Speaking of a man child...

My former roommate almost killed us both after he cooked in our gas oven without lighting it up first. He'd just start the gas, press the grill button, and wait.

The whole house got filled with gas, and it's nothing short of a miracle we didn't die.

I have also heard it described as "the pornographication of sexuality."

That does make some sense though. Expectations about female genitalia come from porn, where younger look is preferred, so they shave. It's the same with uneven labia, which is not seen in pro, which is now the cause for women having surgery to make their labia more appealing.

This isn't an argument for or against porn, just about how it played on our expectations of how a body should look.

Speaking as a recent college graduated male who has participated in numerous communal showers with other college-age males, I have noticed a trend towards the removal of chest and pubic hair in males as well. I'm not a particularly hairy guy but I have received some criticism for leaving my chest unshaved (I've been taking the scorched earth route toward my pubes with a razor since high school though).

So yeah, the shoe is on the other foot these days concerning body hair.

From reddit, which I visited because I'm an idiot.

Regarding Cuba's horrible human rights record.

quote:

Alot of that is just Amnesty International and other American backed NGO's bullshit to feed a narrative. Yes, opponents of the regime have been imprisoned. But they have been because of their clear support to capitalist restoration.
Yeah, it's not like Human Rights Watch or Amnesty ever condemn the US or right wingers.
Hell, if you ask some Americans they'll tell you those ngos are leftist and that they never condemn leftist regimes. It's the same idiotic argument from both sides.

Regarding a previous comment he made saying that any person killed by Guevara and the revolutionaries had it coming.

quote:

I hear all the time about Guevara killiing innocents, but they never give concrete examples like any specific massacre or case of mass murder. Would you consider a guy like Luke Skywalker to be a murderer? (I know, kinda dumb example but I think it delivers).</p>

This weekend we went to stay for a couple of days with my mother in law. We were having some drinks and watching the olympics, when my mother in law asks us how many continents there are, and if we know them all. We kind of stare at her for a second, and she confesses that she doesn't know them all, and that there are a couple she "can never remember". The problematic ones turned out to be Antarctica and Australia, FYI. She was doubly floored when I revealed to her that Australia was in fact it's own continent. She is 56.

Also she owns a globe (which is silver and sparkly and apparently 100% for decoration only).

Just as an interesting fact, what is and isn't a continent is also dependent of where you studied.
In South America, where I went to school, Australia isn't considered its own continent, but only part of the continent of Oceania, and which includes other islands (like Fiji and New Zealand).

Not that this excuses her, of course.

In everyday life you never need to know if the moon makes its own light or whether the sun revolves around the earth or is the sun a planet

You're kidding, right? Or do you actually consider knowing that the earth is not to center of the universe to be some sort of arcane knowledge that only a selected few can grasp?

If you're kidding, I'm sorry, but I routinely find people who almost pride themselves on the fact that they know only things related to their job, and that's it. I am an attorney, and I teach at a leading European university, and it's a very common phenomenon even among academics.

I'm generally shocked by how little people actually read. I've read theses of llm students that suggest they have never read a book in their lives.

Recently I told a student that his conclusion was wrong, since he merely summarized everything he HD already said. "I'll change the time to 'summary' then." ugh...

Edit. Just FYI, since I realize it can come off as humblebrags, the goal was to point out that academia, law, etc., are full of ignorant people who just learned one thing and stuck to it.

That's not what I said either, dude...

Like seriously, the situation is that someone won't let someone else hold a baby after smoking outside without changing their clothes first. Not talking about the smell or it being gross, just talking about the health risks of touching clothes someone smoked in that day. How hard is that to understand? I never once said anything otherwise.

If the science behind third hand smoking checks out, the idea is that there are carcinogens left in the clothings. Babies who are pressed against those clothes will probably put those carcinogens in their mouth, this putting their health at risk.

Of course I'd be curious to know what levels of exposure are needed for actual damage to occur. Still, there seem to be good reasons to keep stinky grandma away from the baby.

You don't think it's a little weird and demeaning to make someone change clothes over a couple cigarettes with of third hand smoke? Much less a smell?

And again, I've never said anything about rights. I just think it's a weird thing to make someone do, and I think worrying about third hand smoke on clothes is stupid.

Somebody posted the link regarding third-hand smoke. Since you're being so dismissive, are you saying that there is no such thing, that the evidence doesn't exist, or that it isn't a serious problem?

Now, I agree with you, it's lovely if your sister deprives your mom of holding the baby. If she's doing it out of spite, it's definitely something they should work through; if she has genuine health concerns, however, then your mom should be the one making the change. Hell, if she cares that much about her grand-daughter she should stop doing everything in her power not to see her grow up.

Hobbes posted:

In India's case it probably goes back to Subhash Chandra Bose, who's the dude in uniform saluting on that billboard. He was president of the Indian National Congress (not a ruling body, but the name of the political party Gandhi was a member of) in '38 and '39, and during the start of WWII wanted to take the opportunity to seize India from the British while they were busy with Germany. Gandhi and the moderates of the party pushed him out of the inner circle, so he formed his own more radical Forward Bloc Party to push for Indian independence through military means.

The British declared him a terrorist and put him under house arrest, but he fled and traveled to Moscow and tried to partner with the Communists and when that didn't go well he flew to Berlin where he was personally greeted by Hitler. He allied with the Axis powers, and Japan released something like 60k Indian POWs captured (fighting previously to defend British holdings) into Bose's command, and then moved west across SE Asia gathering more India expats in support to form the Indian National Army. With some Japanese support he marched on the British holdings in the east of India in '44 but got bogged down and eventually defeated. He then dies a martyr of sorts for Indian independence when the plane he catches back to Japan crashes, but he and his army get written out of the history books for decades once Gandhi's party eventually takes over India from Britain, and try to sweep the violent military methods of Bose under the rug in favor of their non-violent narrative.

In the last couple decades Subhash Chandra Bose has seen something of a resurgence as nationalist figure, and as Hitler was one of the first world powers pushing for Indians to take back India from the British into their own control... and thus Indian Nazi fun time cosplay.

I never took a Mongolian history class though so beats me what their excuse is.

In reality logic and emotion are not compatible; this is what males refer to as female logic... which in reality is irrational behavior.

Females see the world through a different reality than males; feelings are the same as logic. This is just one of the many reasons that females are not capable of creating civilizations.

Men are seen to rely on their intellectual capabilities rather than on emotion or intuition. Utilization of reason and logic enable men to view situations objectively and thus respond to them in a rational way. Only factual information is considered, while “feelings” are deemed unsuitable evidence on which to base decisions, yet for women basing important decisions on feelings is perfectly logical.
