Girl got trashed in the sauna of a four-star hotel in Beijing on the company’s dime.) My sister was lucky to have a connection that got her in the door for that job—but she also made her own luck by working hard (like creating content more substantial than a cutesy Twitter account), being smart, accumulating experience, and promoting herself in a thoughtful and appealing manner.

Overall a much better jobs than retail, food service, call center, or barista options you get out of highschool or with a 4 year degree in a 'useless' field.

What is the reality is that there's more STEM based jobs than the other. They don't all pay great but you have a better chance of getting a job that isn't minimum wage coffee maker.

It's going to depend on what sector of the work force you're talking about. I work for the county, and we don't really need that many accountants or chemical engineers: we need people to deal with clients. We need people with backgrounds in Finance more than STEM fields, and we need people with customer service experience and some sort of college education, more than we need people with Accounting degrees. My department's stretched to its limit, and I don't even want to think about how overworked the people in Medicare are going to be as the baby boomers continue aging and living forever.

Are they impressed because you double-majored, or are they specifically in need of someone with a degree in Physics? Because that's where I lose the plot: what do you do with a BS in Physics? Or Biology? I know there's a need for people with degrees in Science, but I've always seen ads looking for people in specific fields, like Food Science. The only people I know with Science degrees all pursued graduate degrees of some sort, either to supplement their BS with a Master's in a related field, or to earn a Ph.D.

Sales and networking, same as it's always been. Contracts don't go to who does it best, they go to who has the best relationship.

Thats what I do. My teacher in high school 20 years ago told me to get into automation stuff because he saw the winds. The worst is when I have the workers perform their task while I program away to mimic it. Making them train their replacement basically.

Or I'll study them for a few hours. Scribbling away on a piece of paper about how they twist something this way, or hit things just so to make it pop together. I'll make conversation. Ask them about their family. Make them like me so they'll tell me the little tricks they use to do their boring inane job.

Then a few weeks later I show up with a big crate and out pops their replacement

I'm just loving with you I wish it was that easy.

There isn't really a need for B.sc graduates where I live (Australia), and they have job prospects on par with Arts graduates. The whole STEM degree = $, only applies to a subset, and only when there is actually demand for them.

The reason why she is becoming the voice because they can relate to a person who is Caucasian and female wanting more than their education is worth wanting to make a living doing what they already do as their hobby. It's the same thing as when dudes think they can make a living lets playing. It related to them more than all the middle aged and different background men who lost their jobs and health due to the same trends cause it isn't something they can photoshop their own face onto. It's not so much about her and her being screwed over more so the fear that they will be screwed over too thus the entire process becomes a madturbatory cry in the wind. Sort of how poor republicans tend to have on any tax or economic restraint on the wealthy cause they think they will be noticed in their middle management job and strike rich or win the lottery and it will then affect them too.

Just wait a bit and some other person will say or do something stupid and everyone will perch that person over their #collectiveshouldersofsolidarity until the next little guy trend.

In grades 11 & 12 courses are either University (Calculus, Advanced Functions, Stats) College (Data Management, Mathematics for College Technology) or Workplace (I don't even know what they called these courses). The University courses are the preferred ones and the ones people are encouraged to take.

Stretched to the limit here too. We're at about half of what the feds say we should have as a staff for the size of the population we service but management isn't going to do anything until we get a surprise program review and find out they should have been listening to us when they start getting hit with fines, since you can only do so much when you're understaffed for at least over a decade.

A physics degree shows that your competent in math and building models. Every sector of engineering is built upon physics and models so it would be rather easy to turn a physics degree into an engineering job with a little networking or the proper extra curricular activities. Math is similar although it would probably apply more in the software industry. From a quick google it appears that median wages for Physics grads is actually higher than EE and math had a similar pay rate.

I can't give much input on stuff like biology or other life science degrees.

I have a BS in physics and somehow managed to Shanghai a decent career out of it. It's not easy and I'm definitely in the minority. Just about everybody I graduated with either went straight to grad school or slummed around doing programming gigs until they went to grad school. Most of those MS and PhDs are now just back writing code so I'm not sure if it did them any good.

edit: That said (RE: code) what with the new hip thing being big data analysis some of those physics types have been making big stacks doing that.

Sales takes some skills. You can easily tell who isn't good at it because they get a job as a salesman paid on commission, can't make any sales to anyone other than friends/family, then tells everyone the company is a bunch of scammers.

I'm also referring to real sales where you actually have to put forth some form of effort and not the kind of sales where you work in a cell phone store and the people coming in to buy something are considered your hot lead.

Look, everyone sells. You sell, your mom sells, and a 7 year old kids sells.

You are selling when you convince your GF to go watch Deadpool with you. You are selling when you try to get out of a speeding ticket. That 7/11 clerk is selling when he tells you about 2 cokes for $2. Your nephew is selling when he tells you about his day at school.

We all sell. If you can talk to other people, you can sell.
