Yeah, the Eldar solar sailing movement is something I'd imagine would take time to implement, not to mention their mainly forward-firing guns would take time to test. The game's not officially out for a few weeks though, so there's still time for them to fine-tune things.

Yeah, balance for Eldar would likely be a pretty fine line with how fragile their ships are. Make them too mobile and they're basically untouchable, make them not mobile enough and they'll just get ground down.

But then again, it could just be a simple executive decision. Even close to release, cutting out a portion of the game for a demo/beta and polishing it up for public consumption still takes some time and effort that could be used elsewhere. So they might just have decided to scale down the beta to have more resources available for polishing the final product.

I think maneuverability should be the Eldar's main weapon, even moreso than their pulsar lances or whatever- while Eldar are meant to be fragile, their speed, agility and shadow fields should mean that a good Eldar player wouldn;t be getting hit in the first place.

If I were them I'd be having a hard look at the eldar MMS fan rules for an idea of what it takes to make them work right when they have to take return fire.

I don't know if orks and eldar will be added in later, but if they are it gives a chance for more publicity bursts to maintain excitement into release, and to get a good grasp on whether something's messed up in the basic case without the complications of orks and eldar.

Oy, its da Orkyiest Ork!

Also, I will be streaming myself playing BFGA tonight, around 6 pm EST until maybe 9 pm EST or whenever. I haven't streamed since the first time I streamed, two or three years ago for the Word of Lowtax first anniversary blowout party.

Nothing fancy, just the game and my voice.

Yeah, I think I will too, wonder what they'll have available. I'll also probably record a quick video at high quality to put on YouTube to show off the graphics. May as well get use out of my ridiculous setup.

I'll also let you humiliate me live if you want, although I hope there's something more than 1v1s and bot fights.

In the tabletop an Eldar player can avoid getting hit because they can do their "move in - fire - move out" in their turn with the enemy fleet not doing anything. But in a RTS with the two fleets able to fire simultaneously, the Eldar's targets would get plenty of opportunities for return fire, except if the eldars are coming from behind. That's a new can of worms to balance compared to the tabletop. Either hiding in the tailpipe is the only viable strategy, or you have to make the Eldar fleet somehow able to withstand return fire for a short time. Some sort of dodge skill on cooldown maybe.

Given how the only hitscan weapons are lances and nova cannons, the eldar ships should have ample opportunities to dodge incoming fire.

The devs are saying that they are going to wipe after the beta, so that it's "fair for people playing at release". Apparently there's some persistent advancement mechanic in multiplayer. I guess it's your admiral level and your ship customizations.

So you probably start off with just a few light cruisers at level 1, and then up from there.

Basically World of Warships as a space RTS.

I'll find out in 3 - 4 hours when I head home!

Right now there's a three mission long tutorial, random battles against bots, and multiplayer. So far I've only seen straight cruiser-action deathmatch in multiplayer. There are buttons for both 1vs1 as well as 2vs2 battles (including arranged battles), though as of right now there's only 1vs1 available for me. Dunno if that's locked in for the duration of the beta or just a matter of me not having leveled up yet.

Absolutely true. Just managed to eke out a win by doing a special-order 180 and hitting the enemy with a minimum range nova cannon shot, instantly destroying two ships with it. :getin:

I enjoyed my time with the game so far. Multiplayer starts small with light cruisers and escorts and rewards you with bigger ship slots as you move up. Game is a bit crashy, as noted, but Im willing to chalk that up to beta access.

The single player is criminally short with little to no details as to what you'll actually get to do, but it reads very XCOM like so far, so here's hoping it branches out.

I'll try and work up some gifs from the stream, in the meantime you can watch it, without my nerdy voice talking over footage, here:
