Yeah lots of money in trading seal blubber in the modern globalized economy. They're poor because hunting and gathering is fine to live off of at a subsistence level, but it doesn't compete with agriculture let alone industrialized society.

lots of other arctic aboriginal peoples living in their ancient lands aren't poor. the sami for example

it's basically that white imperialists stole their lands, forced them into reservations and mistreated them for decades. now they're dirt poor yet the goverment won't give them rights to their ancient lands despite them still living there.

see how the norwegians and swedes have treated their sami minorities. they've done the least all goverments should do.

The indigenous Sami population is a mostly urbanised demographic. They realized that herding reindeer is less profitable than selling mineral and oil rights and moving into the cities and towns of Norway.

there's still arctic aborigines living like that. the reason the peoples living in canada aren't is the slow genocide the goverment has been committing.

that's only part of the story since there's sami people in sweden, finland and russia as well but can you tell me the reason the canadian aborigines aren't doing the same?

because their right to their land was taken away and they were forced into reservations.

They were poor before colonialism! They had skins, and antlers and bones. That was all they needed. They still have those things.

They live in an area that cannot support agriculture or industry, so of course they survive on a primitive level of development.

The numbered treaties are important to natives but the Indian act is what actually has control over them, and it was never negotiated or accepted by natives, just done to them explicitly to dispossess and assimilate them. And their recommendations to fix its most egregious violations of treaties and human decency have been ignored for like 50 years.

Bag Smokes are pretty funny. Because tobacco is sacred to natives, there's no regulation. As a result, there's a massive industry of manufacturing cigarettes.

A pack of 200 costs $10.

http://www.durhamregion.com/news-story/5160899-clearing-the-smoke-surrounding-first-nations-cigarettes/

quote:

Cheap smokes make it hard to quit the habit and there's a financial cost to governments as well. The federal and provincial governments lose $2 billion a year in tax revenue when people buy tax-free native cigarettes.

quote:

Senator Hugh Segal, an outspoken critic of contraband tobacco, maintains the police are afraid to enter native reserves and arrest the ringleaders because they fear a repeat of the Oka crisis from 20 years ago. Back then, violence erupted when the Quebec police and later the Army went onto the Kanestake reserve to enforce a municipal bylaw. Subsequent confrontations across Canada have led to blockades and violence. He believes that it's a situation Ottawa and the provinces want to avoid.

Sorry Canada, but when the Trumpfschluss comes, you're going to have to be willing to see these territories rolled into Greater Alaska. The maritime provinces will probably have to be combined, but the rest of you will be given statehood in order to legitimize our peacekeeping mission to protect the ethnic North Americans from the reckless immigration policies of your government.

Mineral rights in the extreme north are worth the paper they're printed on currently. How could you possibly set up a work camp in a place where gasoline freezes and is a 1/4 of the earth from any major airport? Did you guys see those electricity and shipping mark ups? Maybe in 50 years once climate change has done it's thing, if those resources are still valuable.

When I was a kid my cousin and her friends drove a three-wheeler out into the woods, popped open the gas tank, and took turns huffing the fumes. They were busted when one of the friends chickened out and wound up snitching. Unbeknownst to my father this worked it's way back through the family grapevine to me.

The next time we went over to the huffers' house he pulled me aside and gave me a "If they start doing something you know is wrong, don't do it" speech as a way to warn me, I guess. Thanks for the direct approach, Dad.

Surprise, surprise - the cousin is still living on the rez and a total waste of life.
