Yeah, you! Are you tired of wasting your precious pooping time on cheap IAP grindfests? Sick of spending every waking moment looking at virtual catte buttes? Well fret no more, friend, because now every toilet break is a social event you can share with goons around the globe! Wow! Tell me more! Every good nerd likes to get a group together for a long evening of board games and drinking. Sadly, adult life can make it difficult to find time for everybody to find the time to meet up as often as we’d like. Fortunately, many of the world’s best board games have been recreated digitally, making a vast selection of entertainment available at any time, and at a far lower price than you’d be paying in a shop. There are way, way too many digital ports of board games to list them all here, and to be honest a lot of them are subpar for one reason or another. Instead, here are some of the community’s favourites; a much longer (but still far from exhaustive) list of board game ports is available in the previous thread. If you want to play something more obscure, let us know! Post about it here or jump in the GroupMe chat and you’ll probably find a willing victim. No really, get the GroupMe app and join the goon chat group. It’s much more active than the thread and is the best place to find people willing to play games and/or bitch about nerdy minutiae.
Our all-time favourites. These games are the best examples of what a good iOS board game should be, and there’s always somebody looking to play.
These games are fun, well-made, and have solid multiplayer. You should have no problems finding an opponent in the GroupMe.
These games are great games, but there’s something missing from each of them that prevents it from being a top-tier candidate for online play. Often this means buggy (or missing) online multiplayer, or the game itself just doesn’t translate to a digital format well. But gosh darn it, they're just too lovable to ignore them entirely.
There’s a few other handy links you should know about :
Remember, the games listed here are far from everything that’s available - there’s a longer list in the old thread, or just ask if you’re looking for something in particular. And finally, if you really like a game, consider getting the real version and introducing it to your friends and family! TACD fucked around with this message at 10:22 on Jun 26, 2016 |

Baseball Highlights 2045 is releasing soon, which I'm stoked about. It's a drafting team building baseball sim that's gotten great reviews in the board game world, and it has cool cybernetic players, robots, and "naturals" that balance things in a paper rock scissors style.

I feel like Galaxy Trucker should be in Goon Favorites instead of Ascension. Ascension is a bad game with a great port. Galaxy Trucker has one of the best adaptations and is a fantastic game. The only mark against it is the clunky online play. Edit: And Dominion deserves a mention along with all the horrible caveats about its model. It plays reasonably well even though it's insanely expensive and requires an internet connection. cbirdsong fucked around with this message at 16:07 on Jan 17, 2016 |

The separate iPad and iPhone versions is a mark against it as well, but yeah, it's pretty great. I bought the iPad version when it first released and am unwilling to rebuy it on my phone. But if anyone wants to play on iPad I'm in.

Eclipse looks like the exact kind of game I want on my phone, why does it have to be iPad only? I think our iPad is a 2nd gen model, really old at this point. Any other space-themed games I could look at instead that aren't mentioned in the OP?

Chess How about a nice game of chess? Since every few months someone asks about the best chess apps on iOS, I thought I'd post about a few of the best. Offline Chess Pro Chess Pro is my personal favorite. It has excellent scaling AI via the Tiger Engine. The thing that sets this app above the rest is the coach system. Unlike most "coach" systems that just tell you the best move, Chess Pro shows a selection of good moves weighted by how good it thinks each one is. This allows you to actually develop strategies with guidance rather than just doing what you're told and not learning anything. It can also be turned on an off at any point during a game. Apart from that you can save and replay games, import games you've played online using the standard PGN format. It also comes with a massive library of famous games played by the masters. Shredder Chess If all you need is a good Chess AI on your phone, Shredder chess is a great alternative to Chess Pro. It uses the Shredder Engine for scaling AI. Shredder also comes with a collection of 1000 tactics puzzles to solve which are a great way to improve your game. The game also has a basic coach that will warn you if you're about to make a bad move. Stockfish Chess This is the best free chess app available and possesses possibly the best chess engine available on iOS. The app uses a combination of the well regarded and open source Stockfish engine as well as a large opening book to provide a very dynamic opponent. The app also has an analysis mode to review your games. When you open the app, it will check your device's clipboard for a PNG format game, and will give you the option to import it for analysis if it finds one. Online Chess Play & Learn Whether you want to play a correspondence game or a live game with a real opponent, chess.com's iOS app is one of the best places to do it. This is probably the best all around app, especially if you are also looking or resources to improve your game with lessons, tactics, and analysis. This app has the largest player base and you will always be able to find a game with automatic matchmaking. As an extension of chess.com, you can have access to most of their premium features on your phone if you happen to be a subscriber to the site. Lichess Lichess.org is a very popular alternative to Chess.com. Both the website and the app are completely free, and even offer some features you'd have to pay for on chess.com. Similar to the chess.com app, lichess offers correspondence games, live games, tactics, and an analysis board that uses the stockfish engine. If you are looking for a place to play chess and not interested in things like lessons or news, lichess is a cheaper option. Chess Time Chess Time is nice little chess app built specifically for mobile platforms only. Its a clean straightforward app that lets you play as many async games as you like without limitation. It tracks your Elo within the player base and it will match you against players with similar skill levels, or you can play with the people on your in app friends list. Board Game iOS versions are cool because usually it saves me from being tempted to buy physical copy of a game and waste my precious "I have people together to play with" time on games that are better played against AI, like Splendor. Edit - Star Realms too. gently caress that game, I am glad I played it on iOS first to know that it is not very good. jeeves fucked around with this message at 23:01 on Jan 17, 2016 |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Star Realms iOS was a passable port. It definitely fills the same niche for me as Ascension although it's less painful to play in person, so the relative value of the app may be lower.

I'm really wishing the Puerto Rico port had the standard game boards as alternatives. The fields arent a problem, but trying to identify a building off hand is really annoying.

But Ascension is a better game and a much better app. Star Realms is barely held together JavaScript garbage over a barebones deckbuilder that mostly plays itself. Ascension at least got interesting and better with each expansion.

Reminder also that Ascension isn't meant to be played Dominion-style with all the expansions active at the same time. Run it in blocks (Chronicle/Return, Storm/Heroes, Vigil/Darkness, and Realms/Champions) and you'll have a much better time.

I'm loving Splendor, I've won all of three times! Plus it plays a hell of a lot faster than the actual board game, and you don't have to sit there doing math in your head all the time.

Yeah it's great for teaching the game but it's missing the rub your opponents faces in it factor of a live game.
