quote:

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani said a recent prisoner exchange between Iran and the US went ahead as planned despite calls by Republicans for a delay until US presidential elections.

“In the course of the talks for exchanging prisoners, the Republican rivals of the current US administration who claim to be humanitarians and advocates of human rights sent a message telling us not to release these people (American prisoners) and continue this process (of talks) until the eve of US presidential elections,” Shamkhani said Thursday in an address to a rally held in the central city of Yazd to mark the 37th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution’s victory.

“However” he said “we acted upon our independent resolve and moved the process forward.”

Iran’s move to exchange prisoners was based on the country’s humanitarian approach and was made in accordance with ensuring the country’s interests and securing the release of Iranian citizens in the US, he added.

Shamkhani underlined that on the issue of prisoner swap, Iran proved that it is not influenced by any foreign or domestic pressure but acts against spies and infiltrators decisively.

Iran on January 16 released four prisoners with dual citizenship based on a decision by the country’s Supreme National Security Council within the framework of a prisoner swap.

Amir Mirzaee Hekmati, Jason Rezaian, Saeed Abedini, and Nosratollah Khosravi who hold US citizenship were among the released prisoners.

On the same day, 7 Iranian nationals imprisoned in US jails were released as per the prisoner swap.

The release of the inmates came hours before the official start of a nuclear deal finalized by Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) back in July 2015.

With the enforcement of the deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), all nuclear-related anti-Iran sanction were terminated.

As Talking Points Memo points out, the media org that published this is essentially controlled by the Iranian Government, but it would be pretty unlikely for them to fabricate a quote from a high-ranking member of the government. So, that's sure a thing.

So the response from the right is "the Iranian Government is lying, then."

One of the people imprisoned was a Washington Post reporter. If there's any meat to this at all the media isn't going to let it drop. There's probably also a limited number of people it could have been.

Didn't Congressional Republicans send a letter to Iran telling them not to accept the nuclear deal, with a strong insinuation that the deal would not be honored by a Repub president? I'm not surprised at all.

My understanding was that he was "caught" but they didn't pursue it because the evidence was a recording the NSA made from inside the North Vietnamese camp. They didn't want to reveal they had been spying on basically everything that went on.

I'm skeptical mostly because this is a turd telling another turd that it stinks. I wouldn't put it past the GOP to try and delay hostage release for political points but I also wouldn't put it past Iranian state television to make poo poo up to hurt the by-far more hawkish side in the US election.

It's feasible that this is just Iran trying to tarnish the Republican party because Iran doesn't want a party hostile to it in power over here, so this will amount to nothing unless they release quotes with names attached.

Given Republican stances toward Iran, undermining Republican presidential campaigns is drat good reason to fabricate that quote.

If hard evidence were to come out, like irrefutable "Tom Cotton skyping with Iran saying 'hold onto those Americans in your deathcamp prisons until later'" evidence, there would be an immediate move to censure that senator/rep/etc, charges would be brought up instantly, and there would be a lot of speculation on whether the death penalty is appropriate.

Anything that gives them 1% plausible deniability ("that phone call is forged!" "that telex is fake!"), will go nowhere.
