Oberleutnant posted:improvements to the cardiovascular system only start happening once you maintain a certain minimal heart rate for a certain minimal time. I think it's usually in the 70% range for a minimum of 12 minutes or so. Once you have a certain level of physical fitness endurance sports make a lot of use of training that demands you stay within very specific heart rate ranges to produce optimal improvements for the effort expended. Nobody ever was able to achieve this before Fitbit.

Peta posted:Nobody ever was able to achieve this before Fitbit. I wasn't advocating anybody buy a fitbit, I was answering the question of why you would need to monitor your heart rate. And before computerised heart rate monitors people still trained by heart rate, they just did it by manually taking their pulse during training and then maintaining long, tedious logs. It's a very useful training tool, which is why literally every endurance sport uses a lot of training by heart rate.

I have one as do about 20 acquaintances and friends. It's fun to compete as it gets you up and moving when you might ordinariky sit around. It's also my alarm clock, and vibrates me awake at 5 without waking up the wife. Combined with myfitnesspal, it's helped me lose 40 lbs since june.

Oberleutnant posted:You need to do exactly this if you want to be a competitive athlete because your training has to maximise performance output while minimising energy input, and at elite level nothing is left to chance - minuscule percentile differences in peformance can make the difference between an olympic gold medal or no medal at all. Even amateur, recreational and locally competitive athletes will benefit by making the best possible use of their limited training time. No one ever became an Olympic athlete because they bought a Fitbit. In fact I hate to break it to you but if someone got you a Fitbit for Christmas then it's not because they thought you were Olympic-level athlete.

No one ever became an olympic athlete without a coach. The fitbit performs some of a coach's functions (workout tracking, motivation) since we don't have the means or ability to have a coach.

Peta posted:"If you wanna be able to run an 18-minute 5K then you'd better either buy a Fitbit or manually log cardiovascular data from all your workouts." hey you could also buy a garmin or something. no big deal. but no, nobody said you literally can't run an 18:00 5k without a heart rate monitor, but your training will be considerably easier and more consistent if you can objectively track your progress rather than just doing it by feeling. No need to get bent out of shape, big guy.
