Well once again that would depend on where you are using a holodeck. Are you starfleet? ship, base, planet? private (which i bet is loving expensive, the power alone...) or a public one? time share? monetary?

What matters is this holodeck would work non stop. It is also insanely complicated and experimental. You would need great holodeck tech support all the time. If you cheaped out or got a bad technician, maybe your database would be sloppy and full of bugs. Starfleet is full of some of the greatest minds and every now and then their entertainment system nearly kills them.

They have to stop their future gaming system from killing them repeatedly

The entire TNG series takes place on a holodeck. No humans have left Earth, or even their own homes, since the technology was invented.

While as frightful as this unfortunately it doesn't fit into the mess that is the Star Trek time line. From an episode I can't remember anything about I know they discovered/stole/bought early holodeck technology in Enterprise. What I am guessing is that the great internet/early holodeck wars occured sometime shortly before ST: TOS. So we are out in the stars but everybody is grounded until they can figure out 'STARFLEET RULES OF INTERNET'

If you watch the finale of Enterprise you learn that the entire series was itself a Holodeck simulation. You're not helping your case.

Yes in a way. Now without googling i don't know the occupant capacity of a starfleet holodeck but I know for sure they can at least handle 5 different sentient, mobile beings. When you "move" away from each other, you essentially are put into a bubble of your experience. Your friend walking away from you stopped being your friend and is simply an image the moment the computer senses a perspective shift past your natural eyesite. Everything around you is simulated as a 3d image until you need to interact with it. Depending on complexity it is a polymorphic forcefield, with a perfect holographic skin over it that creates real material where your body touches.

The computer knows how well your eyes work better than you do.

Could a holodeck create a holodeck where Riker works around a ship pretending he is learning something from someone else but is essentially simply working a job that is from the past rather then live his "retired admiral" life?

Sorry I kind of stumbled on that one, it was meant to be a play on the simulation within a simulation within a role-playing advanced QTE event of an event in the past.

So in your future are the holodecks linked or is each holodeck a simulation individual to it's occupant

Each holodeck simulation is individual to its occupant. Picard is the only "real" person the viewer sees in TNG. A lonely, lonely old man.

Sorry had to leave this hot holodeck chat to go do stuff in real life. Stuff like plumbing....

You are in a simulated building that has a bathroom on one end and a goon at the other end of the building. This building is essentially a hall thats longer than the actual physical holodeck room. You and the goon start in the middle and go opposite directions. At the end you void both real bowels into the simulated toilet and flush. If you then leave the holodeck and the goon comes over to where they percieved you to be. Would they smell your poop? Would it be simulated poop or would the computer store it? or would there be a filter.

Imagine a system that could simply transport the poo poo right out of you.

Kuato posted:

A great question. Would there essentially be a "Moral Lock" similar to conventional Parent/Children computer monitoring programs that flag certain actions. Maybe sex is allowed/expected but thanks to the Great Internet Wars I imagine identity is sacrosanct in the Federation. To use another living sentient federation member in an "unbecoming" simulation is a serious offence. Barkely was creepy but I think he was too smart to trip the alarms. Worf got away with straight up murder simulators.

Starfleet members get so much holodeck time allotted to them. Officers receive more. Of course, if you are an officer, you're sucking off the captain anyway and can just use the Holodeck as much as you like.
It's unlikely you'd even see a holodeck if you didn't join Starfleet.

FooF

I maintain that if a real holodeck were created, progress as a society and as human beings would cease. Guilt-free, no-risk, pleasure-seeking 24/7? No one would leave, well, most wouldn't. The movie Surrogates essentially had this premise.

The real question is: how long could you survive in a holodeck before you couldn't leave? Assuming the holo-food you eat becomes a part of your body, at what point does leaving the holodeck essentially strip you of so much mass that it kills you? Star Trek already had replicators that could make any food you want so it is possible that the computer can somehow distinguish foodstuffs and actually use a built-in replicator to give you "real" food but in this hypothetical holodeck we would be in, such a technology is far beyond our reach.

it's pretty strongly implied barclay was programming his own porn, without making the show not PG-rated anymore. and like other people said quark straight up sells holo-prostitution in ds9, iirc one of his programs was called vulcan love slave :v:

i pretty much just imagine everyone in the federation playing on interstellar subspace DayZ servers all day though.

What really has to suck is when you get the underpowered holodeck. The best ones probably can handle your poop and make you dinner and all that other stuff you seem to absolutely be unable to hold off for even a few minutes of entertainment, but the bad ones probably not only have none of those benefits but also lag, malfunction and have very limited simulation space.
