I'm just starting my day and on the ol' iPod comes on 'Lookin Down the Barrel of a Gun' from Paul's Boutique by the Beastie Boys. I thought about when I first heard the B boys back when Fight for your Right to Party was hot stuff. I didn't really care for that song so much but I got the Licensed to Ill and Open up and Say Ahh by Poison tapes for like my 12th birthday from my Godmother, who I pretty sure only listened to Gene Autry. I immediately cracked open Licensed to Ill and listened to the opening of Rhymin and Stealin about 30 times before the rest of the song. (I don't think I was familiar with 'When the Levee Breaks' at this point). Over the next several years I played the poo poo out of that tape. I ended up buying the tape at least once more and the cd probably 2 or 3 times. I don't think I even listened to the Poison tape all the way through one time. What are your Beastie Boys memories?

Can agree that Paul's Boutique is an A+ album I actually only got the entire thing last year and had only known Shake Your Rump off it before that, dunno how I ever got by without the rest of it e: Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun is really good, yes; so are High Plains Drifter, Shadrach, and Hey Ladies

I think my first real exposure to them though was when at Kmart with my mom when I was around 11 or 12 and I asked her to buy me the 2-disc "Anthology" and she did...I think prior to that I'd just heard "Fight for your right" on the radio or something..

Me and all my highbrow musician friends wrote off Licensed To Ill as dumb frat party background noise. I wasn't even aware when Paul's Boutique was released as the B-Boys were not even on my radar. I was managing a record store when we got an advance copy of Check Your Head and I simply could not believe that the amazing music I was hearing was the same stupid group that I remember yelling Jewishly over butt rock. After going back to check out PB I could certainly appreciate what they were doing, but it was mostly samples. They not only played actual instruments on CYH, but played their asses off, which I had no idea they were capable of. It was like if One Direction revealed they had incredible chops and dropped a sick jazz fusion album on us out of nowhere.
