Here in dystopian SE Mich, we had a permanent, natural-gas-fed, generator installed on our bungalow home worth approximately 0 dollars because not only is the water system hosed but the power company refuses to upgrade our infrastructure so our power was going out for two days at a time whenever a stiff loving wind would blow. It's too noisy for my sperglordian tastes but it serves a good purpose.

Ehud posted:- Make sure I have enough water for my dogs in case the pipes freeze. Tip: leave your taps dripping to help prevent the pipes from freezing. If your pipes freeze they can burst and that is very bad. If your house has lovely insulation leave one tap dripping in each room that has a tap. If you have any outside taps, see if you can find the indoor shut off for them. Turn the inside tap off and the outside tap wide open so they drain as much as possible.

Ehud posted:I think the south is just really into anything to do with survival. I used to work at a grocery store and I was the only person with 4x4 who was able to get in during winter storms. It was always a complete ghost town except for redneck dudes who drove up in their 4 wheelers to buy booze and junkfood. Not just that, it is the infrastructure and how businesses run. I worked in a grocery store for a long time and one truck not making it would result in our shelves being empty 12 hours later. It would take 2-3 deliveries to get back to a full stock sense of normalcy. Throw in a war / disaster / social upheaval with distribution problems and society ends in 48-72 hours. It is scary as hell to think about once you realize how quick everything goes even under normal circumstances.

I live in SE Tennessee and we got a bit of ice and snow yesterday. Roads were bad but everyone is too loving stupid to figure out how to drive in bad weather. People still drove fast and tailgated and all that stuff even though the roads were slushy and had ice in some parts. We're probably not going to get any snow from this stuff but people are still going to empty all the stores of bottled water and bread because of one blizzard we had 20 years ago makes people think every snow is going to cripple the city for a week.

revmoo posted:fyi a big contributing factor is the fact that a lot of cars in the south run summer tires year round which are completely and totally incompatible with any amount of snow or ice. Yeah they're idiots but their cars are also simply not roadworthy when it comes to ice and snow. Snow tires are a crutch, I roll all winter in wi with fuel saver tires and like it. I also drive a manual though which helps a ton. The key is don't be a loving moron and stomp on the gas like you have total control.
