The deal with the knight shield is that it's not bad per se, but that it's really heavy for what you get out of it, so you've got a lot of shield options that are just straight up better, like you saw. It's one of the things you'll look for if you do a lot of lower level invasions, actually, knight shield/drake sword (and maybe a fang boar helm) combo often means that the person you've invaded has no idea what they're doing.

That's why I said the fang boar helm is a maybe :v:

That said, if they've got all 3 they either have no idea what they're doing or they just want you to think that, and then they parry you and pull out a +15 bandit's knife for the riposte.

I tend to prefer the kite shields that Andre sells to the other "I plan to actually block a bunch with this" options reasonably available at this point in the game. For just one weight unit more than the heater shield you get 3-4 more stability and the same resists.

Yeah, the kite shields are good. I like to try to pick up a balder shield around this point, it's got pretty good stability and looks awesome to boot. Only problem is you have to farm a bit for it, but I usually wind up doing a little of that anyway to buy shards so it winds up not being too big a deal.

Balder shield starts with much better stability, but doesn't upgrade as well and has worse non-physical resists. Plus you know what happens if you try and farm for one on a non-dex character: 10 Balder Side Swords.

According to the wiki it's better stability-wise than the kite shields all the way to +15, for only an extra pound of weight. You're right about the resists though, it's got 10% less magic and fire resist than the kite shields.

Casting TWoP with that sword probably costs 50 durability, that's the usual durability cost for items with special attacks like that.

I don't know if you're going to talk about this in later Depths videos, but there are actually 3 different types of rats in the Depths. There are the medium size rats, which you've seen, and which have the AI that you talked about in the video, giant rats, which are very aggressive, and small rats, which will just try to run away from you and don't attack you.

Yeah, they just kinda scurry off and disappear into the walls but trying to chase them can get you in trouble if you're not careful.

Blighttown is the loving best. Learn to love it, make it your home, and use it's misery as your ally.

You know what's worse than Blighttown? Being invaded in Blighttown.

Sack. Great Club. Plank Shield. Hollow soldier waistcloth, Steel and Wolf rings. (Dung and Charcoal Pine Resin just to be extra terrifying. The Great Club engulfed in flames is a sight to behold). Doesn't matter that it's an extremely suboptimal build, the range and push of the greatclub will terrify your opponents, and the Two-handed R2 will straight up flatten people unless they've got a greatshield. More often than not your opponent just dodge roll off a ledge. Honestly, I'm sub-average when it comes to DS PvP, but I loving shine in Blighttown.

I spent so much time invading in Blightttown I learned pretty much every nook and cranny. It's much less complicated than people think, and I learned to love it. This was back on 360 when the BB glitch was still in full effect, so I had access to almost the entire inventory of the game from my previous character. If I saw some poor schmuck flailing around in a Boar Helm and knight armor I'd usually drop them a better sword or shield before attacking, and more often than not they'd summon me as a sunbro afterwards and I'd escort them through the worst of it.

I did some blighttown invasions as well, mainly using a guy I'd built as a gimmick who had all the Force Miracles, and would try to just knock people off the ledges with them. It was great fun, and I also know my way around upper blighttown pretty well now from doing that.

I love that Dark Souls presents challenges that can be completely sidestepped with foreknowledge, like kicking Lautrec off a cliff or getting That One Ring for Blighttown.

Also challenges with little explicitly significant reward, like restoring the Keeper's voice, or saving Solaire and half the other NPCs from going hollow. The main reason to save them is personal.

Eh, you can get a slab out of saving siegmeyer, that's pretty significant imo

Another fun Quelaag fact, that attack you died to on your first attempt does magic damage, not fire damage like the rest of her attacks do. Also, the zweihander r2 overhead smash attack is another weapon that can hit her human body to stagger her. I think the great scythe has an attack that can do it too.

The Gargoyles took me like 4 tries (I got lost and went to their location before Andre's bonfire)

I am one-shotting Balder Knights. This is awesome!

Just make sure you find something to replace it soon, the drake sword is really good right up until it's not anymore, and then it's practically useless, and the point where it's useless isn't that far into the game

Even if you find enough scales, which is annoying as hell, upgrades start at 10000 Souls each and only get more costly. It's an object lesson in diminishing returns

IIRC the upgrade cost doesn't increase, but there's only like 10 scales to be found in the game unless you want to farm drakes for them, which is a giant pain in the butt. So yeah, like someone else said, you could do that but it's really not worth it compared to the plethora of other options you get at basically every point in the game.

E: where even are all the dragon scales? The only ones I can think of that are guaranteed at the moment are the two hydras and the one in the blighttown arena. And maybe one in the duke's archives? Not sure about that though.

Double edit: oh and there's the two undead dragons, I forgot about them

If you time it right, it is possible to get up the boulder ramp without taking one to the face. It's very difficult, though.

One thing you forgot to show off with that final arrow trap is that it actually has two pressure plate triggers, and that if you trigger it going towards the snake mage, the second trigger pops up and you can trigger it again when you go back towards the outside, only this time the arrows are coming from behind you.

Painted world is easily my favorite area of the game. It's so flavorful and tightly designed. Also, you don't strictly need a fire weapon here for those upcoming enemies, anything with enough reach that you can stay out of their spray will work well too. The rapier or spear work quite well for this, and any of the halberd-type weapons should also do nicely.
