Spending billions of dollars and making a massive athletics complex that will be abandoned afterwards is only really attractive if you're looking for an opportunity to try and trick the world into thinking that your country isn't a filthy cesspit run by despots.

The only issue I remember with the London Olympics was that it didn't bring the promised level of tourists. Apparently the other end of London was a ghost town. Also their opening ceremony was garbage compared to China

The IOC should just buy Greece and hold the Olympics every year in Athens and make it some big historic thing. The should also make the athletes compete in the nude again.

The problem is the IOC's list of demands and the tendency for the host city/country to lose their drat minds. How many Olympic sports actually require involved infrastructure or support? Some dudes need to throw some stuff while others are running around them. Add a hill and a creek and you are pretty much half way there. Wild Orchid gets me rock hard.

I know Toronto withdrew it's bid once the IOC showed up and basically demanded bribes to even consider them. It's basically illegal to host the Olympics now in most western countries because there are just layers of corruption. It tells you a lot about the countries that do host it. IIRC, the winter olympics is a different organization and isn't as corrupt? Or was that just excuses Vancouver made for itself?

RatHat posted:Why do they even change the location every time anyway? Wouldn't it make more sense to build a really nice stadium in a convenient place and then reuse it every 4 years? Is the tourism it brings in really that big a deal? Well I think the idea is that since it's a worldwide event, that each country contribute by being a host and showing off their culture or whatever. Of course, this was more viable 100 years ago when it was a much smaller thing and countries didn't spend billions of dollars building poo poo specifically and only to be used for this one thing. Do they even reuse the same buildings / stadiums in cases where a city has hosted more than once? It would probably make more sense to have one big stadium / Olympic village / whatever in one place on each continent (or whatever makes sense based on distance) that can be more easily maintained, and then just rotate through them every time. But then again, it would also make more sense if the IOC were the one paying for this poo poo too.

also, since the olympics started stadium building has transformed from a form of grand public works, to something that is EXCLUSIVELY used as a way to steal money and give it to a small handful of private citizens.
