Are you a person? Do you like to win completely meaningless prizes? Can you type the letters A-D and F over and over again? Then you, too, are eligible to participate in a contest statistically little different than a random lottery! As part of the review thread, we readers guess what grade each episode will receive and then complain bitterly about Toxx's taste when we inevitably get it wrong.

Here are the rules, in no particular order:

  • The episode list for the purposes of this contest starts with the first episode of Season Nine ("The Magician's Apprentice") and ends with the most recent Christmas special.
  • Send all your guesses via e-mail to my SA username @gmail.com or via PM on SA itself or via any other means of contact you happen to have for me. The best format is your SA username on the first line and one vote per line thereafter, but I'm not too picky. The subject of every mail or PM should include the phrase "Season Nine Guessing Game" so I can keep track of them.
  • One vote per person per episode. You cannot change your votes for any episode once you've sent them to me.
  • Each vote has to be a letter grade, A-D or F, no half-step grades or other cutesy stuff.
  • You get one point for every step by which your grade differs from the one Toxx assigns in either direction. So if he says C and you said B, you get one point, and if he said A and you said F, you get four.
  • Whoever gets the lowest point value at the end of the season wins a prize of some kind, which I will eventually remember to give them!
  • :ducksiren: You can vote on each episode at any point before the review comes out :ducksiren:, which means you can watch along with the reviews (or at least a little bit in advance). In other words, you don't have to send me the full list right away, as long as you vote for the episode at some point before it gets reviewed.
  • If you don't get a vote in on any episode, you will automatically get four points for that episode even if that would otherwise be impossible. Obviously, Toxx is under no obligation to inform anyone in advance when he's doing reviews, so it's to your advantage to get your votes in as early as you feel able. This also means that you can enter the contest late, you will just get four points for any episodes already reviewed.

If you don't see your name there, either you haven't signed up yet, your entry got spamfiltered, or I was an idiot and didn't put you into the spreadsheet. If you haven't signed up and want to, given that the first review is likely to come in tomorrow according to Toxx's OP, you probably want to get your first guess in pretty soon. (Remember, all you need to do to participate is send me one letter grade for the first episode of the season.) If you signed up and are not on the list, please let me know so I can correct things.

Thanks, and good luck!

The Witch's Familiar

Let's be real. It was always going to be a trick. Davros was always going to be tricking the Doctor and the Doctor was always going to be tricking him. No other outcome was possible, given the structure of the show and the people running it.

But imagine. Imagine if it weren't. Imagine if it really were just about an evil old man calling up his greatest enemy to have a chat with him before he died. I wanted that episode.

Anyway, this one was still pretty okay.

Before the Flood

The Bootstrap Paradox, or as I am more generally familiar with it, the Ontological Paradox, is one of my favorite little things about time travel stories. It compresses the entire thing into a neat little self-referencing lump. It's also one of the main reasons that time travel as depicted in shows like Doctor Who can't exist in real life. (The entire point of any paradox is to point out that something about the setup is logically inconsistent and therefore must be false.) Much as I like Capaldi, I did not need him to smugly point this out to me even as an excuse to have him play the guitar more. As Toxx has pointed out, Doctor Who generates ontological paradoxes only slightly less frequently than rubber-mask aliens, but even apart from that, on a very basic level: if you want to point out that something in your story is weird, HAVE THE loving STORY POINT THAT OUT. DO NOT HAVE A CHARACTER LITERALLY TALK TO THE AUDIENCE AND SAY "HEY, ISN'T THAT WEIRD". WHY THE gently caress DID ANYBODY THINK THAT WAS A GOOD IDEA?

Anyway it was pretty good apart from that.

I think the idea is that it's so absurd it becomes great just on that basis.

Imagine instead that the Doctor realized he had a bunch of chewing gum in his pocket due to their previous stop being the Chewing Gum Planet. So he pulls out like a hundred pounds of chewing gum (his pocket is bigger on the inside than the outside) and sets all the vikings to furiously chewing on it. Then, when the bad guys arrive, they fall into a giant pit-trap filled with chewed gum and are unable to escape.

It would be utterly stupid and ridiculous, but that very quality would make it amazing. For some people, the eels approach this.

Mmm, yes, just about The Snowmen.

Toxxupation posted:

The funny thing about grief is that it's personal to the point of selfishness. It's not like grieving our dead changes anything. I mean, they're dead. It's not like feeling horrible over someone else being dead brings them back, it's not like they end up judging you for it. No,what grief does is it allows the ones who are grieving to place value on the departed's life by, paradoxically, realizing how important the dead person was to them. We view others through the prism of ourselves, and the strange irony of grief is that it allows one to be selfless by being selfish. This person was there for us, and now they're not, and what we grieve is not necessarily their death, but their absence. People grieve when they break up, for instance. It's the same emotion, just made more or less important based on scope. The magnitude of loss.

Not a word about Heaven Sent.

In contrast, "Heaven Sent" is an episode that, from beginning to end, is about The Doctor dealing with and processing his grief. The restriction of the scope to a one-man show doesn't just create a fantastic acting showcase for Peter Capaldi. It also means that "Heaven" can confront The Doctor with his feelings for Clara, repeatedly and without compromise. The world isn't at stake, there's no weird comic relief characters. There's no random atonal bits like, say, an idiotic scene of a woman walking on a staircase leading up to a cloud as overly twee music plays. No. "Heaven Sent" wants Twelve to really think about Clara, and what she meant to him, and so it imprisons him in a glorified puzzle box with zero distractions.

Well, there's also the Veil, to be fair. But even then, the Veil is both a voiceless antagonist that is singularly focused on murdering The Doctor and "Heaven"'s most blatant grief analogy. The Doctor is being chased by a personification of his greatest fear (which happens to be a dead person), one that follows him relentlessly and can't be stopped, trapped, tricked, or reasoned with. It only gives Twelve a moment's relief when he's with honest with it and, more importantly, himself. Although it's stereotypical, one could easily see Twelve's confessions to the Veil as "Acceptance", the final and most important stage of the five stages of grief. He's internalized and understood a greater truth, and each time he does so he progresses a bit further in the maze.

The most important thing to note about grief is, again, its highly personal nature. It's a process that comes from within, not without. Other people can't do your grieving for you, it's a process that can take months or even years to go through, and some people never overcome it at all. But the point is, there are no shortcuts, and each person's grieving process is highly individualized.

Truly the worst-written review ever.

"Heaven Sent" also takes its time. The grieving process is a lengthy one, which presents a neat conundrum when dealing with a time traveler like Twelve. Time as a length, as a fixture to imply significance to a narrative, is almost impossible to do with the Doctor. Grieving for years is an unimaginably short period for him. Grieving "to the end of your life" has no practical meaning to a man who can regenerate endlessly. For the process to have weight, it needs to be for an incomprehensibly long time. As the wall that most obviously represents the layers of sorrow and anger he feels, Twelve needs to punch his way through it, taking billion of years and millions of lives to do so. It's the only way that gives Clara's death any importance.

I think, on the whole, I consider Clara one of the weaker Companions of the revival - her first half-season was a disaster, she only had one season to really shine (and even Series Eight was filled with absolute stinkers for her character like "In the Forest of the Night" and "Kill the Moon"), and here in Series Nine she felt barely extant before "Face the Raven". With "Heaven Sent", though, I'm willing to give her the respect that her character deserves, solely because of how strong of a eulogy she gets here. If there's a better compliment to give this episode than that, I haven't seen it.

Man, I'm just so disappointed. Toxx, we're cutting your pay in half from now on.

Bringing Clara back still felt like cheating to me, but there was definitely some good stuff in this one.

Back to a tie, between Red Metal and And More. It all comes down to the special! One more to go, and we put this thing to bed.

A little note on this one: before the last batch of votes came in (when it was just the people who voted in a slate at the beginning), this episode had one of the highest standard deviations of the season. Now, it's on the low end. It may not mean anything, but it's a curious little bit of trivia.

The Husbands of River Song

Most people guessed high on this episode. Mostly because it's pretty good! I think whimsy may have mugged Toxx in an alley at some point, though.

And with that, we have a victor! Congratulations to Red Metal, our winner of the "guess what Toxx will say next" contest for this season of Doctor Who! I'll post a few more statistics later, and then we can hash out prizes.

For the record, the penalty on the other side is pretty good too. I am legitimately unsure which of them I want to lose more.

Clearly the only answer is to set up additional betrayals and trick him into bets until he has seen every classic Who episode and is a gibbering incoherent mess asking only for the pain to cease.

What I often suggest to people is to treat it like watching a play rather than a television show. You have to make some allowances based on what was possible given the conditions the thing was made under if you want to have any chance of enjoying it.

If the goal is still to avoid things that take themselves seriously, you absolutely do not want to touch From Hell or Miracleman, brilliant as they are. For Alan Moore that doesn't take itself too seriously, try Tom Strong or Top Ten.
