A local cat rescue posted on Facebook that they had two 15-year-old male cats surrendered from a neglectful home, one boy orange and the other white. I commented that I wanted them (senior cats chillest cats), so they got them both to the vet for checkups. Turns out, the orange one was in such bad shape he had to be put down after a couple days living with a shelter employee, given the best couple days he probably ever had. I picked up the old white man, who the shelter called Grandpa so I named Pawpaw.

When I got him, he was stiff and sore and barely leaving his box. After a week of loving and pettes and good food, he's now chirping, jumping up on couches to cuddle, and soaking up sunbeams in windowsills.

Old man cats are the best, I'll need to post pics of mine again soon

The other day, I posted here about the passing of my cat, Dead Kitty.

We took her body to the local Cat Doctor today, because they do little cremations. The vet there took the box we brought her in, walked to the back, but soon came racing back out as I settled the fee.

The vet does brief checks on each kittycorpse before processing. This cat had been in there since Saturday, hadn't moved or made a peep, but she detected a faint heartbeat.

By some grace of something, a liter of fluid later, some steroids and antibiotics, and a nebulizer treatment, she's now asleep in the doorway to my bedroom.

Her name is now Lazarus.

Busket Posket posted:

Some sort of monstrous sinus/respiratory infection that left her unable to smell or eat, and produced massive amounts of mucus that clogged her throat. The vet said she pulled massive strings of snot out Lazarus' nose and mouth, and it likely gummed up her digestive tract which is why she wasn't voiding. As Dr. Coker said, "millions of years of evolution and they can die from a chest cold."

I was 100% sure I heard the death rattle, but she had been somehow breathing so shallowly her chest didn't perceptively move. Or she stopped breathing for a few hours and started again? There doesn't seem to be any cognitive damage, though she's still in rough physical shape. Her eyes are clear now though, and she's trying to meow but creaking and wheezing instead.

Tomorrow I have to blend up some wet food with warm water and syringe it into her mouth to get her strength back up. I'm just so glad to have my cuddlefloofmonster back :3:

Man part of me would love to own a snake someday, but it would have to be one of the ones you can just feed bugs to, cause I would not be able to handle those frozen mice you feed the larger kinds, have a mild phobia of dead animals that aren't fish or have already been processed into food

I love skunks but they're illegal to keep as pets where I live, and with good reason. It's pretty much never good to try to keep wild animals as pets, even if they theoretically "make good pets," because then you have horrible trafficking and trapping and breaking up skunk families. :qq:

I'd say that depends on the species more than anything, at least assuming the animal is native to the area(or if non native, then common in it's home region enough that the pet trade is unlikely to do much harm, or even captive bred), and not larger than your average dog

Especially since depending on how you define "Wild" vs "Domesticated" you'd be including tons of animals people keep as pets with no issues whatsoever(including most non mammal pets)

Yeah we haven't even bothered to try and actually domesticate spiders, snakes, and most reptiles that are kept as pets. About the only exception to that is silkworms, and those are less pets and more production insects. If people really wanted to, a large enough controlled breeding program can turn just about any wild mammal into an obedient cuddly pet, as a Russian scientist proved back in the late 50's by domesticating silver foxes, although that program isn't quite finished yet (but they've made remarkable progress in a mere 60 years as opposed to the hundreds or even thousands it took early man to turn wolves into dogs).

Heck some don't even need it as their demeanor are already pretty human compatible, like with Hedgehogs

My sister is getting a German Shepherd puppy next month. Before you ask, she tried to adopt--but no adoption agencies would let her have a dog because she doesn't have a fenced-in yard and the adoption agency reps were assholes. So, she got in touch with a local Shepherd breeder who raises and shows them. They had one female puppy left in the last litter, and the pups will be ready to leave their mother first week in October.

Every week she gets a "pupdate" from the breeder with pictures. This was last week's:

When she sent it to me, I made this face for about 10 straight minutes: :haw:

My memory is hazy but I recall saying things like "LOOK AT ITS FLURF" and "I WANT TO SCROOF ITS FLOOF". She lives a half mile from my house. Needless to say, I will spend very little time at my own house in October.

Axolotls are loving astounding from a scientific point of view. The weirdest thing about them is that they are the closest thing to irl Pokemon with regards to their metamorphosis. They are a neotenic amphibian meaning that they don't normally undergo metamorphosis in the wild. Sexually mature individuals don't ever fully transform into obligate air breathers. They maintain their external gills throughout their normal lifespans.

But here's the crazy part: you can induce metamorphosis of an axolotl into a relatively normal adult salamander by exposing it to a highly iodine rich environment. Even more incredible, normally axolotls can regenerate most body parts and organs (including brain) when they are in their iodine deprived state. But when you "evolve" them by introducing iodine, they lose this ability. Thus their regeneration ability has something to do with their psuedojuvenile state.

Axolotls loving rule.

E: here's what a post metamorphosis axolotl looks like

Also I just noticed there's actually an axolotl Pokemon and it's evolution is perfect:

Of course it's worth mentioning that a Axolotl that goes through that change also has a vastly reduced lifespan compared to normal ones(at least from what I remember from last time I looked it up), so you should avoid doing it to yours unless you are doing valid research of that nature

Also worth mentioning while we're talking about Axolotls are the other two major types of Salamander that express neoteny; the Olm, and the Mudpuppies

On this talk of strong dogs I'm reminded of the Labrador Retriever my cousin had when we were kids, thing was ridiculously strong, like once he was leashed to a table at a restaurant and something caught his interest so he ran after it and tore the table right off it's restraints on the ground, he also dragged me across the street multiple times while walking him, leading to some very interesting injuries...

I'm going to need some real heavy duty cuteness for the next couple of days, as the odds are really high that my cat is dead, as he's ~20 years old, in really poor physical condition(has a kidney condition of some sort that was probably going to be the death of him within the next month or two anyways), and disappeared somewhere outside of our house/yard during a brief lull in what has been a pretty intense series of storms around(right now it's pouring like crazy)

I'll admit at this point I'm a complete wreck emotionally, I've had him since I was 8(I'm 26) and while I had been prepared for his end to arrive for at least a couple months now, I didn't think it would be like this, in such a horrid way

I've lost a friend, a brother, a piece of my very soul today and it hurts, hurts in a way I'm not sure I can handle, the world has become a lot less bright for me
