You walk into a ritual chamber, your employer answering the last of your questions on the way. When you enter, you are greeted by the sight of an iridescent metal fish roughly the size of a Baneblade. Feathery strands protrude from the creature’s back, waving gently as it undulates and slowly lowers itself to the floor. “Just climb on and hold on tight. She’ll get you there safe, but I wouldn’t want to fall off halfway through. Once you’re done, contact me and I’ll send her to pick you up.” While you climb on board and settle snugly onto the ray, servants load the last of your supplies onboard, hooking wrapped bundles onto the vacant strands on the thing’s back. “There’s food for a couple of weeks, a map, a water condenser, some spare ammo, tents, local currency, and a goat in a stasis box. Last one’s for the phone call. Map only covers the immediate few hundred kilometres, we haven’t exactly combed this world grain of sand by grain of sand. Would’ve included a travel guide but couldn’t find one.” Almost as soon as Jebediah finished listing your inventory, the aether ray rises off the floor and dives into the stone wall ahead. Predictably, physics fails to register a collision, and the scenery changes. You look at Q’sal from the warp, the sorcerer’s towers extending into the immaterium and the environment abuzz with activity, growing rapidly more distant. Soon you see nothing but the warp itself, no wills imposing a structure upon the antithesis of constancy and order. Then the world changes again, and you’re back in the materium. You see sand. You smell sand. You hear sand. The talkative amongst you taste sand. The ray lands in the desert, hovering above sand surrounded by a few globs of something glistening and unnatural. As soon as you have disembarked, the aether ray implodes out of your vision, returning to its master. The gooey side effects of unconventional warp travel seep into the sand and fade. The wind dies, and the sky clears of sand. On the horizon, you see a tiny speck of a city, surrounded by nothing but oceans of sand. You are standing on a large dune. You dig out the map you were promised, and find a single dataslate, with a single file, containing a single, crude image. In addition to your starting gear, you have as a group gained: 3 4-person tents. Rations for 12 people for 14 days. A water condenser and 15 flasks. Three additional clips of ammunition for your primary weapons (rule of six instead of rule of 3). One medikit. One multicompass. One unopened medium-size stasis box. Assuming that you will approach the city (which you don't have to), how do you do it? Waci fucked around with this message at 14:32 on Jan 22, 2016 |

Tloloc "Feels like home. Let us get moving to that city and get some eyes on. Make contact with the local population and find out the extent of Imperial infestation before we make any further plans." Tloloc tries to get his bearings but the only landmark he can possibly, and he's not even sure if its reliable, is the glimmer of what may be a settlement. If their map is right, if they are on the mapsheet the city of Atar would be to the north east. Tloloc very irresponsibly points his big-rear end gun at things in order to use its rangefinder to estimate the distance to the horizon. He succeeds at pointing at a stationary target, and finds that you are 34768.420 metres away from the possible building in the distance.

Tloloc Raising his Autocannon to the horizon, aiming at the spec and using the rangefinder built into his autosenses to figure out the exact distance on that "speck". It comes up 34768.420 on his helmet visor. Tloloc looks around at the gathered heretics and traitor Marines, including one fallen Adeptas Sororitas. He tries to reckon about how much all of them could take before collapsing in the desert heat. "We have roughly 35km to cover before we reach whatever that is in the open. I believe it to be the settlement of Atar on the map we were given. It could as easily be the Imperial controlled town of Nad'halan. This we will not know until we can actually see it from closer up, about at least a kilometer away would be a good vantage point from the dunes. And its the only landmark we have in this forsaken dustball so we are going, there is no negotiation on this point. And...we can definitely make it there within 4 hours if you keep pace with me brothers and sisters. Let us go forth!" To travel 35km in narrative time at the slowest pace (Epicurius is 3AB, unless someone is slower.) will be 8.75 hours normally. We can also hurry with individual characters and make it in 3.9 hours instead. My character, the Terminator Champion whose doing the landnav and trying to lead the party there is going to insist on maintaining at least a 6AB pace so we all go there together. Assuming the lowest toughness bonus is 3. This is our travel time: 3 hours Hurrying with a toughness test which gets us to 27km where we can rest for an hour to recover that one level of fatigue and get our bearings once more. Then if we still want to finish the trip there, it would be 2 hours of narrative time without hurrying where we can pay full attention to our surroundings. But if our surrounding are simply the desert I'm sure we'll be ok. Edit: Before someone brings up running in narrative time, terminators can't run. That makes me the slowest person if you wanted to rush for 2 hours but you're welcome to do it and I'd still keep up a decent pace (I hurry at AB 8 and epicurius's dude could RUN at AB 9) quote:HURRYING Viva Miriya fucked around with this message at 15:56 on Jan 22, 2016 |

Oscar Verduk Oscar glances from Joe to Caleb and decides it's better not to even ask what the hell they're talking about. Instead, he rubs his spectacles distractedly and frowns. Konstantin Androv Despite the unpleasant conditions and worse pace, Konstantin looked almost comfortable as he marched with the rest of the ad-hoc mercenary platoon. Of course it was all just for show, Androv was as miserable as any other man in an heavy coat in the midst of a sun scorched desert should be. Still, the lessons learned in the schola regarding displays of power and confidence were just as applicable to scum such as these. If anyone were being honest, the average guardsman may as well be one step removed anyway. Hearing the ostentatiously armored killer voice his contempt for the guard, a small frown forms on Androv's lips. "Commissar Captain Konstantin Androv," he barks rather sharply. "You would do well to respect the men of the guard. Misguided as they are, they've crushed greater threats than you underfoot. When the Imperium falls it will be to such as them, not aging relics still grasping at past glories." pre:Race: Human Archetype: Renegade Pride: Charm Disgrace: Regret Motivation: Legacy Experience: 1700/1000 Advances: Charm 200 Ambidextrous 250 Two Weapon Wielder (Ranged) 500 Drill Instruction 750 Characteristics: WS 31 (25+3) (+3 Renegade) BS 43 (25+15) (+3 Renegade) S 29 (25+4) T 33 (25+13) (-5 (Pride) Ag 40 (25+15) Int 31 (25+10) (-4 (Motivation) Per 33 (25+8) WP 38 (25+13) Fel 49 (25+19) (+5 (Pride) Inf 25 (19+3 ) (+2 (Motivation) Wounds: 14 Infamy Points: 2 Corruption: 7 (+5 (Disgrace) Skills: Athletics Awareness Dodge +10 Parry Scholastic Lore (Tactica Imperialis) Common Lore (War, Imperial Guard, Imperial Creed) Trade (Cryptographer) Linguistics (Low Gothic) Operate (Aeronautica) Command Charm Stealth Medicae Talents: Ambidextrous - Reduce Dual Wield Penalty Two Weapon Wielder (Ranged) - Can Dual Wield Jaded - Immune to Mundane Fear Quick Draw - Draw as Free Action Rapid Reload - Reload Time Halved W. Tloloc He's gonna have to keep an eye out for this one, Tloloc thought to himself as the human spoke and let out a scathing diatribe. "I like you already Androv. Maybe you might have what it takes in your heart to walk the Path of Glory. But no the Guard are weaklings in body and soul. They are called the hammer of the emperor because when you muster enough firepower in one place there's not much that can stand their might. And yet across countless war zones people who wish to be free resist them succesfully. Entire worlds meat grinders where nothing changes for millennia. The only exception I might allow for are the Tallarn and the Cadians. The Tallarn for defeating the Iron Warriors legion during the Heresy and the Cadians for living a life constantly under siege. Imagine what those soldiers could do with the right guidance. But for all their accomplishments and fame throughout the millennia they are still human. As are you. And that makes them expendable until proven otherwise. Just like you." You set off, with the genetically enhanced or stubborn people walking, a few flying just above the ground, and the rest riding on the helpful space marines. The sand goes on for hours. Eventually, you stop for a moment, the city still distant but now clearly identifiable as a group of buildings visible from the tops of the tallest dunes, approximately 8 kilometres away. You have not seen a single living creature, though you have started seeing the occasional rock and even some signs of human activity in the sand, whether caravan tracks or the remains of long-abandoned wooden structures. You sit down to rest on the back of a large dune, obscured from sight from the city by favourable sand. See, the sand can be your friend too! You estimate sunset to be 5 hours away, based on the sun's movement during your march. Everyone who is not a space marine, make a -10 Toughness test. Environmentally sealed/refrigerated armour reduces the difficulty to +0. If you were carried by a space marine, the test is at +20. If you don't roll before the next update, I will roll for you. Describe any actions you take here, regarding reconnoitring or resting, and when and how you approach the city.

Itztli Even for the hardened hunter, the endless sun and baking heat were taking their toll. Sweat had stained many of the bright feathers adorning his body, matting them down so they trapped yet more heat against his baking flesh. Still, his eyes roved the sand, hunting for any sign of life besides the few remnants of the local settlers. "This place is dead. Nothing alive but the settlers themselves. Why are we even here to kill them? The world will slay them more effectively than we ever could." Toughness test failed, rolled a 45 needed a 32. Survival test to see living things failed, rolled a 60, needed a 16. Both rolls made on IRC

Joe opens a tiny rift into the warp, forming lenses of warp-matter in front of her eyes, and peers at the city. Tiny in the distance, but now distinguishable, domes of glass, copper, and crystal glitter in the sun. Humanoid figures, barely visible from this far, move between the buildings, robes shimmering whenever the sun touches them. Anyone who fails their toughness test, suffers 1 level of fatigue.

We need a scouting party to check out the town. Oscar what do you know about the Missionaria Galactica if anything? This organization belongs the Ecclesiarchy, from I know its supposed to spread the word of the false emperor to forsaken places like this. Anything that you know could prove useful. Patchouli, our mission is to ensure these imperial missionaries die and the taint they spread to the local population eradicated. Now help me get these tents deployed. Konstantin Androv Androv inclines his head slightly toward the marine. "You see the faceless mass as weak because it cannot stand alone," he says in more cordial tones. "I hold that it is that pooled effort that creates real power in the galaxy." He gestures dismissively. "Still, I must concede their record is a spotted one. That is after all the very thing that lead me to the Eye. Were I to free one world or a dozen from the chains of the Empire it would amount to nothing. Within a generation they would be drowned in men and weaponry far beyond their ability to cope. However, with the backing of the ruinous powers even a relative few might stave off the assault. I have seen it." Contrary to his animated words, Androv finds his muscles burning with the effort of finding footing among the shifting sand. Inwardly cursing every dune in sight, he struggles to hide the growing fatigue. Stubborn Desert Walk: 1d100 33 Tran fucked around with this message at 01:48 on Jan 24, 2016 |

Oscar Verduk "Big, tall, and scary has a point. I've seen the Imperial Guard tithe numbers necessary to keep the machine going. They might have crushed quite a few enemies in their day, but mostly they seem to crush people under the weight of their corpses. I mean, throwing people at an enemy until they run out of ammo or keep tripping over all the severed limbs is a viable strategy, but it's also the reason we've got so many ex-Guard here." Oscar turns and points at one of the unoccupied marines. "I call shotgun. Seriously, it's that or I collapse halfway there and you end up carrying me anyway. Office work did not prepare me for this dusty waste of a planet." Several hours later Oscar sways slightly on his feet, wondering how anywhere could be this frigging hot. He hadn't even walked and he felt like he was going to die. Lucille looked about the same, and she actually had walked. He turns to Tloloc and shrugs. "Sorry, I got nothing. Ecclesiarchy always hated sharing what they were doing with us. It was frigging infuriating, honestly, and now that I know the Emperor's dead, well, I don't have the slightest compunction about killing every last one of the bastards. I'm sure I can talk my way in, though. Shouldn't be too hard to pose as lost pilgrims trying to find the holy God-Emperor's servants so we can pay our dues or something, people expect pilgrims to have more faith than sense." Patchouli Ramrod Desert toughness test: 1d100 76 vs Toughness 35 I don't think this armour counts as environmentally sealed, but I'm not trudging through the sand like a common peasant either. Doesn't matter anyway. Patchouli keeps a watch on her new comrades as she rides in style atop one of the heavy-lifting, genetically enhanced specimens. Disappointingly few of them seem cybernetically enhanced. The Astartes might well be brimming with ancient secrets from the Heresy but as long as they keep their armour on she'll never know. Those ex-Guard often have something built in like a bionic eye or limb, but these ones seem entirely intact and stubbornly proud of their mediocrity. That loony psyker appears as plain as a slab of starch loaf, though that desk-clerk is hefting a very impressive piece of sonic weaponry. Must get a look at that later. But that warrior! Dressed in skins, feathers and dirt! Wielding a spear! Like an feral-worker from a bad doc drama. Probably hateful of technology and thinks pict-takers steal people's souls (well sometimes that happens, but it depends on if it's possessed). Stay away from that one. As the afternoon wears on her self-assembled power armour does not take the stresses of the environment well. Any good production model would handle a hot day like this easily, and have at least a few redundant systems for venting heat. But hers was custom. It was pieced together from six different suits, assembled by hand, and incorporated dozens of alterations to better fit around her implants and make the most of limited resources. So naturally overpiling the nuclear pebble bed was the best way to boost power, you could get the material almost anywhere. Though that did make it run hot and it couldn't really be turned down without reassembling the entire thing. And to save space the typical heat cycler had been replaced by what she thought was really cool, the radiator vanes that extended from behind her shoulders, glowing red and occasionally spitting sparks. Sometimes a large insect or small bird would fly into the thermal wave and incinerate. Cheap and effective, but not super adaptable. It had never actually been tested in an environment like this. She had to spend the entire ride fiddling with settings, mediating the power flow and cycling systems on and off as her pride and joy dangerously overheated. All this so she wouldn't suddenly burst into flame like the galaxy's most expensive Emperor's Feast bonfire. Suffice to say by the time the group stopped close to the destination, her mind was tired and her body ached. Except her legs, they hadn't done anything useful today. Serp "I am called Serp. I'm here to be your eyes." The sniper ignored most of the chatter that was going on, instead choosing to check his weapons. They were well covered but dust and sand are notoriously vicious if they got into the action of a gun. After his little speech, such as it is, he takes to the sky. Raven black wings beat the air and he begins to catch the heat rising from the desert pan to carry him up and up and up.
