A new breed of WARRIOR returns, committed to destroying the enemies of FREEDOM
When ONE angry man, has a world to protect - There is only ONE future – HIS OWN

No-nonsense hero Marlow never shied away from danger or trouble. But now he faces his ULTIMATE challenge. After crash-landing in Central America, he has an industrial evil to defeat whilst bound to an ancient Mayan Death Mask who’s had no-one to talk to for 2000 years. Another day at the office only this time Marlow is PUSHED TO THE LIMIT, his sweetheart has been abducted, the bad guys are making up their own rules and only one man can judge them – and EXECUTE THE SENTENCE.

Fearlessly fighting through Mayan temples and towering valleys, monstrous machinery, nothing, but nothing, will stand in the way of this bad rear end warrior, his girl and the crushing of all opposition.

They told him to go to HELL, he was DEAD ready!!!

With cliffhanger over the top action and cinematic gameplay, Marlow Briggs takes inspiration from the best of blockbuster films, comic book heroes, and action games with its focus on relentless high-octane combat, exotic and danger filled environments and epic set pieces.

• Fight the enemies of FREEDOM with stacks of awesome combos and magic abilities,
• Single handedly destroy HUNDREDS of enemies
• Deploy MIGHTY weapons of destruction
• Leap out of HUGE EXPLOSIONS in slow motion
• Reveal the DEADLY secrets of the Mayans
• Save the ENTIRE planet

Yes, that’s the official blurb. This won’t be a compulsively completionist LP, just a fun romp on normal difficulty, I won't hunt collectibles. There’s no SPOILER POLICY because there’s nothing to be spoilered. There’s only DEATH and EXPLOSIONS.

There’s really not much to add. The game has no concept art that I could find. The only thing worth mentioning are the voice actors.

You might recognize some of them. Marlow Briggs is voiced by Arif S. Kinchen, who you probably know better as Saints Rows’ Pierce Washington. James Hong does the voice of the villain, Heng Long, and you probably know him from…well, a lot of stuff, really. Finally, Steve Blum is the voice of our mask, also known as King Tep.

Seriously, this is like the most cost-effective game on Steam. Shame it's unlikely to turn into a franchise, I'd love to see Marlow blow the poo poo out of more ruins.
The only real problem of it is that the combat is rather shallow but the game is short enough for it not to get old.

Fleve
Nov 5, 2011

Yeah it's one of the best 99 cents I've ever spend during a sale. As far as I could find, the game wasn't even that unsuccessful either. According to internet sources, the budget was $5 million and they grossed $45 million, but there's no way to find out whether those are real numbers. Still, I doubt we'll see another Marlow game. Zootfly, its Slovenian developer, was "acquired in 2013 by a casino equipment manufacturer Interblock", according to wikipedia, which means that....actually I have no idea what that means, it seems like a really weird thing.

The combat could've been done a lot better, it would've really benefited from some diversity. All the combos feel very samey, like you're just swinging your scythe horizontally instead of vertically. Getting good at the game is rather unrewarding because whatever you do, you'll still not do a lot of damage. Regardless, I've got some more stuff already recorded, but after that I'll try and figure out the rest of the scythe combo's as well. I'll at least try to go through all of them before we get to the next weapon. Some of the scythe combo's are just plain poo poo though.

I think it means they're going to be repurposed to develop software for video poker machines or whatever it is the slot jockeys play these days. Seems like a waste.

Personally, the first time I played it I only became mildly decent with one weapon by the time I had finished the game. I'm putting a bit more effort into learning the scythe for this run but it's more about looking pretty rather than dealing damage. Even on hard difficulty there was only one spot where I ended up becoming quite frustrated and having to figure out some proper tactics.

A shameful update, where only a single helicopter joins its 22 brethren in the flock (is flock the correct term for a group of helicopters) we're creating in the afterlife, for a current total of 23. The gods surely require more metal birds in sacrifice.

"The Upside Down Helicopter Ride". Game knows what it is and it isn't ashamed of it, the mask barking instructions was great.

Considering that Long seems to have a purpose (it's probably world domination) in all the oil Tiox drilling he's doing, he's somewhat more sensible than a Captain Planet villain.

Well, we are fighting against an evil industrialist Chinese fellow and his machines and flunkies, who are busy upending the rain-forest by way of fire, steel and probably acid. And we eventually get a pretty colorful supply of magic too.

But Captain Planet generally didn't go around murdering people and bugs with a scythe or by raining down fire from the sky. A pity, would've made him a lot more interesting.

The combat being less impressive is partially my fault cause I stopped using the default scythe later on. For this part I did a bit of off-screen practice and made a little cheat-sheet stickied to the side of my monitor to remind me of the moves. Even though it's not necessary to beat the game, it certainly looks a lot better.

Every weapon has about 15 combos, though most of those are really simple. For notation I'll use the same as the game does: I is a quick attack (or left mouse button), and P is a strong attack (or right mouse button). The basic stuff is just IIIII, PPPP, pressing an attack button while in the air, or holding an attack button (holding I is a dash, holding P is an attempt to beat people into the air). Then every weapon has a few combos which are utter garbage and you're better off avoiding (PIP, loving 'nest of snakes', I keep accidentally using that currently). Finally, there are about 3-5 combo's per weapon which are worth learning, for the current scythe that's IPP (slashes and then a sortof scythe-punch), IIP (slashes finishing in a lot of slashes), PPIP (lots of strong attacks ending in a ground slam) and PII (doesn't look special but is good). I seem to have forgotten IIIP, which also gives a ground slam but faster. Gotta add that to my repertoire.

I made a short-lived attempt at gif'ing all the attacks, but balls to that. Most end up with 250+ frames and to get them down in size they end up looking either poo poo, too small or too fast. So here's a part of the Thousand Fangs combo instead.

The same effect as a gif but quicker and smaller? How many babies do I need to sacrifice to the ancient gods of Webm for that? Although the attacks are probably more fun see during gameplay anyway, I'd love to know how to do the webm thing, there's bound to be other gif'able moments. Especially because my current process to gifs isn't the most seamless experience (find frames in Vdub, encode a small, lower resolution video, import into Photoshop, muck around and make sacrifices until I get something that isn't 5 mb).
