VR is a fad.

Having tried it quite a bit.. it's not. It really isn't. It's pretty much here to stay.

I've seen some tech demos where the VR was linked directly to live action footage (recorded on an omnidirectional camera) and I can safely say that one day that'll be the thing that finally kills movie theaters. Unless they have a giant room of people all wearing headsets as a theater of the future, for those too poor to buy your own (or use whatever gimmicks they try to stay relevant).

How was my evening? I'm glad you asked:

Clicked the shop open just after it had gone live.

White screen. Already b0rked?

Ok, a couple of tries later I get in. $599 What the gently caress? Palmer's been talking about a $350+ ballpark for ages now. That's 600 USD!

But I'm in Europe, so I'll add Finland as destination country. Ok, let's do that.

It switched to euros and gave me a price of €699. And that's without shipping, so it'll be another €40 or whatever for shipping.

This goddamned thing is costing €740 to get over to Europe... That's 800 US Dollars!

"A $350+ ballpark range"... my hairy (although delightfully firm) rear end!!!

gently caress it! I'm waiting until the Touch controllers come out and the other systems too.
I've waited two decades for this tech to emerge. I can wait another year!
I feel pretty much kicked in the nuts by their bullshit, to be honest.

Honestly the idea that these kind of systems could be a profitable home based gaming accessory is dumb.

The money in a system like this is making centers where people go and spend high amounts of money to play on a completely 100% immersive solution.

Either that or DRM locking down the hardware and charging out the rear end for software licenses then heavily subsidizing the hardware.

Give a man a fish he'll eat for a day; give a man a virtual reality headset and he'll sort of sit there pretending to chew on a fish that isn't there as much as he wants.

Yeah I'm sure they will but what I'm saying is that they might be able to reach more total revenue by pricing it cheaper and moving more units.

It's like when strategy game grognards make a game and want to charge $150 for it. Even if it's a good game no one is buying it aside from a small group of diehards. Of course there's a market for expensive computer peripherals; but is that the optimal price point in terms of maximizing sales/revenues?

I mean poo poo if you priced it at $2000 someone would still buy it, the point is how many sales are you making? 20k units at $600+ is good but a million units at $250-300 is better, assuming they're not already at razor thin margins. Kinda doubt it though.

I'm going to assume this subsidiary of a company worth hundreds of billions did the math on the optimal price point.
This year they will sell it to the people who will pay whatever. The people who buy phones that costs this much every year.
Gives them a chance to streamline the manufacturing and work out the bugs (maybe get some actual content worth consuming). Next model all the other people get to play as well, and the early adopters will buy that version as well.

That's loving outrageous tbh.

I thought it'd be like $400 and even at that price it's too expensive. I mean it's really cool and all but what can you do with it other than flight/space sims and porn? There's not enough software that couples with it to justify $630 and most of the games that do work with it just give you additional stuff to look at; there's no additional VR functionality or anything it's just like cool now I can look around my Kerbal cockpit by turning my head instead of the mouse.

It's neat but I'm not shelling that much out to watch porn.

You can't do anything with it actually, the $400 videocard you bought last year that you thought was a great deal will run at the old refresh rates that made people sick after 30 seconds of playing.

I did a bit of work developing an oculus VR environment in Unity for a local college over the summer and I gently explained that without an extremely fast PC they'd be wiping sick off the floor every goddamn day.

Instead they ordered a PC with an AMD R5 and I cannot wait for the blood gates to open when they have their first cases of motion sickness

I got one for free and while I thought it was pretty cool, it got boring really quick.
Mostly because I didn't want to spend any money on the VR games for $5+ that I'd probably finish in less then an hour and never do anything else with them again.

I was considering ordering the Oculus if it was $350 or so, but when I saw the $599 price tag I just closed the tab.

EVE: Valkyrie looks fun though.
