Via Obscure, the Hidden Street

Via Obscura is a bit of a mystery. Magi had not even realized the regio existed for a very long time. A few years ago, however, the Redcaps finally discovered how to reliably enter the place and realized how vast it truly was. Amalfi is a city with a strong Divine aura...however, at any time in which the moon can be seen in the sky, day or night, there is a street that does not exist. It can be entered by passing through any arch in the city...but only so long as a living flower is clutched in hand. Via Obscura, named for the regio, was settled and built up, as the REdcaps brought in other magi to explore and to help those who had become trapped within, unable to escape. The street is its own community and has been since before the covenant was settled, thanks to the dragon living in the library and the people who have lived there for some time. To exit requires the same trick, but can exit through any arch in the city, save those on cathedral grounds. The covenant, now having adapted the strange buildings within to their own usage, has begin to sell produce and work with the local wine sellers to support themselves, having allied with Bishop Bartolomeo in order to move through the city without too many problems.

However, not all is perfect. The gardens purchased within the city to serve as the main access once belonged to the cathedral, and the recent return of saintly relics to the cathedral has led to a revival of the garden's status as a pilgrimage site, as it has now bloomed in beautiful roses that never seem to fade. This means many holy pilgrims pass through the area...and that Amalfi in general and the covenant in particular have drawn the interest of a potent demon, whose interest lies not only in corrupting the city but in testing the power of those who use a hiding place it wants to control. This was not expected. What was expected was the merchants who gather in the gardens each year, on their way out of Italy. They stay for the winter, plying their wares and occasionally causing problems.

Perhaps more troublesome is that it's still possible to wander into the covenant by accident. While supernatural creatures are largely kept out by the Aegis, it is simply impossible to guard every entrance that might exist within the city - to say nothing of the gate deeper within the regio, where the 'street' would exit the city. It's still unclear where it is opened from, but occasionally, the gateway will open and strange creatures will emerge. It appears to be one-way, as all attempts to exit through it have ended up entering the regio from the opposite end. Between them and the greedy coming to eye the wines that the covenant's allies have been producing, there is more trouble than was expected.

And that is to say nothing of the politics! For their aid in founding the covenant, favors are owed to the covenants Harco, Cartago and Sodalitatis Aeternitas. It's not all bad, though. The covenant's church ally has proven useful already in ordering minor changes in church maintenance that have proven quite useful to some other covenants. Favors are owed by Literatus, Vardian's Tomb amd the Grey Senate.

Cattedrale di Saint'Andrea

Amalfi Cathedral (Italian: Cattedrale di Sant'Andrea/Duomo di Amalfi) is a 9th-century Roman Catholic structure in the Piazza del Duomo, Amalfi, Italy. It is dedicated to the Apostle Saint Andrew. It was built next to an older basilica built on the ruins of a Roman temple. Parts of the temple rmeain sealed off after the church was built but yet unexplored. In 1206, the remains of Saint Andrew were brought to Amalfi from Constantinople after the Fourth Crusade by the Cardinal Peter of Capua, who died eight years later. In 1208, the crypt was completed and the relics enshrined within. The bones issue forth manna in times of famine, to feed the people. The local diocese has traditionally protected the Jews of Amalfi from persecution, and while this does mean some trouble occasionally, the Jews also support the Bishop politically.

Spring, 1220

Spring, at last, has come. The covenant has finally been completed, with all of the work to move into the regio finished. The freehold outside has been acquired, though the pilgrims remain a minor annoyance. The interior has been secured as much as is practical, though with the regio as it is it's impossible to totally secure. The boundaries, at least, have been paced and guarded with the Aegis of the Hearth. Now, the Council will meet for the first time in earnest. Amalfi, around you, bustles with the activity of any city. The Divine is stronger than you might like outside your ome, but the local Church has smiled on you, so it is best not to complain about their power. Within the covenant, at least, your magic holds sway.

The Cathedral is easy to see from almost anywhere in the city - certainly from near the freehold to the covenant. It is busy at all hours, taking care of the pilgrims, the locals and the business of priesthood. The chantry of the cathedral holds masses practically daily for mourning. The sound of bells will be a constant part of life here.

Please describe for me your lab if you have a magus!

The Council consists of all magi, plus the Redcap. If you want to put anyone else on the ruling Council, bring it up for Council discussion and vote. Topics that the Council will need to consider:
1. Vis allocation. You have a number of enchanters who are going to want access.
2. Membership and rights, as noted above. Do you put the dragon on the council? How about a mundane representantive?

Lastly, please tell me about your plans for the Spring for Magus and Companion.

Giovanni di Miscellanea's laboratory is a warm and comfortable place. The lab is a bit disheveled in the most calculated way - where it's not REALLY disheveled but it sure looks like it if you don't understand Gio's insane personal filing system. Pages of a spare copy of The Aeneid are scattered around the room, giving it an extremely lived-in feeling. A few braziers burning incense hang suspended from the ceiling. A fireplace burns more-or-less 'round the clock. Tables are covered in little oddities and knick-knacks. Assorted tools of all stripe hang off the back wall, next to the fireplace. On the walls of the lab are notes and more pieces of The Aeneid, underlined and highlighted and marked up with all manner of arcane and literary madness. A beautiful red chair sits in the center of a small pentagram, in the corner, next to a bookshelf. His private copy of the Aeneid is buried strategically among the books, and never leaves the lab, nor comes out when people are visiting.

Giovanni needs a lot of vis. His specialty is a vis-hog even compared to regular enchanting. However, in exchange for that vis, Giovanni is capable of making some extraordinarily useful items. He particularly lobbies for a larger regular allowance of vis so he can experiment with magical items of broad use to the Covenant as well as his own personal needs.

He is staunchly against the dragon having a say on the Council, as well as non-Magi, on the grounds that the Covenant is Hermetic and the others are reaping the benefits of Wizardry, and so should be content with that, rather than trying to steer Wizardry. Giovanni may also be a bit against this because, were he not a Hermetic, he very much doubts that HE'D get a vote, and he feels that holding everyone to the same standard is fairer than making exceptions.

Giovanni is willing to sell his vote in exchange for supporting his regular vis allowance; in the end, his feelings are not so great that they cannot be bought. If the dragon demands his books in exchange for access to the library his willingness to deal with it will rapidly disappear, as "a creature that provides nothing and demands of wizards deserves no say in the affairs of wizards." (Giovanni does not consider guard duty "productive".) If the dragon is willing to find, acquire, or provide a service (or vis) to the Covenant, that, too, will loosen up.

Spring for Giovanni is research time. Because of shenanigans, Giovanni is going to be locked up in his lab for the next year researching the spells on his sheet.

Spring for Ambrogio is a time to latch onto some unfortunate grog or hero and compel them towards greatness. To that end, Ambrogio goes looking for someone to Wizard Mentor, because that's what wizards do. Will it be a grog? Fulgrencio? An unfortunate mortal beyond the confines of the city? Who knows! Ambrogio offers prophecies of chosen-ness and greatness, eagerly spinning tales of glory, sprinkled with a bit of Definitely Real Wizard Magic to make his vict, er, chosen great ones slightly more pliable. Wizarding, amirite guys?

Ambrogio lobbies fiercely for a seat on the Wizard Council, as he is a Wizard, but Giovanni opposes this, as Ambrogio is not Hermetic even if he is some sort of insane hedge wizard or something.

(Ambrogio is a Faerie)

I only take special jobs, if you know what I mean.
Bruna is quick to offer services to a magi willing to prepare an age-slowing ritual for her, as that's one of the reasons she decided to become a part of the covenant. She doesn't particularly care about voting on the council, she's already benefiting greatly from the covenant in more ways than one. As she waits for a spell to be prepared she'll offer her services to the Amalfi Cathedral for her own reasons, although she would be open to serving as a mediary between the covenant and mundanes in Amalfi if it will help.

Lupenas will be keeping his right to vote on this council close to his chest, but won't exercise it unless he feels it's "important" whatever that means. He's hard to figure out. Either way he'll be busy with his redcap duties during the spring, considering the weather should be favorable for it. With respect to voting, Lupenas feels putting the dragon on the council could be a good thing. She exercises power over just about all the books so knowing her opinions and views on things can only be good for the covenant, he reckons.

Beatrice is largely indifferent towards the dragon's presence, but doesn't see why the dragon should have a seat on the council for much the same reasons as Giovanni, although a good argument might sway her. The hedge wizard, on the other hand, is not Hermetic and unless he is willing to take up Hermetic practices and training (and undergo a proper apprenticeship, etc) she is firmly against him receiving a seat. She is all for vis being distributed as needed by the enchanters, as long as redistribution for when others have projects on the go is on the table. She is amenable to helping Bruna with an age-slowing ritual in exchange for services to be determined. Apart from that she plans to spend the spring puttering around her lab reading.

Her lab is a mess of papers, books, and various bones and other somewhat grisly accoutrements, and always slightly chilly, even in the summer. It is festooned in dark curtains and tapestries, and despite numerous candles is always dimly lit.

Mariel intends to spend the spring working to support her lifestyle. This involves some petty theft and general scams, supplemented by light labor where needed. She's not at all interested in gaining a seat on the council, but is interested in any help or insight anyone can provide towards removing her curse of lycanthropy.

Tammaro registers a vote of no, but it's not really clear whether he especially cares about it... it's possible he's just voting no to see if anyone will offer him favors or other incentives to vote yes... and then he disappears into his lab for most of the rest of the season, muttering about needing to practice his art. He's got his own covenant and his own lab now, and is eager to make his own name for himself.

Tammaro's lab doubles as a blacksmith workshop, with functioning forge and other equipment. The heat and noise make it largely unpleasant to be in for anyone except the fire-immune Tammaro himself, which suits him just fine.

Towards the end of the season he emerges, bearing forth his first creation: the Lamp of the Spark.

Lamp of the Spark: permanent item, unlimited uses per day, range audible, target individual, duration momentary. Effect: Starts a fire (creo ignem) at the target location that burns anything at least as flammable as damp wood or leather, inclusive. In addition, the fire will not spread to areas or objects that were not desired to be burned by the user of the item (this can be ignored if you want the fire to just spread normally). Trigger: Touching two specific parts of the lamp with forefinger and thumb.

Difficulty: 50. Lab total: 49. Experimental boost: +6, and granted side effect: major benefit. The side effect is how I got the 'controlled burn' part, otherwise this was just going to be an item that could start fires at range on damp wood. I'm told this is pretty drat good, especially for something that's a minor magical item.

I'll post my companion's actions and other decisions later on this weekend.

Paulio of Jerbiton's laboratory is something of a mess. An organized mess, full of abandoned little art projects that litters through his well-aired room, with a nice view upon a part of the regio. Inside, he keeps his growing and extensive amount of books, his notes, filled to the brim with doodles and diagrams. It is well-lit, separated in several rooms, with some space to grow when the fancy strikes him -- or when he have a project to work on. It is rather bare at the moment, as he just moved in, but with time, it will take on some lovely decorations whenever Paulio decides he have time between projects. The wizard himself is on the thin side, rather short, but managing to keep healthy with thin facial traits, often relaxed, often more smiling in a content, distant manner. He often is lost in his thoughts, drawing in his books or other medium, when he is not talking with the mundane members of the covenant. He is a friendly, outgoing, young man. Even if his head is often in the clouds, far from worries.

On the matter of the council, the young wizard have little problems with allowing the Dragon on the council seat, in matters that concerns the covenant itself. On grander, hermetic political matters, or matter between wizards, he feels that there is no reason for her to use her vote on these particular cases. In either option, vote or no, her opinion is likely to be sought. She is likely to have some wisdom on the various matters to come on the future that are at least, worth considering, he is very certain. Not that he THINKS horrible things will happen, oh no. Paulio have a very bright outlook of the days ahead! It just never hurts to be prudent. Preventing bad things is simply good, clean, nice senses.

As for the 'wizard', Ambrogio, Paulio is polite in his comments that, no, perhaps he should not have a vote that, well, it's simply his opinion on the matter.

Paulio also brings a proposal to the table, as far Vis spending is concerned: Setting aside a certain amount of the Vis income per year for a 'Special Project' reserve. He will explain, between himself, Giovanni and Tammaro, they are crafters and inventors. Their projects can be very vis-intensive, at times. However, by allowing an amount to be set aside for a communal pool to be used on projects that will benefit the Covenant's directly. It will be controlled by Giovanni, Tammaro and himself, explicitly for crafting purposes. Paulio feels that this will prevent a lot of headaches in the future, as well as securing the increasing prosperity of their new homes.

As for action for Spring, he will read Power over Power, as well as make the suggestion that they secure a series of Primer books on the Arts as soon as possible, such a Primer on Animal.

Similarly, he will request that some of our current books in stock that are not protected should be copied by our scribes, for this very purpose.

The companion will similarly be made during the weekend.

Aristide takes up residence in what he quickly turns into a library. His laboratory is more of a repository than anything else. Nearly all the space therein is set aside for the storage of texts and things he finds on his travels. What remains is a space for studying, and a space for examining things - a table outfitted with all manner of strange tools and glassware. This is not a particularly dangerous laboratory; in the little time he will spend there, Aristide will mostly be quietly doing research, or writing down what he's learned recently.

As for voting, Aristide stomachs his distaste of politics long enough to agree that, provided a sufficiently convincing argument, he wouldn't have a problem with the dragon having a voice on the council for purely non-Hermetic affairs, as Paulio has suggested. He also finds the idea of setting aside a pool of vis for the crafters to be an agreeable one. On the other hand, he opposes allowing Ambrogio to have a seat on the council.

For Spring, Aristide wishes to familiarize himself with the history of Amalfi. If he can do so by reading the Diocese Register, he'll do that; if not, he'll hit the streets and simply start asking questions.

Fulgencio will not seek a seat on the council, as he is the covenant's employee and has no desire to set down roots in Amalfi. The Shining Legion has established a headquarters in a building down the street from their favorite tavern. This serves as their laboratory for developing new and better ways of punching.

For Spring, Fulgencio will maintain his lifestyle by doing his mercenary thing. This may well bring him to the attention of Ambrogio.

Maristela resides in a rather drafty place up high in the covenant's buildings, where she has several balconies for her to take her observations from multiple directions. There is a cozy space inside, with a small stove for her to keep warm along with a huge range of samples of stone and her various charts and astronomical impedimentia. She also keeps some space near the stables, though this is less personal.

She is completely apathetic about whether or not there's a dragon on the council. If people are deadlocked she unironically proposes prayer.

Her plan is to bone up on the Ars... BONisagi, ha ha ha! She is also likely going to lead people in the hearth ritual. She does like Paulio's idea, as well as this crafting vis business.

Bartolomeo supports his lifestyle with a sermon that reads thus:

quote:

Today, my children, I want to talk to you about lust. Now I see that this is a topic that is near and dear to the hearts of all of you, which is exactly why we must speak against it.

Lust isn't just coveting your neighbor's wife, or even his rear end... nor even, indeed, the rear end of his wife. Lust is the uncontrolled desire for something in this world. It can be money. It can be fame. It can be fine food, power over others, wine... lust takes a thousand different forms.

When I put it like that, you see lust filling the world, don't you? In fact, you might just think that Lust is the natural state of affairs. Who doesn't want things? If you don't eat for three days, isn't that lust for a hot bowl of porridge natural, healthy, even wholesome?

Well let me tell you, folks, that this is a lust that comes from a real lack. The body needs food, it needs water, it needs to stay warm or cool... This is the right kind of desire, and it isn't uncontrolled, either. A man who eats porridge to satisfy his hunger is wise. A man who eats a fine roast to do so? Well, now, we're getting a little shady here; but some meat and some milk betides are wholesome things to eat.

But the man who eats a fine roast every single night? Not because he's ill - or it's a feast day - or because he has to keep up the strength of his arm, like a soldier or a knight, but because he has the coin for it? Or because he's gotten that meat from somewhere else? That man is lusting for that succulent beef, and it is that man who is consumed by lust.

What's the cure? The cure is CHASTITY.

Chastity isn't just what you want your wife folks to have when you go on Crusade. Chastity is a way you have to live. The moderation of every one of those cravings, always and eternally looking towards the perfect life of, say it with me, JESUS THE CHRIST as your model for the way in which you walk in this day today.

How can we overcome Lust? Through a prayerful spirit. Through devotion to the Church. Through fulfilling what we need to do and keeping ourselves occupied in a good and dedicated way. Because when we're filled full of the word of Christ and the sacred Eucharist, there is no room for Lust to get inside.

And if Lust can't GET INSIDE... Well, that's Lust's problem, not yours.

Thank you, and may God bless you all.

Fiorenza doesn't live on the covenant grounds, but she has a family residence in the city not too far from it, as well as close to her financial cartel's headquarters. It is also probably a nicer place to stay than some extradimensional regio stuffed into a corner of a cathedral.

She has no desire (or right, really, being a mundane human) to be on the covenant council, but she does take over one of the unused rooms to serve as her on-site office for whatever covenant-related business she's involved with.

This spring, she spends most of the season seeing to her own affairs, as well as keeping a metaphorical ear to the ground for threats to her cartel or the covenant.

Council Matters

In the final voting, Ambrogio is firmly denied a seat on the Council. The votes over whether the dragon should have one are more heated, but eventually, the nay-sayers win the vote, if barely, on the basis of the fact that no one has gone out of their way to bribe any of them. Instead, she is granted a small vis salary to ensure her survival.

The covenant declares that one half of all vis shall be set aside for use in crafting and enchanting projects as required. The other half will remain stored for emergencies and use in spellcasting, familiar binding and all the other uses to which magi who do not focus heavily on enchantment require, as well as to pay the 'salary' of Annamaria.

Giovanni

Giovanni locks himself in the lab and does research. He studies the Aeneid for secrets and begins to experiment with his theories in the lab, focusing on understanding the underlying principles of the magic within. He makes excellent progress in his work.

Giovanni gains 17 XP to spend on his Rites and 2 XP in one of Virgilian Theory or one of his Schools.

Bruna

Bruna spends her season working with the Cathedral, guarding pilgrims and doing her best to help out around the place. She is paid decently for her work, and in general is well-liked. The locals are talkative, and she hears many stories. The children are taught to avoid the docks or they'll be stolen and eaten by the green-fanged monster that lives beneath them (though if this is more than a cautionary tale, well, no children have been stolen and eaten in recent memory). The miracles of pilgrimage, of course - spontaneous cures of blindness or lameness, kind strangers who provide food to the hungry, that kind of thing. If Bruna's father has his hand in anything right now, she cannot tell.

Bruna gets 2 XP in either Amalfi Lore or Church Lore.

Beatrice

Beatrice agrees to help Bruna with a longevity ritual when it becomes required. This is still a few years off, but best to plan early and decide what season to set aside for the work. In the meantime, she selects a book from the library - Scipio's Words of Life and Death, by the famous German archmagus and war-wizard. It is an intriguing if dense tome, and even with her study skills, she cannot exhaust it quickly. Scipio's prose is oblique, and many of his references and allusions require checking and further study to understand. The book will remain fruitful for some time.

Beatrice gets 12 Corpus XP from study.

Tammaro

Tammaro secludes himself in his laboratory with a supply of iron. The hammering is intense and the heat is moreso. He never minds that, of course. He devotes himself to his labors, preparing his first creation since the masterpiece that earned him his exit from apprenticeship. (His parens kept that for herself, of course.) He labors all season, emerging only to eat, vote and sleep. The experiments he performs to master the flame are arduous, and would burn any lesser man - but when he emerges, come summer, it is with an item of power, and notes on how to recreate it. The Lamp of the Spark is a mighty item, able to light fires easily, and even he cannot explain the stroke of genius that went into its creation, allowing it to keep the fires it makes from burning anything but what is intended when they are lit.

Tammaro gets 2 XP in one of Creo, Ignem, Craft (Blacksmithing), Philosophiae or Magic Theory. This costs the covenant 3 pawns of vis.

Paulio

Paulio secludes himself with Power Over Power. It is a book for beginners in the art of Vim, of course, but he is a beginner in the art of Vim when he gets started. When the summer rolls around, this is not so any more. The book is relatively short and written quite well, and he has exhausted it of all it has to teach him.

Paulio gets 21 Vim XP.

Aristide

Aristide spends the spring within the library of the nearby cathedral. The Diocese Register goes back several centuries, and it provides a full record of all events that took place there in which the Church was involved - every birth and associated baptism, every funeral, every mass. The city's history is a grand one, and Aristide becomes aware that the church itself was built on the ruins of an ancient Roman temple, and that some of those ruins can be accessed from the crypt, with the Bishop's permission. It might be worth exploring at some point, though with the potent Divine aura, it is likely that there is little of active power down there. It is, however, a pity that the Register is such very dry reading.

Aristide receives 5 Amalfi Lore XP.

Maristela

Maristela spends more time reading than anything else, even dealing with council matters. Her work has kept the Aegis strong, as well. The Ars Bonisagi is a dense and mighty text, several volumes long. She finishes only the first by summer, and has barely penetrated its deeper mysteries. No surprise, given its mighty authorship. The prose is easy to read, but difficult to truly grasp. It will yield much from further study.

Maristela gains 10 Magic Theory XP.

Ambrogio

Ambrogio latches onto someone that requires a mentor. What he does with that, come summer, will be...interesting.

Either choose a PC to mirror or pick a grog and I'll tell you how much XP you get from them and in what.

Lupenas

Lupenas spends the spring delivering mail. All the comes in for the covenant is the standard sort - congratulatory letters, for the most part. He wanders much of the peninsula, heading down into the Kingdom of Sicily for most of his travels. It is exciting work, dodging bandits and making sure the mail gets through. He hears many rumors in his travels and brings them home - tales of a dragon in the north, relayed by Lombard merchants. Stories about a town whose church bells were stolen over the winter, yet to be found. A merchant from Sicily speaking of a strange hawk he saw recently, which snatched a rabbit from within a cage in the blink of an eye, which he claimed was larger and grander than any hawk he'd ever seen. The kind of tales that happen in any merchant travel. A magus in Rome offhandedly mentions the birth of a new litter of royal kittens in the Alps, which are strong hopes for possible familiars.

Lupenas gets 2 XP in Survival, Sicily Lore or Order of Hermes Lore.

Mariel

Mariel takes part in petty thievery and odd jobs, earning herself enough to last for a little while. Her days as a fox leave her stealing a few chickens each month, which some complain about, but she avoids most scrutiny. She overhears some of the wealthier wives at market, discussing politics. Their husbands are aiming to capitalize on the festivities of the fall, when the Holy Roman Emperor is to be crowned. There are some worries, however, that the Pope will refuse to crown him, as he has refused to send any men to the Crusade in Egypt, which is faltering. Apparently, the would-be Emperor is planning to get aorund this by sending gifts to Rome over the summer, and the merchants are gathering money to hire good guards.

Mariel gets 2 XP in Legerdemain or Amalfi Lore.

Fulgencio

Fulgencio leads his men over the spring, serving as a caravan guard for one of the local merchant-lords. He and his men prove themselves in battle, driving off bandits who would have raided the caravan on its trip to Rome. While doing so, he hears rumors of strange men poking about in the old ruins under Rome - the catacombs and tunnels left behind by the ancient Romans. They say there are still Roman dead down there! He also hears tell of bandits and brigands gathering to prey on the increasing number of Sicilian traders and diplomats heading for Rome over the next few months. That will be a good source of business for summer and autumn - either joining them or fighting them.

Fulgencio receives 2 XP to put in Single Weapon, Rome Lore or Leadership.

Bartolomeo

Bartolomeo spends his season preaching and overseeing the care of the souls of the city's faithful. He will need to, at some point, go around doing visitations within the diocese, but for now, he can attend to the city itself. He speaks on the virtue of chastity and calm, overcoming lust by devotion and love of the Christ. He visits with his flock, giving advice to the lords of the city and preaching to them against the lust they feel - for money, for food, for each others' wives. Some listen, while others do not. In particular, the podesta, Francisco di Camarotti, is amenable to your sermons and spends much time speaking with Bartolomeo when he is not busy being, well, a magistrate and city leader. His rival, the merchant-lord Giorgio di Voscanza, is much less amenable and in fact avoids the bishop as much as he can. It seems clear that he feels a deep lust within his heart, but not for what - perhaps he is planning some immoral venture to gain money, or perhaps the bedchamber of a woman not his wife. (It must be admitted that while she is a lovely and pious woman, Laurencia di Voscanza was not blessed with looks, but instead a keen accountant's mind and a fine hand at needlework.)

Bartolomeo earns 2 XP in one of Leadership, Amalfi Lore or Church Lore.

Fiorenza

Fiorenza spends her season engaged in business. All talk recently is, of course, on the upcoming crowning of Emperor Frederick II of Sicily. It has been in negotiations with the Pope for over two years now, and the final gifts to the Papacy are set to arrive over summer. The wise and the greedy alike are investing heavily for the celebrations to come in winter. As yet, the covenant has not made many enemies among the merchants - Fiorenza hears little that might threaten them. There are rumors, of course. Giorgio di Voscanza is engaged in some kind of chicanery involving shipping - it'd take more thorough investigation to determine what. His wife is unhappy with him, as well, and has said as much to Fiorenza. She believes he is unfaithful. The podesta has recently ruled that paper will continue production in the city despite Frederick II's ban of use of Amalfi paper over the more durable parchment, and so a black market on paper sales to Sicily is beginning. Perhaps more worrisome are the rumors of bandits growing more organized in preparation for the winter festivities and summer gifts. They won't lose all that once the emperor is crowned, after all. And there are rumblings in the north - the Lombard League is planning something after the coronation, to reinforce their continued stance of independence from the emperor's direct rule after he is crowned.

Fiorenza gains 2 XP in one of Bargain, Intrigue or Amalfi Lore.

Fionius

Fionius does the odd job around the city, stealing trifles and selling them to pay his rent and care for his siblings. The most notable job is being hired by a minor member of the Camarotti family to steal the necklace of a member of the Voscanza family's wife. It is an easy job, but the odd part is when the agent that hired him also requests that he place it in the bedroom of another Voscanza merchant. Still, the petty politics of minor nobles is nothing he is much concerned over.

Fionius gains 2 XP in Stealth, Legerdemain or Amalfi Lore.

Everyone, please remember to update the totals on your sheets each season!

Summer, 1220

As the days lengthen and get warmer, the traveling merchants arrive in town for summer. The pilgrims continue, some now arriving even from the further reaches - travelers from Bavaria, for example. The itinerant merchants hawk their wares nearby, offering goods from Sicily and the mysterious lands of the Saracens. Rare spices, strange sculptures and some kind of animal one of them is calling a 'camel'. It resembles nothing so much as a fuzzy horse or cow with a long but less hairy tail, a strange hump on its back, a very long neck and what appears to be a permanently annoyed expression and a tendency to spit at people. (Aristide, alone of the covenant, has seen them before, having spent time near Carthage, across the water.)

What are your plans?

Giovanni is boring and remains locked up in his lab, continuing his magic studies.

Ambrogio is much more interested in doing cool stuff, like stalking Fulgrencio and filling his ears with promises of power and glory. Eagerly, Ambrogio tells the young man that the Wizard forsees in him a great destiny. He spins a mad yarn, seasoned with just a bit of magic to make Fulgrencio pliable to his suggestions.

quote:

"You, boy! Yes, you. Tell me, do you know what makes a man great? Hmm? That's easy, of course, but you're too young to realize - greatness itself makes a man great. Greatness like I see in you. Oh yes! You can't fool this old wise-man's eye, mio amico. You have within you the seed, la scintilla, of majesty. Your legend will stretch from sea to shining sea - from the edge of the Mediterranean to the Black, you will be known as a man of greatness! Oh yes!

I have seen that it is so!

For Greatness is a gift from God, not something that can be gained by idle bambinos at play, a fire that burns in the pit of your soul and leads you to bring wonder to the world! You have it, or you do not - and I, Ambrogio, am an old hand at spotting la scintiilla within hot-hearted young men like yourself!

Come, young man - and let us make you Fulgrencio the Magnfico! Conqueror! Ruler! King! Hero!"

Tammaro takes a break from making his first (well, second) masterpiece to continue his studies. He borrows the Conjurer's Art (Creo L9) from the covenant library and spends the season reading. Note to self: haven't added these points yet.

Fiorenza gathers together her intel... the paper ban and burgeoning black market trade is something that she decides to keep tabs on, but sets that aside for now in favor of more lucrative and immediate matters. Matters by the name of Giorgio di Voscanza.

Fiorenza, thrice married and thrice widowed, expresses sympathies to Laurencia outwardly, while inwardly her curiosity is piqued more than her empathy. Knowing whatever secrets Giorgio might be hiding could be lucrative in any number of ways... if he has found some new smuggling method then she would like to know of it for her own use, or alternatively that or his alleged unfaithfulness could be good as blackmail material.

Mors, I'll talk to you in chat about my options and my course of action when we have a chance.

Maristela is like

and invites herself along with Bruna. Rome! It'll be wonderful! Maybe they can see the Pope!

Bartolomeo is concerned with the moral health of both the podesta and his rival. First for the podesta, who he speaks to about this trade in paper, but...

I have an idea but it requires Fionius to have a conversation with Bartolomeo, probably outside of the confessional. Cosmic Afro, are you down to run into a bishop as he's coming out from a social visit in the covenant's area? Broadly speaking he's going to poke his pointy-hatted nose into the situation here, due to the suspicion of Sin on the part of the Voscanza. He is also open for other folks who might need a bounce since neither of these seem like they'd fill the entire season.

Aristide starts the groundwork for getting access to the crypt. No doubt this will require some buttering up of church officials. Since this may take time, he busies himself exploring the grounds itself, taking a lot of measurements and trying to correlate what he's read about with what exists in the world. He cross-references with what books of Roman history are in his library, trying to track down more information from other sources about this possible temple. Though it may be stripped of all its power, it may yet contain valuable information!

And he also tells anyone within distance at length about the time that he first saw a camel in Carthage, and his opinions about camels since then (poor, as one such animal once spat so violently and and so vociferously upon his tunic that the garment was forever ruined with a stain of red herbage so crimson that upon seeing him the other members of the covenant thought that he had been mortally wounded and would surely perish -- in retrospect, quite the opportunity for a prank that he missed, wouldn't you say? perhaps the circumstances could be duplicated, but oh never mind, even so, when it comes to traversing the sands, he'd take a camel, however ill-mannered, over a horse).

Fulgencio begins making business plans for the summer. He is no common brigand. Upon hearing the news, he opts to accept jobs that will keep him close by for the time being, keeping the roads clear. Which brings him into contact with Ambrogio one fine summer day... first of all, it's Fulgencio... but he's listening, old man. Fulgencio is no bambino by now. How might he achieve such greatness as he most certainly deserves?

Paulio will pass on the pilgrimage. Instead, he is facinated by the exotic animals, particularly the camel, that shows up in the market place. In fact, it inspires him to create a spell as he laments he do not have the time to simply make sketches and other paintings of everything he sees. Still, between his free moments, he pass several hours a day and week taking notes, making drawing with charcoal and paper. As the season progress, he goes deeper and deeper in thought and slightly puzzeled as he tries to figure out a, well, puzzle he can't get out of. Still, when upon asked for it, he says he's simply stumbling upon unforseen problems as far his new project but remains convinced that he'll figure it out in due time.

Fionius will totally encounter the Good Bishop and enter a deal after confessional. Spying for HORRIBLE SIN during his jobs seems like an easy enough thing to do, and he get free beds, as well as food. All for a good cause! What's more to ask?

Paulio will research a spell -- AND COMPLETELY FAIL! That's experimentation for you.

Summer, 1220

Giovanni

Giovanni continues his labwork and study of the Aeneid.

Giovanni gains 17 XP to spend on his Rites and 2 XP in one of Virgilian Theory or one of his Schools.

Beatrice

Beatrice settles herself in to prepare a longevity ritual for Bruna. It will be done by the end of summer, about when the pilgrimage returns. (More on that later.) She takes a small sampling of Bruna's blood, and then begins to prepare a talisman of bone, each taken from a specially prepared corpse. It takes weeks the cleanse and purify the corpses, and more to harvest the bones of hand, foot and rib. The blood serves as the heart of the talisman, to charge it after a ritual that will take a full month. It is personalized to Bruna, and will work for no other. When she returns, the talisman's power will slow Bruna's aging significantly.

With a Creo Corpus lab total of 27, producing a Longevity Ritual with a bonus of +6 and, with Bruna's effective age of 24, costs 5 vis. Beatrice receives 2 XP in one of Creo, Corpus or Magic Theory.

Tammaro

Tammaro secludes himself with the Conjurer's Art, studying it well into the summer. It focuses on the creation of objects by use of Creo magic, giving an in-depth treatment on both temporary and permanent creations, or conjurings. The tome is quite informative, and by the end of summer, Tammaro has exhausted it of meaning.

9 Creo XP.

Paulio

Paulio spends several days sketching camels, and manages to get spat on only once in that time. He is quite lucky in this regard.

His experiments on spell creation go less well. He spends the summer in a blind alley of labwork, attempting to take advantage of certain properties in egg yolk that turn out to be the result of a miscalculation early in the season. It is unfortunate.

No spell is made, but Paulio receives 2 XP in Rego, Animal or Magic Theory.

Aristide

Aristide begins speaking to the priests in an attempt to gain access to the crypt. Technically, this does not require the bishop's authority to grant - any priest can grant it - given the bishop's proximity, the priests are wary of doing so without permission. The priests refuse him access unless he can gain Bartolomeo's permission - but should he receive that, he will have full access to the crypt and the ruins beneath it. In the meantime, Aristide spends much time pacing the cathedral and measuring what he can, as well as studying the old church records. The size and shape of the ruins as described in the text would fall within the size of the main cathedral, primarily in the Ionic style. It appears, however, to have been misidentified by early Church scholars. These were not Roman ruins built atop an old basilica - they were Greek. Aristide believes the temple belonged to Hera, but cannot be sure without personal examination. The altars and statues described in the old records are not well-detailed. However, he does manage to identify a smaller alter as a heroon, a shrine venerating a local hero, which would not be surprising to find in a temple to the area's patron.

Aristide's research gives him another 5 Amalfi Lore as he begins to delve into the area's history further, on top of his petition to the bishop.

Ambrogio

Ambrogio stays with Fulgencio, working to convince him to aim for greatness. A plan will be needed.

Ambrogio mirrors Fulgencio's gains.

Lupenas

Lupenas continues his mail deliveries across Italy. He spends a bit more time dodging bandits, and begins to hear tell of work preparing for the crowning of the emperor. Apparently Frederick has acquired a court wizard who will be performing some kind of ritual to honor him when he is crowned, and will unveil something amazing. People seem suspicious of this court wizard, but then, they often are. The Order, of course, thinks it's all showmanship and charlatanry - there's never been a court wizard of any true power. More stories reach Lupenas' ears - a girl in Sardinia who has been accused of poisoning her father's cows with magic, which could be worth reporting to the Order as potentially an apprentice candidate. A dog reported near Venice which can purportedly paralyze people with fear in a single bark. Tales of some kind of strange construction by bees in the area of Pisa. All kinds of rumors, really.

Lupenas gets 2 XP in Survival, Venice Lore or Order of Hermes Lore.

Mariel

Mariel begins investigation of her curse. It was laid, she knows, by a Frenchman, a man by the name of Ander - Ander Okerra. He is a Basque minor nobleman, a knight of some rank in the service of King Louis the VIII, which makes him a difficult man to deal with. He has a reputation for womanizing - again, not much of a surprise. The curse was probably laid by one of the Basque witches...but that's where things become problematic. Few know much of Basque witches, and understanding that magic may be important to breaking the curse. The Order might be interested in studying the witches and their handiwork - convincing a magus to help you in exchange for helping him get the information from the witches could go well. Perhaps one of the covenant's own magi would be interested. In the meantime, Ander Okerra will be a difficult target to go after for this. He has social rank, as a knight and minor noble, and while he is not one of the wealthiest men, he is far moreso than Mariel. This will take care.

Mariel gets 2 XP in either Intrigue or Area Lore: Basque Country.

Fulgencio

Fulgencio works on keeping the roads safe, protecting the local merchants from the growing brigand threat. He spends much time with Ambrogio, and between them, the two can certainly prepare a plan to make Fulgencio famous. The question is, how?

Fulgencio receives another 2 XP to put in Single Weapon, Great Weapon or Leadership.

Bartolomeo

Bartolomeo writes a series of letters and speaks with his friend, the podesta, to discuss the rumors around Voscanza. All entirely above board, of course. Francisco di Camarotti is happy to talk politics, though much of it is business. He and Voscanza are, by nature, enemies - their families each want power within the city - and so they watch each other closely. He believes that Voscanza is attempting to bolster his fleet's defenses in preparation for the fall and winter, to take advantage of the coming growth in Sicily. He explains that, of course, he would never accuse his good friend Giorgio of unseemly greed, not as a man of business, but he suspects that this focus on shipping by water may be tied in to the rise of bandits along the land routes. He intends to hire some warriors to go out and try to keep the bandits away from the city, but he can hardly raise an army for this, especially during a Crusade. He would not wish to say anything without proof, of course, but he implies that Voscanza has contacts among hte bandits. He cannot speak to more personal lusts, save to say that he does not believe Voscanza and his wife are the best of friends - but then, they were a political marriage, weren't they?

Bartolomeo gains 4 XP in Intrigue or Amalfi Lore, as I'm gonna call this on-the-job training.

Fiorenza

Fiorenza begins making quiet inquiries. A few bribed servants, a hired agent to collate the information, some children paid to watch alleyways...it is the cost of business. What she finds is...interesting. Firstly, Voscanza's wife has been meeting with a younger man, one of the handsome sons of the podesta. While not caught in the act, as it were, it seems that Giorgio would not be the only one being unfaithful. The boy, Antonio, seems actually quite taken with Laurencia, rather than using her, according to Fiorenza's agents. Interesting, but blackmail more than business use. Giorgio, for his part, meets...oh, many people. Women and men. Some, the agents surmise, are agents themselves. They risk being caught several times. Of the women, only a few have the rank needed to properly be mistresses. Of those, the most likely candidate would be Lucrezia di Dandolo, who sings in recitals sometimes and is daughter to a minor noble who holds lands in the north. She lives in the city with her mother, who was sent for her health. There seems little political benefit to speaking with her, anyway, and she is quite attractive. More worrying, however, are the number of rougher types who seem to be in the employ of Giorgio. They could well be guards or thugs, but they spend quite a lot of time away from Amalfi, reporting in only every few weeks. Odd, that.

Fiorenza gains 4 XP in Intrigue.

Fionius

Fionius meets with the Bishop in confession. When he exits, he has a new task. He sets about integrating himself into the lives of the Voscanzas' servants, befriending the stable boys and maids. He is called on to help when they are shorthanded, and in doing so, he is pulled into some of the Voscanza intrigues. Giorgio, head of the family, has recruited some of the stable boys to keep a fast horse at the ready at all times, and to serve as messengers. Naturally, they cannot read, but they have delivered notes to the household of the Dandolos, a minor noble family, handing their messages over to the maids. There are only two women in the Dandolo home - an old woman and her pretty young daughter. The daughter is at all the Voscanza parties, and it seems clear enough that Giorgio's interest must lie with her. In the meantime, however, Fionius also stumbles onto a meeting between Laurencai di Voscanza, Giorgio's wife, with one of the sons of Francisco di Camarotti - a boy named Antonio. Nothing unseemly going on, but the two families are usually at each other's throats. Fionius also sees many papers and notes that he could easily pocket, but as he cannot read, he is unsure which are valuable.

This counts as lifestyle, as Bartolomeo is paying Fionius well for his work. 2 XP in Intrigue, Amalfi Lore or Awareness.

The Pilgrimage

Meanwhile, Bruna and Maristela plan a pilgrimage to Rome in the name of humility. With a magus going along with the turb's captain, several of the more pious grogs volunteer as well, along with a small guard to protect Maristela. Preparations are swiftly made and prayers said, and the party sets out a few weeks into summer, on a bright and cheery day. The road to Rome and back will take most of the season, with several detours to visit local holy sites on the way, and time for prayer and meditation on the virtue of Humility.

The first week of the journey is uneventful. The party travels from Amalfi towards Naples, to witness the Blood of Saint Januarius, who was martyred in the Year of Our Lord 304, when he visited jailed Christians and was thrown to the lions, who would not attack him, for he was so holy. By his intercession was the eruption of Mount Vesuvius calmed in 472, protecting Naples from destruction like pagan Pompeii. His blood is said to liquify in times of danger, protecting the city with his miraculous power, and visiting his tomb will surely be a beautiful experience.

However, on the way to Naples, one of the horses throws a shoe, forcing the party to stop in a small roadside inn. The innkeeper is a large, balding man who welcomes you all in to the crowded common room of the inn. "Welcome, welcome!" He bobs his head nervously, looking at Maristela and then quickly looking away. Many of the other patrons of the inn turn to watch as the group enters. "I am Rudolfo, and welcome to my inn. What brings you to our doors?"

I expect everyone to grab and, if necessary, name and describe a grog for this adventure, if they aren't Bruna or Maristela. (Or another magus/companion who joins the pilgrimage.)

Oh well. They had to stop somewhere.

Athanasios is not tremendously excited to go on a pilgrimage as a guard. Religion is burdensome. All he can think about is getting the ladies to Rome and in church safely so that he can have some time off and some extra coin to burn in the more exciting streets of the larger city, then getting back to Amalfi and getting the rest of his payment. So the horse losing a shoe is a genuine impediment! He stands by while Bruna talks, simply waiting to see what'll happen for the moment.

The innkeeper stares at Bruna, then Maristela for a moment, then nods. "Come in, come in." The rest of the crowd mostly turns away, though a few keep watching, out of curiosity or boredom. "For a few coins I can have your horses tended to, but it'll need to be overnight - you can see, we're busy. Lots of travelers this season!" He gestures at the crowds. "My wife's busy cooking and my sons have been handling the stables while I manage in here. They'll see to your horses. My oldest's the only one who can do shoeing without help from me or my wife, y'see, so it's a bit backed up."

He whistles, and a 12-year-old boy scampers down a flight of stairs. "Aye, pa?"

"Go see to their horses, Romeo. Mark the stalls for shoeing."

The boy heads off to get your horses, and the innkeeper nods. "Now, that'll be one copper coin for each horse that needs care and feeding. But with that, I throw in your meals and board here. Just, ah, one problem." He shrugs. "We're busy, as you see."

One group of people gathered around a table cheer raucously at the throw of a set of dice.

Athanasios grumbles in Greek, but offers no serious complaints, as he has also slept in way worse places.

I only take special jobs, if you know what I mean.
Bruna

Bruna bows her head slightly and says "Thank you for offering such a large group respite." She then raises her head and talks to all those around, "If you do not mind, are there any who wish to join me in a prayer to the Lord for safety and sanctity in rest?"

Bruna did feel partly guilty that she was not seeking this prayer due to selfless faith, but because she knew a place such as this may not protect her from the demons she knows will be lurking in the night.

Maristela opines: "If it was good enough for our Saviour, it's good enough for me." Then she smiles again.

Then she says, "Oh, a prayer! I know a good one." To the inn keeper, "I don't suppose you've news here. Do things fare well in Rome?"

Joshua gives a stiff salute from his spot outside, demonstrating his agreement to the thing. Whatever the wizards wants, really. Or the people representing the wizards, which is just as bad, then return to his vigil. He will follow along the lad to take care of the horses.

The innkeeper shrugs at the request for prayer. "Don't see why not. You did say you're pilgrims."

The inn falls quiet for the prayer - even the less pious are not about to make a huge show of disrupting a prayer, after all. The crowded inn does not make for the easiest rest stop, but it could be far worse. It could be the night.

The stables are dry, and that is the only real mercy. They are noisy and stink of horse, they are dark, they are cramped. The straw is uncomfortable and there is little to recommend them. However, by morning, the horses are re-shoed and travel is ready once more. The night is not especially restful, but neither are you attacked by vermin or demonic forces. So, not as bad as feared! The accommodations are humble, perhaps, but the food is decent and provided enough to take care of any of your hunger before you set out. Perhaps God will look kindly upon your decision to humbly accept your meager lodgings.

The trip down the road continues a time. The sun rises high in the sky, and the coaching inn has been left far behind you. As you enter a small wooded copse, however, you turn a corner in the road and find a log across it. Sitting on the log are three large men, with three more standing before it. The largest steps forward, grinning broadly. All have large axes in hand, and they are of a very rough demeanor.

"Well then! Travelers, are you? Surrender your wealth and we may spare your lives! Resist, and we will take both!"

Athanasios doesn't make trouble. He's used to sleeping in horrible accommodations. A stable will do just fine. But he's eager to leave the next morning. When they come across the log in the middle of the road, he reaches for his own axe. He can spot an ambush when he sees one - and he steps forward to perform his duties as caravan guard, hurling invective - unless someone stops him first.
