What would be a relatively subtle faux pas within the industry - something that would mark you as being a rank amateur, or as behaving inappropriately? I'm thinking especially about "soft skill" issues that you need to have nailed down tight to actually function within the adult entertainment industry. It seems fairly obvious that performers should never engage in activities that have not been mutually agreed upon, just as it also seems clear that you should not show up to work late and/or blitzed out on coke, but what's something that might be a little less obvious? What is a mundane, but pervasive concern in the industry? As an example of what I'm thinking of, I have a friend who's an FBI agent, and he talks about how nobody realizes how much of his work week is spent having to get out of parking tickets. (He has an official placard for his unmarked car, but it's not always wise to display it, and even when he does do so, traffic cops rarely pay attention to it.) How common is it to encounter people in the industry who are basically hobbyists who show up with a lot of money, but no real professional insight? There are tons of chichi coffee shops, etc. that are run (and run into the ground) by moneyed people who think "oh, I love food, I love serving food, therefore I should run a restaurant" - they are, of course, dead wrong, because liking food is very different from running a business. Surely there also exists the porn equivalent of that? Do performers ever use the term "sex worker" in everyday speech when referring to themselves? How is it working with performers who have limited English-speaking ability? IIRC in an earlier thread, you had talked about working in a Central/Eastern European set, and how that got pretty silly pretty fast when people were trying to communicate in a hodgepodge of English, Slovak, Russian, etc. Do the performers who wend their way to America find work through an agency, who presumably also do some informal translation for them, so as to take care of the business end? Are these performers just here by themselves, Ubering solo from set to set? Ever have anybody storm off set? How often do people accidentally rip huge farts?

Do male and female performers have different post-porn prospects? For example, do women have a harder time moving back into the real world after porn? I've read that a couple of fairly big-name male performers do porn alongside regular jobs, and can't imagine female performers being able to do the same. Given the international nature of porn distribution, why do you think "interracial" in porn is almost exclusively shorthand for "black man, white woman"? Is it a case of there just not being a market for, for example, Asian man/white woman porn, or is it just a case of an American industry reflecting America's own racial hang-ups? On that topic, do black male performers ever get upset as being typecast as thugs? Is there black talent out there crying out for more diverse roles? How much creative freedom is allowed from the performers? Is every scene storyboarded out, or is it more like professional wrestling where performers are given a set of "spots" they need to work to and the rest is worked out on the fly? Sorry, I've got a lot of questions. Porn is a clearer window into human behaviour than almost any other industry and the entire thing is fascinating.

darkpriest posted:However, the organization behind Measure B is now aiming for a state wide ban to be voted on during the ballot in November of this year. The new law is almost draconian. Condoms for sex. No body fluids can be exchanged at all, which would require condoms and dental dams for oral sex and possibly goggles. If that law is really about to pass, you should do a APPROVED BY THE GOVERNMENT PORN CODE parody scene with all actors wearing all the safety gear they can while still technically being able to perform a sex act. Release it for free as a protest. Best case scenario, the law doesn't pass and you've created a new fetish called nanny state porn.

Nooner posted:what is your prospects like if you decided to cross over into non-porn, like that bill passes and all jobs move to like I dont know, Vegas or something and it's relocate or change career paths. I've done it. I've worked on some major movies. Porn offers so much more freedom. I worked on this one movie (200 million dollar budget roughly) and just the size of the production is a spectacle. However, everything is highly controlled and structured (which it has to be). It is somewhat structured like a corporation making a movie. Everyone on set has a very specific role with lots of layers of management and HR. Maybe a smaller or indie film would be a different experience. I also don't have any delusions. I'm fairly decent photographer and editor. But to really get ahead in mainstream I would need to be amazing, especially because everyone is a photographer now. I'm sure some people would have an issue with the porn. There are plenty of mainstream lighting guys/grips etc that work both adult and mainstream.

Tsunemori posted:Can you tell us about the actors you work with? Are they all in it just for the money, and treat it like a professional job? Are there any (bad stereotype here) "sluts" that truly enjoy it regardless? The performers are all pretty into it. Which is what makes them good performers. The guys are definitely not into for only the money. There are so few guys that can do this well and consistently well, that the ones who are able to do it can have steady income for years. There are plenty of wild girls in the industry. Some of them play it up on camera and some of them are truly "nympho's" if you will. Most, though, are in the middle. They aren't prudish about sex, but they aren't super promiscuous. This has to be a generational thing, but I don't get how sex is funny. To me sex should be intense and I'm not talking about just in a rough sense. I don't have any sort of frathouse vibe on my sets or on any set I've worked on. We are there to make a solid product. We have a limited consumer base that still buys that product. So my thought process is to be pros and give them good content. If you're laughing and joking around to much on set, then that carries over to the sex.

symbolic posted:most common political ideology among porn actors? liberals/democrats However in reality they are libertarians but just don't know it. There is irony that conservatives spent decades going after to porn, trying to prevent it by putting producers in prison, so folks in the industry tended to vote democratic. The democrats left adult generally alone. Now a liberal/progressive organization will end up doing more to end porn with the upcoming condom referendum then conservatives ever could.

Do you think that new law you described has a real chance of passing though? Distributors effectively not being able to sell porn in CA bc of lawsuit fears seems like it would piss the public off very quick; we're not exactly Alabama over here.

Dead Precedents posted:Curious what the average pay for various people in a porn make. Writer, producer, director, actors, sound guy, etc. The performers are paid a scene rate. It is a flat rate for that specific scene. An average boy/girl rate for a female performer is 1,000. The average rate for her male counterpart is 500-600. However, like everything certain performers can command higher rates. This is based on popularity and physical appeal for women and for males it is based on size and performing ability. In those situations a female performer can make 1500 to 2000 for b/g and her male counterpart can make 800-1000 The type of sex acts performed also increases that rate. Anal, Double Penetration, Gang Bang etc would all cost significantly more than just a boy/girl scene. However that rate only increases for the female performer. Writers are paid a flat rate for a script. I have no idea what a writer makes. Producers/Directors vary greatly. It depends if you are simply managing a crew and have to pay for a camera operator, a photographer and a lighting tech. There are so many variables. The best directors are typically shooting it themselves and then has a support crew to assist them. Directors are making roughly 400 to 1500 as a day rate. In my current situation that last five years with Evil Angel, I own my product. Which is extremely rare. I get a royalty on everything for the rest of my life.

bon ape tit posted:Can you tell me why so much internet porn is of the anal variety? I swear its like looking for a needle in a haystack sometimes when I want to check out some porn that's not anal Anytime you see lots of content of one specific fetish/niche is because people are paying for it. Anal fans are diehard. They are like nascar fans. Back in the day we used to call them the rain coaters. It's a throwback to a term of wearing those old style raincoats into adult movie theaters so they can jerk off. Anal fans are the serious porn collectors. When a popular girl does anal, it is this huge deal. I can only offer conjecture on why anal is such a big deal. I imagine for most men, they have never experienced it and so it is extremely taboo to them. Honestly, anal sex isn't that amazing. I realize that is like saying Wings is better then the Beatles to an anal fan, but the fantasy has been built up in the consumers minds.
