Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia died of apparent natural causes Saturday on a luxury resort in West Texas, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

Scalia, 79, was a guest at the Cibolo Creek Ranch, a resort in the Big Bend region south of Marfa, the paper reported.

According to a report, Scalia, an associate justice, arrived at the ranch on Friday and attended a private party with about 40 people. When he did not appear for breakfast, a person associated with the ranch went to his room and found a body.

The U.S. Marshal Service, the Presidio County sheriff and the FBI were involved in the investigation, the paper reported.

A federal official who asked not to be named told the paper there was no evidence of foul play and it appeared that Scalia died of natural causes.

Scalia was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1986 by President Ronald Reagan.

This is a big, big deal. The Supreme Court is now split evenly 4-4, and there is probably a better chance of Donald Trump flashing his dick on national TV (actually, not probably, I wouldn't actually be surprised if that happened) than there is of the Senate confirming anyone Obama nominates. Which means this election is about to explicitly be about "who gets control of the Supreme Court".

It was already an undercurrent in this election cycle with RBG's age, but this is going to bring it front and center.

His death is probably gonna save public unions, too.

I'm assuming it'll be a 4-4 tie now, with the lower court ruling being in favor of people forced into paying dues.

They can run out the clock, yes.

The spokesman for the head of Senate Judiciary already said there's a "less than zero percent chance" that Obama nominates his replacement.

The question is what would stop them? The only possible reason Republicans in the Senate would have to move is that there are enough Republicans in vulnerable seats in 2016 that the total kneejerk opposition will be politically damaging enough to them to bring them around eventually.

On the other hand, the Roberts court has so strongly embraced right-wing judicial activism, which is hugely important to a party establishment that knows it will never pass most of its agenda democratically, that Republicans will be absolutely loathe to give up control of the court.

Yes. They don't even have to give a nominee a vote, but they'll probably just vote them down on a party-line vote to stick it to Obama.

PLEASE DO NOT BACKSEAT MODERATE
I don't know what the executive plan is for trying to get this nomination through in less than a year...but if it were me, I'd be hammering the media every single day about how republicans are on purpose holding up a significant nomination solely because they hope to win the election. I know we won't get a progressive judge, but at least a moderate one would be a vast improvement over the court that gave us Citizens United.. Hopefully it can get done in time or Sanders/Clinton win the election..

It also (mostly) quashes the specter of Evenwel v. Abbott completely and utterly loving Dems from winning another election for eternity, so that's something. The lower courts already sided against Evenwel, so if if the court splits 4-4 on it come June it'll defer to the lower court ruling.
