Revenge for Abdeslam's arrest?

It was only a matter of time before terrorists realised that the queues to get onto a plane were just as good a target as the planes themselves. Looking forward to Republican presidential candidates who can't locate Belgium on a map offering their deep condolences to the people of Brussels alongside their new plans for daily CAT scans of all Muslims.

This is going to get very ugly very quickly. Friends based in Belgium who have always been very tolerant and progressive are starting to talk about the 'enemy in our midst'. I don't like where this is going.

Looks like the airport one at least was a suicide bomber, so different from the French attacks. It seems pretty likely that they're related, still. Edit: Nope, there were a few suicide bombers there too Lemming fucked around with this message at 09:57 on Mar 22, 2016 |

The Maalbeek metro explosion is right in the middle of the administrative district in Brussels. The street you in the picture is Wetstraat/Rue de la Loi, which is basically synonymous with the government and is a stones throw from the main EU Institutes.

What exactly is it about Belgium thats put such a bee in the jihadi dudes bonnet? I mean, its belgium, they dont really get up in peoples faces, unless its to give them some tasty beer some cool old monks made. Well thats about the limit of my belgium knowledge, so why does belgium seem to be so prominent in terms of countries islamists dont like very much?

Reminder that Belgium has the highest radicalization rate in the world. 800 Muslims from Belgium go to fight for ISIS out of every 1 million in the country. Several times higher than what you see in the Middle East. Just in case anyone thinks it's a smart idea to get their racism on towards refugees after this. The flow of jihadist ideology comes out of Belgium, not towards it.

Toplowtech posted:That's my guess too, operatives seeing their direct leadership getting arrested and the police getting close starting the mission sooner than expected. Was the airport a convenient target or were there something public and important going to happen in Belgium soon. Nothing that I can think of. Salah Abdeslam was arrested recently so maybe they decided to act sooner rather than later. Airports are pretty crowded and I read that they blew up the American Airlines desk specifically, but can't confirm that.

Brussels is also the administrative centre of the EU, so if Europe is your hated heart of western decadence then it's a good symbolic place to strike, I guess.

The tour of Flanders is next weekend, which brings out a million cycling fans. There's always plenty of mass events to target, but those two would be pretty symbolic to strike at the average Belgian's level of safety. Local radio is reporting 13 dead, 35 wounded in zaventem airport.

Doesn't help that we're happy letting Muslims have their own, semi-detached culture in some cities. Result is little dialog and lots of racism from both sides. You can compare it with Fox-watching Republicans and Democrats. Living in the same world, but very detached. Radio reporting definitely 1 suicide bomber at the airport.
