Hell, feel free to try out every weapon you come upon. There are some gloriously wacky ones in this game and SotFS in particular made of the most amazing ones much more accessible.
e: Oh, and should you go the Faith route, remember - lightning spears are poo poo.

This is actually extremely viable and pretty much the only way I managed to do damage to anything in the DLC. Some utterly idiotic decisions there but we'll get to that.

To be fair the game does warn you off that one pretty strongly.
