(Yes, that's a self portrait)
Well, it was actually finished on the 30th or thereabouts, and Deep Thingummies only technically come from space, but... Slightly fitting for the theme this month for once?

(An earlier part of the painting process is here, and the big version is on the dA page )

You know that thing where you sleep on your arm funny and when you wake up it's all numb? Yeah that's my whole world right now.

I feel like I did okay on these. I've been drawing every day for about a month now, and I'd like to hear some critiques about where I am and what I could work on if you have the inclination.

^^^From Rzaz. I know the last thread ended before you got an answer and also I'm absolute poo poo at critiques. But, from what I've seen, you've definitely improved throughout the month. Your hands are decent, and you've got a pretty good idea of the way that skin and weight hangs in different poses. Definitely work on the way fabric falls and moves.

I'll put some space art in this spot tonight. Blasting Mr Oizo and Hell Orbs is a good art practice.

Thanks! I do feel more comfortable with the figure, but I was really unsure of what to do with the skirts in my last sketches, so I'll concentrate on that in my practice.

Tried my hand at a space man based on the rocketeer.

Thanks! God I loving hate drawing his hair. Your pigs are cute as hell and I'd love to see them in color.

Yeah hair sucks rear end to paint. This v-day card will prob only be linework since I've got a show coming up and limited time, so I can knock it out super quick...

Actually, gouache or water colors would be faster than colored pencils. We'll see how motivated I feel tomorrow.

I don't usually draw fanart but there ya go.

It's a bit sloppy since I kinda forgot what I was doing until halfway through.

Edit: should've pushed my values.

Edit 2: gouache is super cool and forgiving to work with. Also synthetic watercolor brushes suck, or at least the ones I have suck horribly.

Assuming you mean me, thanks! I've found that even if I don't really know where or how best to draw a line, trying to draw it cleanly and confidently magically makes things look a little better regardless. Although I do lightly sketch things in pencil before taking a pen to them, so that helps too.

Yeah totally. Very rarely can I get the results I'm looking for with just a pen... Solid clean lines. However I can shade like a mofo without a guide. It's weird. I guess light is more fugitive or some poo poo. :iiam:

rzal posted:

The character's pretty solid overall, except the face. It's pretty generic, cartoonishly exaggerated and lacks any real character to it. Honestly, the face is boring and as such your character becomes uninteresting since we look for faces to convey emotions to us. I admit human-type characters aren't really my forte. I can draw people from life really well, but human characters aren't really my thing.

I'd definitely recommend doing some real-life figure drawing and focus on the face. Heck even drawing your own face would work. An exercise we did in my figure drawing class back in college was to do 300 quick portrait studies over the course of the semester. It was tedious as hell, but ultimately super helpful. Not every sketch has to be great, but try to find an interesting focal point and attempt to draw it well.

The first sketch has serious perspective issues with the face. Giving it a medieval European era sort of quality. It's interesting from an art history perspective given her garb, but i highly doubt it was intentional. The face is drawn from a more or less frontal perspective, but her head is skewed to the side. With an angle like that, you'd see the profile of her cheek bones and her temple area at the very least.

Hey thanks for typing all that out. I definitely need more real life drawing. My process has been to lock myself in my room after work and draw a lot. Which is kinda lacking in feedback. How do you guys find people react when you draw them in public? Is the reaction usually positive?

They usually get a little weird or uncomfortable when they realize you're staring at them, but I have yet to experience a single person react negatively to me drawing them in public. The difficult thing with staring people in public is that they move around a lot.

Today's cat! I didn't think this one would work but it's come out really cute, I think.

I also bought a hideous old 'photo-love' annual from 1982 and am going to try and redraw the strips for a challenge. Here is the start of the epic psychodrama, 'Dangerous Image'...

I'm drawing these straight onto the paper with ink, so some of it looks wonky as gently caress, but that is part of the fun for me.

There's a book I've been meaning to get, think it's called "Urban Sketching" and it's all about doing fast sketches in public places. I'm good with people but I suck at buildings and stuff so I've been meaning to sketch in public but I've always worried about people reacting strangely. I might have to suck it up, take a bus to Bellvue and hang out all day and sketch stuff.

I had one guy on a train in NY get in my face and tell me to mind my own business and that I should be ashamed of myself, but it wasn't the guy I was drawing- it was just some weird old man who didn't like me drawing other people.
