To be fair many of those societies you quoted authors from did crumble within a couple generations. Simply because it's a common sentiment doesn't necessarily make it wrong, it could be a cyclic issue.

That's true, but I don't think that "kids being silly" is necessarily a major factor in social collapse. In fact trying to keep kids on the straight and narrow has often led to more problems than it solved (e.g. "Go fight in the war! Getting horribly wounded and watching your friends die builds character!")

Industrial Revolution did it earlier. Once a majority of young children started going to school instead of contributing to the household economy, there was a big shift in how we viewed children and childhood. Really every major technological advance "substantially changed" society in some way.

Yeah don't get me wrong I mostly agree with you I just felt like there was a bit more nuance and caveats to the issue than your pithy quotes suggested.

Yeah, you're right. It's pretty rare for things to be simple. I just hope I'll have enough insight to not get all mad at young whippersnappers for their mindcasts and their genemods and their hyperporn when I reach old age myself

does it make you guys feel old as gently caress to just parrot the same poo poo people have been saying for 100k years?

or does it make you feel like you're in good company?

or is it just a complete lack of any self awareness?

Yeah we're in for a real shitshow with how people are so held down by technology and media. What would happen to all these people if they didn't have videogames/music/internet for a week? Literally whole towns would be smearing poo poo on their walls and lighting things on fire. So many people are loving mentally disabled by this stuff that they don't know how to live with themselves
