Before the Zero Suit Samus was like Ripley but buffer and with different hair. In Prime she almost looked middle aged. Now she's just a typical anime girl. It doesn't help that Fusion gave her Daddy issues and Other M gave her less determination than Peach.

I think Other M could and should be ignored for better titles. Samus, like any fictional character, is subject to interpretation; much like how Frank Miller and Grant Morrison write different versions of Batmen, who are both "canon" and yet incompatible with each other. What I'm trying to say is, Other M's Samus is some chick pretending to be Samus while the real Samus is off saving some tribe of psychic jellyfish from being eaten by a giant space shark with ten eyes and half of a battle cruiser stuck in its side.

I think they're afraid to admit that Metroid was better written by westerners and that's why Retro is relegated to making new dkc games and they allowed Sakamoto to write a new story heavy game.

If I recall correctly, while the did okay in he west, the Prime games didn't do well in Japan because of their aversion to FPSs so who know what Nintendo thinks they can do with the franchise these days. Like you'd think they'd do what they've been tending to do these days and just go back to the original formula but I think Metroid doesn't scan as particularly family friendly or like something they can easily make multiplayer unlike most of their main franchises so they're probably reluctant to put a ton of resources into it. Them thinking a single player dark scifi thing doesn't have wide enough appeal also explains the current direction they're taking it.

Yeah, I know and it's also ultra cutesy with basically Miis as characters. As I said, I think the things that are making them reluctant are that it's a dark niche single player game when lately they've been focusing on bright, wide appealing at least optionally multiplayer games so they're just trying to turn Metroid into that.

Probably trying to get as many sales as they can. Multiplayer does sell, and it's not a bad niche for Nintendo to try and corner, it's one of the few things they still do better than everyone else. A local multiplayer experience is a big deal, and with most of the gamers who would want a gripping and immersive single player experience still have poo poo like Dark Souls on other consoles.
