So.... I sent an email about this 12 days ago, but nothing has happened yet despite me getting a reponse the same day saying that it would.
My followup emails seems to have been ignored.

On the awful jam page, it would be nice if the rules could include some terms for how IP rights for submissions are handled (gamejams tend to do this). Example:
"Your game belongs to you. Awful Jams, its organizers and affiliates claim no rights or ownership of your game."

(based on the IP rights info from ludum dare, section ownership)
http://ludumdare.com/compo/rules/

I basically need something like this in place for me to be able to participate, for reasons I can't talk too much about.

I know a few big studios around Dallas don't allow their employees to participate in game jams period.

Yeah, I don't want to talk about specifics, but things like that seems common, not just in game studios.

Having an IP rights information like that is pretty much standard, and may seem unneccessary to some people, but it will make it a lot easier for some people (like me) to participate.

Not sure how this would be a meta-commentary on gamejams, since it's probably quite unusual to roll your own engine for gamejams, and using WIP engines seems sortof awkward.

That said, to set your expectations, I wont spend too much time on this jam, since I'm on parental leave. Will mostly code during late nights and baby naps.

Should have a WIP/prototype of whatever the chosen theme is within a few days after the jam starting, and will send you a message then if you want to contribute,

Making the penguin more sad is definitely something that should be put in there.

And yeah, the waves arent too interesting. Trying to tweak it to make it a bit better. Glad you liked it.

Voice over is not really doable in pico8, but there should be a SFX there, unless i uploaded a too early version.

Quick impressions from the stuff I've played

Cryolancer - Looks great, sounds great, plays good! Freezing large ships and dropping them on other ships is a fun gimmick. Hitbox on ship feels a bit too big though.
Kesha Was Bird - Awesome Octo graphics, and nice sounds! Some neat effects as well. I actually really liked this game until I got stuck after getting the code.
Catfishin' and Chill - Love the easy to hard mode transition. Amazing art. Controls in hard mode feels a bit wonky.
Awful Darts - Looks great. Not very fun to play :(
Lee The Chill Chinchilla - I dunno, gameplay was alright for what it was I guess, but not much game in there.
Chateau de Feu - This might be my favorite. Nice puzzles, and a hard but fair boss battle.
Zamboni - Good intro. Not very fun to play :( Ending was dissapointing. Was hoping for something similar to intro quality
Gardening Grandmas 4: Chili Cook Off - My rock + watering can chili was not a hit with the judges :(
Llama goes to Market : I liked this a lot. The haggling section felt a lot like the game Shatter, which I love. Could have had a better ending
Polar Adventure - Fun and nice looking choose your own adventure thing. finally got the best ending, and it was very chill. worth the time spent
Death is Eternal - Looks good, sounds good, super broken collisions.

Congrats to all the winners!

I will say though, that I feel that Murder, Death, Chill should have been able to take the best use of theme prize.

It uses the theme in at least three ways ("typographically", themed around cold stuff, themed around making things chill), not including lovely puns!

#Everest had so much effort put into it though that it definitely deserved it as well, so it's hard to be too sad about this or anything :)

Murder, Death, Chill

https://vimeo.com/155266661

I recorded this one at the same time as the rest of 'em, but then I got really busy and forgot about it. I watched it again about six hours ago, and here's what I remember:
  • Memorable aesthetic. It's very clear and inescapable that I'm in a chill situation.
  • Tight gameplay, which isn't to say good gameplay. There wasn't a lot going on mechanically, but you knew it and worked around it. The game was so short and intense that its simplicity did not matter one whit.
  • Pun driven development. When humanity returns to the tops of trees, gigantic implacable redwoods, and the pinnacle of our technology has regressed to ziplines, oral history will remember pun driven development as the one true enlightenment of our silver years.
  • Continue puts you right back where you left off. This is a huge deal. For normal games of skill this might be a turn-off, but you had a point to make and it was incredibly wise that you ensured you had the chance to make it.
  • Scope in general. You knew you were a game jam game. I knew I was playing a game jam game. I got my chuckles in, and I left with a smile on my mouth and a sensation of (limited) time well spent.
  • Patera Silk is a baller.

Haha, nice. I just watched the video and the reactions to the game was fun to see :)
"Good game, adequate length" is basically everything I hoped the game to be.

Regarding the gameplay, yeah it's honestly quite a bit lacking. I threw together an early prototype pretty quickly, which was sortof so-so, and then had to decide if I was going to commit to it, or make something else. Decided to just go with it, and ended up with this game. The limited ways to spawn enemies with the current system doesn't really make for much variety, but since I was going for a short experience, it came out alright.

Continues only giving a minor setback (rounds down to last 10%) was a good decision. I knew that I did not want to make a game that's hard to complete. At first, restarts started off from the beginning, and the "Chill mode" on the main screen was introduced (where deaths just count up, but you can't take damage), but I realized that just having a continue where you can keep going with only a minor setback seemed like a better way of making the game easy to complete.

After all, this is a game-jam game, and I don't expect people to put that much time into it :) Very happy with how it came out. Should write up a proper postmortem at some point.

A TL;DR postmortem would say:

Good:
- People generally seem to like the game
- Won a bunch of bounties (three i think?)
- Pizza made great music

Bad:
- Did not make top-10 nomination list

Lessons learned:
- Don't forget to add JonTerp in post-credit judge pandering.
