It could mean anything, really. Death, who took Barlow away. Death, who is the monster he created in Flint. Or yeah, the death that awaits him down the brutal path he's chosen, spurred on by him seeing "We die alone" in the first episode.

Was it a goon that worked on sound for the show? Mad props because those storm scenes were absolutely wicked. The growl of the sea was awesome

It's a great making of video for how they did the practical effects behind the storm episode.

They ended up building two new practical sets just for the storm episode.

Now that I think about it I can't think of too many other things I've seen that come close to that sequence. It's really loving bonkers what they did.

You'd raise the black flag when closing on your intended victim to let them know you were a pirate and they should really, really surrender now. If they decided to fight anyway, you might raise the red flag instead, and no quarter would be given even to crew who tried to surrender after that point. Obviously, many ships would rather surrender while the black was flying than risk a fight to the death with hardened criminals.

Wikipedia posted:

In June 1720 when Bartholomew Roberts sailed into the harbour at Trepassey, Newfoundland with black flags flying, the crews of all 22 vessels in the harbour abandoned them in panic.

Of course, if you slaughtered crews under the black flag, your victims couldn't know what to expect of you and would therefore be smarter to resist you after all.

They really nailed the wild crazy ride of terror such a storm creates. I've been on a tall ship in a force 10 storm and Billy's 'get below deck and ride it out' is really the only thing you can do. One crew member was on the bowsprit and got dunked into the water like in this episode, he was attached in a safety harness but still broke his leg from the force.

Still not really seeing the point of telling your prospective opponent in battle that you will unconditionally murder the poo poo out of them instead of just doing it.

Rad Gravity

You only raise the red flag after battle is already joined. This way, the victims know that they'll live if they surrender while the black is flying. Raising the red flag and killing all crew is just setting an example for other ships of what will happen if they fight. By contrast, legitimate privateers were required by law to give quarter to a surrendering enemy, which means fighting them was not such a life-or-death proposition. Pirates want to scare you into surrender so they won't have that fight.

It's basically the same sort of psychological warfare the Mongols used: send a message to a city you want to conquer that you'll murder the gently caress out of them if they resist, and then actually follow through on that threat if they do. Doesn't matter that that particular city was warned of your intentions, the next one is likely to throw their gates wide open for you to avoid that fate.

A fun fact is the show creators let the actors devise workout for their characters based on their back stories.

For Tom Hopper he saw his character as a guy who spent the whole day climbing up and down the rigging, hence having the whole massive guns.

Pirates alway preferred getting people to surrender since it was their main way to get replacement crew and also badly needed supplies.

The reason why Charles Vane was hated and feared more than any other captain was because he kept slaughtering captains and crews after they had peacefully surrendered.

Yes. Vane is considered that bad.

Flint is regularly portrayed as an unhinged monster. Vane was that way early on but they mostly tossed it and he's all noble and conflicted now.

I'm really digging Flint's crew's journey. Like...every episode is a mini-adventure, that demonstrates the unique extremes of that lifestyle and those times. Heck, it's frequently overshadowing the main plot story everyone else is taking part of (only thing from there, that I legit loved in this episode, was Woodes Rogers revealing how England's approach is actually quite tame, compared to what Spain will do, should it fail).
