards...in the next update.

Update 17 - Journey Is Over

BGM: Otherworld Dungeon (Ancient Tomb)

Last time we defeated Princess Inaruna's bodyguards, so it's time to venture further in. A few new demons made their appearance on the last floors.

The giant Gogmagog and Ouroboros appear, and the tiny bird Huoniao shows up as well.

The last big hurdle before getting to the final boss is a floor of pure warps. All the spots labeled in pink are warps, with some requiring you to enter them from a certain side. As another "screw you," this floor also has one-ways doors that will take you back halfway through the dungeon.

Down we go.

And we made it. The COMP is always in the red on this floor, meaning it's got the highest encounter rate in the entire game.

BGM: Astral Meeting

: Now, Princess Inaruna. It is time to revive that ancient grudge. Unleash all of that hatred that has been trapped with you all this time.
: I have brought one who carries your lineage, a woman of your direct bloodline, who has come to reincarnate you.

: ...You finally made it, but it's too late now. I have removed the seal, and Kumiko Hatano will soon become the vessel for Princess Inaruna's soul.
: Her confines have been lifted, and there is nobody left who can stop her now. The princess's great power will cause destruction the likes of which you can only begin to imagine. Fufufufu.

It's a little difficult to tell, but there goes Kumiko's soul.

Aaaand there go the seals.

: Now my organization's goal has been achieved. All these foolish humans will be destroyed and left for dead, fufufufu. But before that, I will put an end to these matters between us. You may not truly be Kyouji Kuzunoha, but you are still a Devil Summoner. I have my pride as a Dark Summoner and cannot forsake it for any reason!
: The body of Kyouji Kuzunoha and the soul of Naoto Shibata, this is where you will meet your end.

drat, son! Have you been hitting the gym while planning to murder an entire city? Were you gonna destroy the place with your pecs if this plan didn't work out? Get real beefy, bitch.

:siren: BOSS #23 - SID DAVIS (3RD BATTLE)

VS Fiend Sid

Despite his newfound muscles, Sid is still incredibly weak. The only thing that's really changed between this fight and the last one is that he now has 300 more HP. No new moves, a bit of increase in power, and that's it. Maybe he should've been training his mind instead of his body.

: ...T-To come this f-far...Making it here shows...how strong you've grown...Kuzunoha...no, Naoto Shibata...
: ...But you're wasting your strength......You're powerless...against the reincarnated Princess Inaruna...

INARUNA: ...I will not forgive them...I have never forgotten...The vile treatment against me and my nation...My resentment did not fade, even when they sealed me away...I cannot use my full power here...But you shall know the true depth of my anger.

:siren: BOSS #24 - INARUNA (1ST FORM)

VS Inaruna

I always thought that Inaruna's design was reminiscent of Lilith due to the snake-like appendages wrapped around her body. I guess she didn't have any clothes handy when she reincarnated, so she just grabbed the next best thing.

Inaruna's got the same HP as Sid, but both her power and moveset are much better than his. She can cause some real damage with her regular attack, and I'd go so far as to call it her most dangerous move. It can hit up to 5 times and, if you're unlucky, can hit the same person multiple times and kill them rather quickly.

She's got some standard magic to start with: Absolute Zero and Thunder Break.

She also has two exclusive moves. First is Miss Cold Heart, a physical attack that Yoshitsune and I send right back at her. Her second one, Fiore Splendido, is similar to Megidola but can hit all enemies.

Most MegaTen games are satisfied with two back-to-back battles at the end of the game, but not Devil Summoner! With no stops in between, it's time for the third and final battle.

BGM: Last Battle

It might not be the epic final battle music you usually hear in video games, but it's a nice, jazzy little number.

:siren: BOSS #25 - INARUNA (2ND FORM)

VS Inaruna

Inaruna's second form pulls out all the stops. Her regular attack, while more powerful than her first form's, is actually less deadly because it hits everybody only once instead of multiple times. All of her stats took a major jump from the first form - her defense, for example, leapt from 210 to 266, and her HP doubled to a high 5000.

To start with, she can inflict some nasty ailments that could potentially ruin your day. Spite Shout can cause Paralysis while Crying Scream can cause either Stone or Charm. Both can ruin your day, as Spite Shout sends you scrambling to waste your turns healing Paralysis while Crying Scream can charm your strongest fighter or (worse yet) completely stop you dead in your tracks if both the protag and Rei get inflicted with Stone.

In offense, she has Megidolaon and Genocide Fist. Megidolaon is the strongest Almighty attack that hits everybody, and Genocide Fist is an Inaruna-exlusive move which damages the slowest party member.

Lastly, she has the buff and debuff dispelling moves Dekaja and Dekunda. Having somebody constantly using either buffs or debuffs is a pretty good strategy, as you can then have her waste a turn casting Dekaja or Dekunda.

BGM: Cornered

And the sun rises.

INARUNA: ...What have I been doing? It seems an evil force caused me to become consumed by the hatred that had been sealed away long ago. You have returned me to sanity. My thoughts exceeded my karma, but I have been freed. I must say thank you. The one who is dwelling in the body of Kyouji Kuzunoha, Naoto Shibata...

: ...What was I doing just now...?

: You saved me, didn't you? Thank you...Naoto. You really are alive, but I guess you have to continue to live as Kyouji Kuzunoha. I won't say "goodbye," though. Instead, I'll say "until we meet again."

Ah, Kumiko is such a nice girl. We can still make it work, baby! I'm still the same guy on the inside!

: Hey, you finished with the sobfest? Charon'd rather see me dead, but too bad for him. I saw what you were fighting right now, so I can't keep my mouth shut.
: I'm stuck in this punk for now, but when somebody better rolls around then I'll be taking their body. You can just keep being a Devil Summoner, like you have been. Of course, if you screw up then I'm sending you straight back to Avici.
: Just keep doing what you can. Later.

Y'know, Kyouji, you might have been a total dick who dragged me into this whole mess in the first place, but I still like you. Good luck, buddy.

: We did it...Kyouji...

: You may not really be Kyouji, but you're a Devil Summoner worthy of the Kuzunoha title. Still, since you aren't really Kyouji...

: What do you want me to call you?

Kyouji Kuzunoha
>Naoto Shibata

I've had a good time running around as Kyouji Kuzunoha, but I think it's time for me to really be me. You can call me by my real name.

: ...Naoto Shibata...The Devil Summoner Naoto Shibata. I'm your partner, Rei Reiho. Let's start fresh from here.

>Thus the great destruction that threatened Hirasaki City was prevented and a new Devil Summoner was born.

MUSIC: And, Night Dawns... (Staff Roll)

Even if you don't normally watch videos, I recommend checking out the credits because there's little FMV clips that aren't anywhere except the credits and you can see some FMV clips that I didn't make into GIFs. If you don't watch the vid, I implore you to at least listen to the Staff Roll theme because it is my absolute, number one favorite ending theme from all of MegaTen.

Well, we're done with the story, but not done with the game quite yet. I hope you've enjoyed it as much as I have, and see you next update for one last dungeon.

For anybody who has never played the game or knew the story (so I'm guessing basically everybody), I'd love to know your opinions or thoughts about the game now that's it's basically over. Like a lot of games that are the first in their series, it stumbles a bit in places, but I think it succeeds in the areas of design, music, and atmosphere. One of the extra updates I'm planning is a full review of the game, so I'll discuss it more when I post that.

Well that escalated and then rapidly descalated quickly.
Usually when a FMV pans out and giant explosion happens over a City in an SMT game it means you reached the half point and poo poo is going to get real. But it just...poofs out here.
Yeah this game has pacing issues, and the Avici section was just blatant padding in retrospect.

The ending is really weak, it even ends on a "okay everything's good now" sentence. Sid's whole thing was, I feel, rather poorly done and cliche. I would've liked to see more of Inaruna and how her grudge affected the city, but she's just kinda there and then gone.

I like the Devil Summoner sub-series in general, so as a starting point I thought it was fine. As a narrative the later games are better, but it's like SMT1 and 2 in comparison to Nocturne or Strange Journey. At the time it was an (overdue) step away from stories about apocalypses.

I enjoyed it, but I'm a sucker for these. (I replayed Soul Hackers to get a better ending.)

Is there any lore about Inaruna? I don't think I've heard of her, before, and I'm curious.

I agree with the comments about pacing issues; in later games, they ramp up the severity more consistently, and you usually have an idea of what the real stakes are by the time you enter the final dungeon.

Devil Summoner my favorite sub-series, so I am kinda biased towards it in general.

I don't know if I ever mentioned it, but this is also the first MegaTen game that's not set in post-apocalyptic Japan, so it was a big change of pace from earlier titles.

(No shame in that, Soul Hackers is such a great game)

Inaruna is original to this game. Since Azuma's thesis is based off of Yamatai-koku, it's possible that Inaruna was based off of the shaman queen Himiko, but I don't actually have any proof of that.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if people came into the ancient tomb not even realizing it's the final dungeon, it really is kinda anti-climatic.

The ending dialogue, existence of the weird TV drama, etc, makes me wonder if they were originally planning to continue the Devil Summoner series with "Kyouji Kuzunoha" et al. instead of making Soul Hackers.

Now I have a machine gun. Ho! Ho! Ho!
I've always enjoyed the Devil Summoner series (this one being the only one I've never played, which reminds me, I know it's a bit premature, but I've really enjoyed the LP here) but I end up liking some of the other SMT series a little better. I think it's because I always find the DS series' stories to be a bit lacking and a little boring (the creativity is amazing, I'm referring to the flow of the main story). I actually really enjoyed the Raidou DS games for their battle system and was hoping to see more of that in the future.

I think the dungeons would drive me nuts in this game. I don't mind the first-person view, but I remember I used to have a lot of trouble with similar mazes (pits, warps, etc.) in other games like SMT2 and Strange Journey, and while I liked them back when I played them, I simply no longer have the patience for their gimmicks. Overall, I'd say this is a game I'd definitely give a whirl if I had the chance.

edit: I too was wondering about any lore on Inarune.

Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying it!

I know that somebody's working on a translation patch for the PSP version for the game, which fixes quite a number of the complaints I have about the Saturn version, so hopefully you'll actually get to play it one day.

I think a problem with Inaruna is that she's only fully introduced right at the end, so it's very likely that a lot of people don't connect her with Azuma's theories and realize that she's the princess from ancient Japan who was tortured before being executed, because that happened waaaay back near the beginning of the game and isn't brought up again. There was a novel written about Inaruna when she was alive and the events leading up to her execution, but I'm unsure how canon that is, so basically all the information we get about her comes from the game.

It seems like there was a lot more game left. Like, this is the apocalypse that every SMT is bracketed around, except the apocalypse happens and eh, wasn't really that bad.

I won this avatar on a technicality this thick.
That was a very basic game with not much payoff. Amusingly, they kept to the title of having a goddess resurrected. I am curious about the organization that Sid mentioned; does that come back in Soul Hackers?

The secret society Sid mentions acts as the main antagonist(s) in Soul Hackers. It's called the Phantom Society/Collective (depending on translation), and they're the age-old evil rivals of the Kuzunohas

It's never stated outright, but yeah, this is most likely true. And if you can, I heartily recommend playing Soul Hackers.

I like a lot of the little things about the game's story, but it is weak overall. I love the soldiers at Casa Inui, because they're duty-bound soldiers who are just pissed that their sacred burial ground has been desecrated and turned into apartments, and I love the ghost trio in the television station because they all came together not for some nefarious plot but because they just found each other. What Atlus seemed to have a problem with was tying this all together into one coherent narrative and having Sid be more of a constant. In Soul Hackers, for example, most of the dungeons and bosses have, in one way or another, something to do with the main enemies of the game and so their presence is felt throughout. In this game there are quite a number of dungeons which do something interesting but ultimately do not add to the plot.
