Pretty sure there was an episode where a Star Trek guy used the holodeck to make and gently caress a holographic version of some woman he "respected".

Or maybe there was more than one episode like that.

Anyway, no, it didn't teach anyone a lesson about being creepy.

Because the TNG crew are as stuffy as stuffy can get

On DS9 they used them much more reasonably: loving holograms or killing holograms.

That's small potatoes compared to trying to use the holodecks to trick a entire government into a war.

I maintain that if a real holodeck were created, progress as a society and as human beings would cease. Guilt-free, no-risk, pleasure-seeking 24/7? No one would leave, well, most wouldn't. The movie Surrogates essentially had this premise.

The real question is: how long could you survive in a holodeck before you couldn't leave? Assuming the holo-food you eat becomes a part of your body, at what point does leaving the holodeck essentially strip you of so much mass that it kills you? Star Trek already had replicators that could make any food you want so it is possible that the computer can somehow distinguish foodstuffs and actually use a built-in replicator to give you "real" food but in this hypothetical holodeck we would be in, such a technology is far beyond our reach.

Well if there's no replicator then we probably haven't moved into a fully communist society so it wouldn't be possible to be in one 24/7 also with no replicator there would be no mass to the holofood as it's made of force fields (even if there was it's still not made of actual foodstuff so there's nothing to actually digest) so it's not a concern. We would at least need people to do the jobs of making food, building, repairing and programming a holodeck.

As far as I am aware without looking it up: The matter in the holodeck only appears solid, it is essentially space balsa wood. When a person touches or handles an object, the computer will then replicate more textural detail at those contact points. Certain "simple things" like dust are actually created and may adhere to clothes.

There is a mortality safe-lock which prevents the computer from inflicting serious injury. Injuries can happen naturally depending on what a person is doing, I think someone hurts their shoulder doing space kayaking on the 'dek. So this computer knows just how much force it is applying to certain areas of your body at all times and has to calculate whether or not what it is currently creating is going to kill the occupant. Somethings it lets certain things happen while preventing others.

This is also a system that can accidentally create artificial life and threaten the ship because Geordi worded a sentence wrong.

Starfleet can deal with this but can you imagine all the horror stories of people who have jail-broke their holodeck?

I am sure there have been many iterations of the holodeck created by different species. I don't remember much from Enterprise other than quarantined hot vulcan.

In Starfleet technology; anything within reach of the user is made "as real as possible" depending on level of interaction. Anything outside of your physical presence simply converts back to an image.

Was it 'hard light' though because I seem to remember Geordi saying 'well we can make shields and force fields, this is the same dang thing just smaller scale.'

It's not really a cup you're picking up, it's a small force field in the shape of a cup. Probably lets you simulate a wide range of textures in that manner, also.

Interacting with yourself on the holodeck would be dumb. You'd still need the internet to push the boundaries of what your perverted mind could imagine otherwise even an orgy with every super-model on earth would get boring after awhile.

Also, the technology needed to actually run the holodeck requires so much energy, only those with access to matter/antimatter reactor cores could use them so any poor shlubs left on earth or whatever would be forever trapped in front of their computer screens or 3D glasses or whatever the gently caress.

1. Think of all the dirty poo poo you would do if you had access to a Starfleet quality holodeck

2. Look at your body now and think of your physical shape (not trying to be insulting, I know I could be in a lot better shape)

3. Try to calculate how quickly you would die if you let yourself have 24/7 access to a Holodeck

It is hard to please one lover in real life. Every super-model on Earth? You say you would get bored but how quickly could you pull this off? Are you injecting yourself with Space Viagra while trying to engage in a physical activity with illusions that never tire?

DS9 had a B plot focused on some guy that wanted to gently caress Kira. Quark spends the rest of the episode trying to trick her into a holosuite/capture her image with a spacecam. At one point he says people want to simulate her exploits in some war and she tells him she knows he's making a pornsim.

Season 2: Ep 19 Manhunt. While trying to avoid getting laid, Picard goes to his Gumshoe program. The detectives secretary gives Picard a cigarette which he puts in his mouth and the bartender lights.

His book might mention smoking in general but I don't think anybook would bother explaining how cigarettes work. There might be cultures that they run into that have something similar but I don't think anyone in the Federation smokes anymore.

So the cigarette was handled by Picard and put near his SenseZone (tm) therefore the computer would try to make it as real as possible. Since it is organic matter that is meant to be burned and inhaled, would the holodeck make an actually cigarette. Would it actually burn or would it simply appear to burn? When Picard inhales would it produce nothing into his lungs or would it create smoke and then immediately remove it when it would threaten his lungs?

Now I can't remember Worf ordering real Klingon food in an episode, but Riker does indeed sample a variety of Klingon dishes while in 10-Forward. I don't know if this replicated or maybe Guinan (sp? Whoopi) special ordered some stuff in for Riker. The key thing is that Riker doesn't know that "Ghak" is supposed to be served live until he is aboard a real klingon ship.

Also the episode with the Space Chupacabras who bring their own live meat aboard because they can't get that on a federation ship.

Once again I am going off knowledge and trying to avoid just looking things up so details may be wrong.

My hypothesis: trying to synthesize a living, organic being is a no-no
