I have a problem with the way the OP defines middle class because it is not about income but about your relationship to capital. If you make $75k a year but have no assets you are not middle class.

The middle class ideal of everyone owning (or paying a mortgage) on a 1.5 acre lot was never much of a real asset. The whole concept was a 'third way' to avoid/stymie Marxian class conflict.

Could be (signficant) savings or investments. And while the US is big the fact that there is cheap land in Montana doesn't really drive down prices in San Fransisco or NYC.

Cities have unique real estate markets because they have lots of vertical space which one owner cannot use and must be rented. If anything there is a huge problem of unused space in cities. We could guarantee housing for everyone. The suburban real estate / property tax concept is dying, I doubt Millennials can/will buy into it the way the boomers did. We need Social Anarchy.

argument that the middle class isn't actually important spins into endorsement of a facile and illusory ideology, didn't see that coming

They want to flip it and move - I've argued for renting it out. The idea of everyone owning/mortgaging a residential lot was a big factor in the 2008 crash. Not to mention whitey hand-wringing about the neighbors and property values.

a residential house you live in is not productive property in a marxist sense

McDowell posted:They want to flip it and move - I've argued for renting it out. this is a gross oversimplification of what happened, not to mention it's irrelevant since advocacy for the middle class is not dependent on the idea of every household owning land, much less a piece of land that they personally want.

that elysium movie is bad but it is also prophetic in the future the wealthy will live in a few beautiful, heavily gaurded spots on earth while the rest of us starve outside the gates Automation of middle class jobs, which is already happening, is another step on the path to destruction. Automation of the police and military will mean the 1% finally has a way to beat the only advantage we have over them -- our numbers. Some police are arguably still human and could be persuaded to fight their masters if things get bad enough, but that won't matter when we replace that cop with a drone. I would recommend suicide now to avoid getting raped and eaten in the job apocalypse.
