Title says it all. Mere samples in a hip hop track don't count, vice versa may.

PLEASE DO NOT POST MORE THAN ONE OR TWO YOUTUBES IN YOUR POST
~Some of us have lovely old computers that can't handle 80 youtubes on one page.~

Example: Norwegian Röykssop made a fantastic track with Swedish Karin Dreijer Andersson, What Else is There. This was remixed by Danish Trentemøller, making it a pan-scandinavian. Trentemøller's remix was then remixed by Andi Müller and became this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_iDeYcMMTk

Another example: New Order's 1983 song Confusion in its Pump Panel Reconstruction Mix – the only part I recognize is the chorus that slips into the background once in a while:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qF8-DrGAOw8

A final example: The Beatniks – Stairway to Heaven (in the style of 1960s Beatles)

What's the term for when an artist covers a song, and keeps the tune the same but changes the lyrics and genre? I don't think it's sampling, since that's usually just for one part of an otherwise original piece.

I dunno what that is called. The Wu Tang track is definitely within this the aim of the thread (changing the gender of the singer, etc), but Busta's Iron Man version seems more like just a "standard" hip hop sample that they got Ozzy to sing along on. Eh, whatever, it's all good.

But you're probably thinking like Obadiah Parker's Hey Ya cover right? Another good example for this thread:

Also the 90s craze of poppish numetal covers of 80s pop songs. Of course there was Alien Ant Farm's version of MJs Smooth Criminal, but the one I think started the craze:

Does this count for the thread? The themesong to the early 2000s anime The Big O is shamelessly stolen from a cover of the themesong to the 1980 Flash Gordon movie.

My favorite strange cover of all time:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AVykXVL_xw

Go ahead, try and guess what song it's a cover of

It's a cover of Elvis Presley's Suspicious Minds played backwards (hence all the Elvis wigs in the video), including the same lyrics: the Italian lyrics are a phonetic approximation of the original backwards English (sometimes really close, compare this part with the original), and not only they're grammatically correct and not just gibberish, they even mostly make sense. Elio e le Storie Tese are famous for their absurd humorous lyrics, so almost nobody noticed at first. They're also a legit badass act, and probably the only band in Italy that could pull it

Most retro gamers know the theme to Doctor Wily's Castle theme. Fast and beep-boopy, right?

One of the few OCRemix mp3s I still have in my collection is Tickle My Wily, a remix that turns it into a slow-paced, sweeping piano theme that has some beep-boopy stuff in the background, but it's almost changed into a different song for me, mentally.

They played a concert locally where they did it accoustic, and it sounds like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=212dgo6G7PE . Almost a totally different song. If we're doing semi-ironic cultural appropriation stuff, Jonathan Coulton's enfolked Baby Got Back cover was so well recieved among the nerderati that Glee outright stole his arrangement to perform on the show and even used his version as their backing track credit-free. There was some minor twitter drama. And then everyone realized that nobody cared and the world moved on.

And I've got some bluegrass Who for your banjo fun too.
