Seriously, unless you have some bizarrely specific story to tell and it happened only last week and you accidentally killed a man while escaping, I doubt you have anything to worry about.

Well, this was like 8-10 years so I should be fine. I worked at a bookstore in college and they paid like poo poo, so I rationalized it was okay to steal. I probably stole $4-5K when I worked there. Small stuff like candy bars and school supplies could just be put in your pocket. I was a well respected employee so no one would think I was stealing poo poo. I would steal a lot of batteries which I could use or sell. And I drank 5 hour energies from the stock room in the back all the time, as far as I could tell, inventory was never done, so they had no idea they were low on stuff. For bigger items like books and clothing, I would utilize my winter coat. Coats were kept in the back so when no one was around I would hide things near my coat and then I would make sure no one was around when I grabbed my coat to leave and would shove the stuff in there, and just walk out with my coat over my arm. I also got a very nice discount on clothing, so I would use it to buy Under Armour items and resell to my friends at a lower cost than the store charged but higher than I paid. Sometimes I would also ring up a return for a $50 or so book when no one was around, pocket the money, and just say I forgot to staple the original receipt to the refund slip. People forgot to do this all the time (perhaps they were stealing too?) so no one really minded if I did it once or twice a year. I feel bad for it now, and it was really dumb, but like I said, I rationalized it by the lovely pay I received.

poo poo, I just remembered that when I first moved out on my own, my friend got a job at a mini-mart/gas station that wasn't open 24 hours. We'd get stoned late at night and he'd use his key for the place to get in and we'd fill up 44oz soda cups with nacho cheese sauce to take back home and go to town on with tortilla chips. Not really shoplifting but holy poo poo that was brazen and idiotic.

luncheon meat posted:I like following the local police on facebook and seeing the CCTV shots of people who look like junkies or just incredibly loving dumb stealing poo poo like bourbon not realising pretty much every single loving store worth stealing from has cameras now The key to defeating the cameras is to just look like you're on your normal business. For example when I stole a chocolate bar a couple nights ago I was doing regular shopping, happened to notice they had put a stack of boxes in front of the chocolate (thus obscuring the camera), so I pretended to look at a couple and put them back before going on my way - except I palmed one instead of putting it back (if you're good at this you don't even need a stack of boxes to obscure the view) and slipped it into my pocket a few moments later when I went to pull my phone out (to look at my shopping list). tbh it sounds like their own dumbass fault for not doing inventory or keeping track of the register/till and the returns being done. what store doesn't do inventory? My first job was at a grocery store that had an emergency door with the alarm disabled. I'd literally just load up a cart and go out the door. Later my best friend got fired for not having a receipt for a pack of batteries he brought from home, chump.

Walmart's inventory system is garbage plus they decided to cut a bunch of dept. manager positions so the inventory gets all hosed up before you even factor in shrink.

Back in 2001, a guy I knew from high school shoplifted an XBox. Manager was so impressed that he was allowed to keep it.

There used to be a music store in the mall called Camelot when I was a kid. My cousin and I found out that the sections of wall underneath all of the cassettes were actually drawers full of tapes that weren't in the locked plastic things. We would go in wearing cowboy boots and put cassettes from those drawers in our boots and walk out.

My buddy worked at a gas station and late nights would let my pal and I steal all kinds of poo poo so long as we avoided the cameras. Which meant standing at the end of the racks running the length of the interior while stuffing tall boys and deli sandwiches down our pants. Buddy even had a system for stealing cigarettes which meant crouching down and pulling individual packs out of the cartons, just out of the cameras view. This went on for a few months until the manager decided to do inventory and noticed things were significantly not how they should be. Supposedly a corporate rep was going to come oversee the station and sort out the issue but no-one was ever blamed and buddy continued working there until he moved.

Worked at Compusa from 2003-2004. We had nearly every controller demo stolen at one point or another. Our most embarassing was someone stole 10 terabytes worth of hard drives, 40-80gigs at a time. Our loss prevention guy comes over and notices that every single hard drive box is open and empty. Also people used to steal CDs and laptop bags all the time.

SCO (self check out) machines save alot on labour costs. In aus a checkout operator costs 20-25 or so dollars an hour. 10 SCOs save $200 an hour as well as keeping customers flowing through so they dont get fed up with you shop and go shop somewhere else next time. In the end its probably a break even with the additional theft.
