so thanks to this topic i discovered LuxRender and its sketchup plugin (which is the only 3d program aside from 3ds max i can use) and i made this. 20 minutes render time so far would it get any better with time or am i suffering from "not enough light"?

Captain Foo posted:what do you mean by " better " the out-of-focus cube is pretty grainy, as is the floating glass cylinder. is there any hope of this grain going away, or will i have to render everything at 300% scale and downsample?

I'm phone posting so I can't see the details super well nor do I know about your renderers p processes but mine does a rough pass first and then sharpens everything up, echi might be able to help more

you got to think of it like a real camera and real film grain, only the grain isn't just a function of the volume of light but the complexity of that particular pixel. some surfaces resolve very quickly because the equation for that pixel doesn't vary much between rays but complex pixels etc have many many different potential rays so you have to let it resolve many times to come to a good result if it's using the luxrende ui then u can see how many kilo samples per pixel u are at and honestly u usually need at least 1000 to be quite noise free and maybe 2000 or more. 20 minutes isn't that long I have no idea how much control you have over the engine though.. what pathway you using? bias path is very fast (I'm doing this animations with biaspath), bidirectional is great quality but slow as gently caress (no gpu implementing yet). a whole day for a render isn't out of the equation really? and metropolis for the sampler is faster too but that is probably default

oh yeah 20 minutes is nothing for an image with any kind of complexity EPIC LOMARF took maybe 5 minutes, but comm tower took almost eight hours

oh yeah? I wonder what method povray uses. it looks like it uses some kind of global illumination. I'd be surprised if it was unbiased but I'll check it out

symbolic has given me a good idea though, doing some multi cut camera pans of the objects would be neat. I generally always try to make my animations loop but I guess that's quite limiting in some ways? or to be clear its my skill that is quite limited
